Volunteer in South Africa: Most Affordable & Real Impact!

Why did you decide to volunteer abroad with UBELONG in South Africa?

Susan: For several years, I dreamed of traveling overseas to volunteer and help others. It always appeared out of reach because of my full time work schedule. I thought I would have to commit to serving at least six months or a year. However, an online search of organizations offering cross cultural experiences revealed otherwise. I learned I could volunteer two weeks or as long as I wanted. I became determined to make my dream come true. Every now and then I would research volunteer organizations only to become discouraged by the high program costs. I believed a volunteer should not have to pay exorbitant costs to give of their time and talents to serve others.

So, I decided to forego my dream for the time being. Within the last year my dream began to resurface in my heart and I decided to search once again. I found UBELONG almost immediately, reviewed their website thoroughly and knew this organization was the right choice for me. They offered programs at reasonable costs in various countries. I was inspired by the testimonies of previous UBELONGers. Visiting Africa was on my bucket list so I chose a two week educational assignment in South Africa.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Susan: Upon arrival in Cape Town (Sunday night), my friend and I were greeted by members of the local staff. We were taken to the volunteer house where many other volunteers from other countries were staying during the course of their assignments. All of the new volunteers participated in an orientation session the next day where details, guidelines, etc. were shared. We also took a walking tour of the city center area. At the end of the day, I was taken to my host family close to where my assignment was located. I served two weeks at an elementary school working with third graders to improve their reading and language skills.

I walked to school each day and greeted the students and staff at the school upon arrival. Each day, I assisted the teacher with the lesson plan outlined for the day with focus on assisting those students needing the most help. I also assisted with administrative duties as requested by the instructor. Most importantly, I showed up daily with an open mind and flexible to serve in whatever capacity needed. At the end of my assignment, I met with the teaching staff and principal to provide feedback on my experience and observations. The group was receptive to my ideas and implemented my recommendations.

What made this volunteer abroad experience unique and special?

Susan: Every volunteer experience is unique and special to me. I learned that we (humans) all face similar challenges and have the same basic needs and desires. What makes us different is our culture (food, language, geography, religion, etc.). It was great experiencing Cape Town; it is a special and beautiful place rich in history and culture. The more one learns about diverse cultures the more tolerant and understanding we become. Children are the future leaders and must be afforded opportunities and the best education possible no matter where they live. I was fortunate and honored to serve the children of South Africa. They are smart, intelligent and energetic! They are children of excellence!

What was the hardest or most challenging part of your experience?

Susan: There was nothing hard or challenging about my experience. The anticipation of what to expect was a little nerving prior to arriving to my assignment. However, UBELONG provided great information and conducted an online training session.

There is still a level of anticipation especially when volunteering in a different country from which you are accustomed. However, once there everyone was very nice and helpful. I was happy to have a host family instead of staying in the overcrowded guest house. I only wish I afforded more time to stay in South Africa to experience more of its beauty.

Ten years from now, what’s the one thing you think you’ll remember from the trip?

Susan: I will always remember the students and the passionate staff who serves them. It was remarkable to witness the principal and her assistant express unconditional love and care for the students. It was inspiring to hear their vision for the future. On my last volunteer day, the children made lovely cards, gave candy and performed to express their gratitude. What a treat!
