About Program

Depending on your skills and qualities we will connect to one of our orphanage or school placements in Arusha, Tanzania. You will have a life-changing experience interacting with the children, teaching them valuable life lessons all the while having loads of fun with them! A lot of the children in our programs are orphans or come from a dangerous home situation and sometimes all they need is a loving and caring someone willing to spend time with them.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

A Wakawaka Experience

Spending two months in Tanzania with Wakawaka Volunteers was a life-changing journey. On a daily basis I was teaching in a daycare located in Arusha, which provided me with the opportunity to get to know the local people and their culture. Being able to brighten up the days of the children (2-5 year old) and to provide them with little knowledge was a very satisfying experience. Although many Tanzanians understand English, the free Swahili-course Wakawaka offers is a real must (especially when working with kids)! Besides, it made me feel more independent and secure in my day to day activities. I used the weekends to do a lot of touristic trips that were offered by the organisation.

What I found frustrating time to time, was the level of corruption which made it hard to start up a sustainable project. However, this is a general problem within Africa. Because Wakawaka Volunteers is a small organisation, there is a lot of attention for your individual wishes and needs, and you are assured that any project you undertake is assisted and guided professionally.

Thanks to Wakawaka Volunteers I had the opportunity to make the most of this experience. Asante sana!

What would you improve about this program?
I would have liked to have more social activities where I could easily meet other volunteers/people.
