Who is this program for?
The Irish Arts and Culture Program is for students interested in a broad-exposure art program in Europe with tangible takeaways. This is a low-stress program designed to facilitate self-exploration using the arts as a vehicle for this journey.

Many of our past students have enjoyed taking part in a community-based program. This means that you will have your own home, neighbors and really get the chance to be part of our town. It also means that you will develop independence in an environment that resembles college life.

About Program

The Irish Arts & Culture Program gives you an opportunity to explore and cultivate your creative side, travel throughout Ireland, build independence and develop an appreciation of Irish arts and culture.

Daily workshops with professional Irish artists in photography, creative writing, charcoal, painting, sculpture and jewellery making. This program is all about exploring and developing your creative side and no prior artistic experience is needed – Only enthusiasm! Most importantly you will build your independence, living and working with your peers in the beautiful coastal town of Bundoran County Donegal.

This creative, light-hearted and community-oriented program is for students who would love to spend their time making art in a tranquil coastal village on Ireland's west coast.

We welcome students from all walks of life and backrounds and have hosted many LGBTQIA+ students over the years. Ireland and Europe in general are quite progressive with regards to LGBTQIA+ policy, lifestyle and support. Irish Gap Year provides support to our LGBTQIA+ students to help them feel secure and safe during their time with us.

Impact 🌎

Irish Gap Year is a Carbon Negative Company, meaning we remove more C02 from the amosphere through our ecological volunteering than we create as an organization (including student flights to Europe).

Irish Gap Year Director, Ryan Allen is the Chair of the Gap Year Association's Sustainability Commitee and created the Association's Climate Action Plan in 2023.

Fall 2024 Arts&Culture

I came to this program because my high experience had completely stripped me of my love of learning and I wanted something new to try and reanimate myself. This program did just that. If my morning views of the mountains and the cliffs with crashing waves and cows outside my kitchen window weren’t enough, the hospitality of the people in Bundoran and the program leaders along with the exceptional teaching from the art tutors made this an entirely unique and deeply meaningful experience. It’s going to be hard to leave and harder not to come back to Bundoran forever.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do everything! Jump in the freezing cold water, explore the cliffs and the caves and the mountains, make art in ways you never thought you could. Keep an open mind to new experiences but make sure you take time to yourself when you need as well.
Pros
  • Beautiful landscape
  • Incredible art tutors
  • Lovely people
Cons
  • Whack houses
  • Dodgy housemate dynamics

Simply Spectacular

I came to the Irish Gap Year after a while of being down after some life events, alongside the stress of school. Although concerned about being out of country for so long, I was astonished at how much of a good experience this was! You meet a lot of great people, learn a lot of new things, and see many new places to boot. You really get the experience of being left alone for a while, even if you’re still well protected and surrounded with peers. So, obviously, I would highly recommend this if you’re looking to explore and meet people just like you, alongside perusing an interest you may have not focused on beforehand.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I’d have gone out more with everyone… Probably! I did enjoy my relaxation time, though!
Pros
  • Great Leaders
  • Informative Trips & Tutors
  • Beautiful Area
Cons
  • Might get Homesick
  • Settling in may take time

THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE

I had the absolute best time of my life on this program. From meeting lifelong friends to growing as a human and an artist this program has changed the way I’ll think about culture, history, art and people forever!! All the roommates including mine were very well chosen. The dynamics of all the houses were always on point. The pubs in Bundoran are lovely and safe with lots of families around. Although, the time spent in the Portbeg Holiday Homes are much more memorable. The dynamic between the group is always an amazing mix of casual time and fun outings. The staff and teachers were so caring and supportive throughout the whole program. I use a motorized scooter for my physical disability so coming across a program that supports that is quite rare. Not only did they plan accessible trips and accessible restaurants they purchased with their own money a ramp for the van we use everyday. Never once did any of them make me feel like a hassle or “too much”, as some past programs I’ve done have. The staff also bought us groceries every week based off a list we created and got us medicine from their own pockets when we were sick. One of my fondest memories is Jules ( part of the staff), making me breakfast while I was sick in bed. It’s these smalls things that IGY does that makes Bundoran feel like home.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Black pudding. I did not like black pudding I do not recommend! Although this is a famous Irish dish.
Pros
  • Thoughtful staff
  • Creative people
  • Flexible Schedule
Cons
  • Mid tier homes
  • A while’s away from town

Irish Gap Year Experience

Honestly I think my experience here on Irish Gap Year was something I’ll take with me for the rest of my life. The people, the place, the staff, everything was pretty perfect. It was nice to slow down and fully take in all that’s around you. I feel like this program gave that to me. I was in the Art program segment of it and it was just what I needed. I don’t have much of an art background but the tutors were so helpful and helped me discover what makes art, art. The town itself was really beautiful and it was easy to make this town feel like home.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I think if I could do this all over again, I would pack more rain gear. Like maybe some rain pants OR SOMETHING. It rains quite a lot here in the winter months and can be quite cold so a rain jacket is definitely a must. I was so thankful to have it on hand with me the whole time. Some rain pants would have changed the game though.
Pros
  • The housing
  • The location of houses relative to the town
  • The art tutors
