Costs vary depending on program. Students traveling from the United States will travel on our escorted group flight from the United States, international participants can choose to take our group flight from the USA or arrange their own airfare.

Participants traveling to Tanzania on a US passport will need $100 to obtain a visa upon arrival in Tanzania.

About Program

Since 2006, Rustic has introduced students to the people and cultures of Tanzania. Between safari trips and Mt. Kilimanjaro climbs, students are exposed to indigenous tribal groups, such as the Maasai of the Great Rift Valley and the nomadic Hadzabe, who still maintain traditional lifestyles. Students also work alongside villagers on collaboratively designed service projects, enabling them to integrate with the community and develop a local perspective.

What you will remember most from your time in Tanzania is the people. Tanzanians welcome you with big smiles and are genuinely excited to share their culture and customs. Be ready to become part of the community while you sip tea and listen to stories from your host families, community members, and other locals.

African Wildlife Conservation

Join the efforts of young environmentalists and aspiring biologists all over the world as part of Rustic’s Critical Issues environmental conservation program. Travel around Tanzania to aid in habitat restoration efforts, while you work alongside community members on projects that support development and conservation. Climbing Kili

Our daughter had a blast in Tanzania! She just returned home late last night, and has lots of adventures to share with our family. She has a sincere appreciation of the little things, like electricity, hot and cold running water and a toilet in our house. What an experience for 17 days...with bucket showers, squatty potties and all the new and exciting foods she tried and enjoyed.

Our children have travelled to Thailand, Costa Rica, Tanzania, and off to the Dominican Republic in August, all with Rustic Pathways. We love Rustic Pathways, from our Travel Consultant, Carrina C. to all the exciting adventures that they will remember and enjoy for an entire lifetime.

We would recommend Rustic Pathways for all of your future trips, you will be so happy you chose this organization for your students.

What would you improve about this program?

The air travel can sometimes be long for a young student. However, I understand why they need these safety cushions of hours /layovers because so many students are coming in from all over the world. On our daughters program to Tanzania, there were 16 total students coming in from every where around the world to go meet up at the JFK Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands and ten off to Tanzania. They were arriving from California, Colorado, Texas, Turkey, Dubai, and Switzerland. They will have lots of time to get to know one another in the airport, waiting for their departures.

This was my second year with Rustic, but my first in Africa. Just like last year, I had an amazing, life-changing experience. One of my favorite parts of Rustic is that the leaders don't treat you like little children. They talk to you about anything from serious matters to book and movies and honestly feel like friends. The service is incredibly rewarding (you usually do about half a day on Faces and 6 hours on Culture) and the villagers are amazingly friendly. It's an awesome program.

What would you improve about this program?

On Culture I wish we had had a bit more free time.

I've volunteered in Tanzania twice with Rustic Pathways, and both times were incredible experiences. Rustic Pathways provides the perfect mix of hard work and a fun time. Half the day is spent working on service projects that are clearly sustainable and beneficial to the community we worked with, such as building and renovating classrooms at the local school. The other half is spent going into Arusha, participating in cultural exchanges with the villagers, or exploring the village (there's a beautiful waterfall at the heart of Njoro Village and sometimes you can even see monkeys!). Additionally, Rustic Pathways staff members and program leaders are some of the friendliest and most professional I've come across. I highly recommend Rustic Pathways for a fun and memorable experience that also allows you to make a difference in the global community.

It is difficult to describe my experience in Tanzania in words. It was a wonderful, life changing trip. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of my greatest accomplishments and I am grateful that the Rustic Pathways staff and other students were able to help me summit the mountain and reach my goal.The trip enabled me to challenge myself intellectually and physically. The staff members engaged the students and encouraged them to participate in activities even if they were not scheduled activities. For example, one of my trip leaders on the Culture in the Crater trip led runs through the villages almost everyday after we finished our tasks at the school. The runs were especially memorable because I saw a different part of the village than when I visited the school. I believe that the flexibility and openness of the trip leaders helped completely emerge the students in the culture.

What would you improve about this program?

I woud make the individual trips longer. It takes a day or two to settle into a situation. I felt that one week was not enough time to experience everything that I wanted to experience on a given trip.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose The Maji Safi Project because the water crisis is a growing problem in the world today. I wanted to go to Tanzania to help and learn more about it. Also, it is a Critical Issues program so it is based around the service work and the water crisis. Also, I wanted a trip that was more focused on service.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Rustic Pathways assisted me with the packing list and flying to Tanzania. The packing list that they gave us was super helpful and had everything I needed for the trip. They had flight leaders that I met with in the airport, and they flew with us. I only had to organize a ride to the airport and apply for a visa, but if I needed any help with my visa, Rustic would always offer help.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Don't be nervous. I was really nervous going into this trip like I am with all my Rustic trips, but this one was totally different. The people who come on this trip are the most amazing people you will ever meet. The same goes for the leaders. The leaders will also help you if you’re having any trouble adjusting to being in a new country.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

A day when we were doing service would usually start with an 8 AM breakfast before being driven over to Maji Safi where we would check in to see what work we needed to do. Then we would drive over to the service area if needed. Then, we come back to Maji Safi for lunch. In the afternoon, we would play games with school children. After that, we would have dinner and then all hang out before bed.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was meeting new people. However, as soon as I started to meet my group, that fear went away immediately. My group was really genuine and down to earth. We became really close in the first few days of the trip, and I was able to get really comfortable around them. Also, we all got along really well together.

How do I know if this is the right program for me?

This program is for people who really love service and who really want to make a change in the world. It's also for people who love the environment and want to learn more about the water crisis. If this sounds like you, I encourage you to go on this trip. It will be so amazing!
