About Program

Gateway Rehabilitation Centre is a center/home for children/adolescents with disabilities, founded in 2021. Children and adolescents are accepted who would otherwise have no or only limited opportunities for education. At the center, they are provided with food, shelter, access to health services, school attendance, and skills training. The goal is to give them the chance for the best possible future. It is important to us that the children are integrated into the normal schools or schools for children with special needs and that the school does not take place in the center itself. We want to get the children included and not separated from the community. Therefore, they can also go home during the holidays and spend time with their families if they wish. In addition, the families of those affected are to be educated and informed to the extent that they in turn can sensitize and advise families of children with disabilities.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Such a nice experience!

My time as a volunteer in Tanzania was unforgettable. The organization is well structured and is committed to the local community with heart and soul. From day one I felt welcome and well guided. The projects are meaningful and impactful!

There was a great commitment from the team and a warm collaboration with the local population. It was not only an opportunity to help, but also to experience the Tanzanian culture in an authentic way. I learned a lot about myself, but also about Tanzania. An inspiring experience that enriched both the community and myself!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I fell in love with a new food combination. Namely ‘chapati with liver stew.’ I really have to go back to eat it again, because I can not make it the same at home like in Tanzania! ;)
Pros
  • Beautiful people and nature
  • New friendships
  • Experiencing a second home

Once in a lifetime

My experience in Tanzania was truly one of the best decisions of my life! From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in a new culture, surrounded by warm and welcoming people, and exposed to incredible experiences that enriched my worldview in ways I never expected. Living and helping in a different country challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, adapt to new situations, and develop a deeper sense of independence.

During my time in Tanzania, I learned a new language, built lifelong friendships, and gained invaluable intercultural skills that will benefit me both personally and professionally. A foreign experience like this opens doors to new opportunities, expands your perspective, and helps you grow in ways that staying at home never could. It pushes you to see the world differently and appreciate the beauty of diversity.

I highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a experience abroad. It’s more than just helping in a different country—it’s a journey of self-discovery, growth, and adventure. Take the leap; it will change your life!

What was your funniest moment?
When we had a powercut during the evening. Everyone had a might on and was cutting vegetables in the dark. We put some music on and had a blast!
Pros
  • Personal growth
  • New perspectives
  • Friends for life
Cons
  • Missing home a bit

A happy volunteer

I had a wonderful stay at the center with the children. It’s a nice place where the kids are living together but where I also had the chance to relax after a busy volunteering day. It’s enriching to see the children with a disability living and growing together but in their own way. They all have different disabilities but they are helping each other always. I also had the chance to experience the Tanzanian culture, going on a safari and seeing nice places. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If i could change one thing, i would stay longer. Because there is so much more to experience in the house and Tanzania!
Pros
  • Happy children
  • New culture
  • Adventurous
