About Program

International volunteers on this program work at one of two orphanages in Ho Chi Minh city. Depending on the orphanage, tasks can vary slightly, but in general are the following:

- Caring for 10 – 20 orphans.
- Teaching of songs, games and art, as well as some English.
- Teaching English to primary level children at one of the two orphanages.
- Assisting with physical therapy to some of the 35 disabled children at one of the orphanages.
- At one of the orphanages, volunteers at times also assist with gardening, farming or (basic) construction work.

One orphanage is a half hour bus ride from the volunteer accommodation and the other is a 75 minute bus ride away.

Volunteers stay in shared accommodation with anything ranging from 10 to a maximum of 36 volunteers (depending on the season). The house is fully equipped and is located at about a 20 minute drive from the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. NGO staff provides orientation and three meals a day (from Monday to Friday).

This program is no longer offered. View more programs from International Volunteer Services.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Volunteering in Vietnam

I’ve had the chance to live three months in Ho Chi Minh City, sharing unique moments with the children of the Pagoda orphanage.
I spent the day at the orphanage, taking care of children and playing with them. We stayed in a house with other volunteers; a very friendly host venue. Members of the association and the volunteers were always available and willing to listen. You can also visit Ho Chi Minh and its surroundings during the weekend, which allows you to discover the country.
I can’t find the right words to describe this extraordinary experience. I learnt a lot thanks to this volunteer placement, and I sincerely think this has changed my life. It’s an intense human adventure with regards to discovery, emotions and sharing. I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in the Vietnamese culture, a culture so different from ours. In particular, the children’s laughter, the long silent exchanges with the monks and the happiness of simplicity are my fondest memories.
I hope that with these few words I’ve given you the will to go there. You should live the experience in order to understand to which point it can impress you.
