About

One theme each of our United States programs shares is the idea of home. Some students work with refugee children who are assimilating into a new home, some help the residents of New Orleans rebuild their homes, and some learn to feel at home amid the vast natural beauty of our national parks. International students gain new perspectives about the United States, and American students often feel as though they are really getting to know their home country for the first time.

Even if the United States is your home country, you are bound to encounter something unexpected on one of these programs. The United States is diverse in every sense, boasting a wide range of sights, activities, people, food, and cultures. You’ll be surprised by the issues you are exposed to and amazed at how much you will discover.

Rustic Pathways Review

I went to New Orleans with Rustic Pathways and had the best summer of my life. I met great people, explored the unique city, and helped out the community. The leaders were amazing. They changed my life because of the lessons they taught us. They were so welcoming and made everyone feel important. As we worked in the houses we also got to hear the inspiring stories of how the hurricane affected their lives before and after. Rustic Pathways is a great program and everyone should get the chance to get the life changing experience i got.

What would you improve about this program?
This program was great but if i had to change one thing it would be to explore the city a little more but we still got to explore the city plenty.

The point of view of a both Swiss and Italian student

My name's Marco and I'm 16 years old. I come from Toscany, in Italy, but I actually live in Switzerland. I went in Arizona and in New Orleans. I'd recommend both of them to everyone. Helping others makes you feeling so good. The joy of seeing the smile of a man who just got a new house after Katrina in New Orleans or the one of a man that you just served in a soup kitchen in Flagstaff (AZ) is beyond words.
Thank you Rustic for the opportunity, see you next Summer in Thailand !

Rustic Experience?

When i signed up for RP i expected lots of experiential learning and cool new friends. I enjoyed this program but definitely felt like all the kids were just going for college essays, which is really stupid!:/

3 stars

This was an okay program, but I don't think that I would want to go again. It was extremely costly and I felt that a lot of the other people there just went because their parents could (easily) afford it and they needed something interesting to put on their college applications.

Good Works & the Grand Canyon Summer 2014

I chose this program because of the combined community service and adventure travel aspect of it, and I'm so glad I did. We did about 20 hours of service on this trip with the goal to help provide food to low income families, and I really feel like Rustic Pathways helped me make a difference. We packed boxes of food, bagged bulk goods, and prepared food in the kitchen, but the most meaningful thing to me was handing the boxes we had packed to people and seeing the impact it made for their families. As for the adventure travel part of the trip, I had a blast. We did all kinds of things outdoors, but the highlight for me was seeing the Grand Canyon. It is absolutely incredible and something that everyone should see in person at least once in their life. If you're not sure about going on a trip like this, take these last words of advice: I went into this trip not knowing anyone, and I came out of it with close friends and experiences both fun and meaningful that I will remember forever.

What would you improve about this program?
On the packing list, we were told to bring a sleeping bag and hiking boots so I brought both, but we didn't end up needing those. The only thing to improve would be making the packing list absolutely clear.

Rebuilding New Orleans

This trip has been the most valuable and impactful experience in my life. Helping to rebuild houses for these people and meeting them is amazing. You feel so accomplished by the end. Some schools have been working in trailers for over 8 years. Making an impact on someones life is an amazing thing.

What would you improve about this program?
nothing, the program was great!
