About Program

From this island paradise in the Mediterranean, you’ll do research, conservation and field work on the coast and at sea.
There are few better places in the world to study marine life. Teeming with biodiversity, the Mediterranean Sea supports more than 15,000 different species, several of them unique to this area. On the beautiful island of Mallorca you’ll study this valuable ecosystem up close, combining ecology, biology and environmental studies in your multidisciplinary work.

Snorkeling in marine protected areas, you’ll discover which key species are under threat from marine pollution and human activity – and how to make a difference. Your days will consist of field work out at sea and in coastal areas, combined with lectures and hands-on conservation work. On dry land, you’ll have time to explore the spirited island culture, enjoy Mediterranean cuisine or the daily island catch, discover modern art or ancient architectural sites, and chill or play sports on the white-sand beaches.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with CIEE Global Navigator for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

CIEE Palma experience

This program is surprisingly long and intensive for what people may be expecting. The days are long and your pretty much always tired. I would recommend finding friends that you think are cool and bonding with people, it will make the weeks go buy a lot faster. There isn’t as much content as I expected but there were definitely more than enough excursions and adventures. Overall, I would recommend if you have a lot of time and you are interested in marine bio. Be prepared to be tired all day though

Pros
  • Very fun
  • Make lots of friends
  • Learn more about marine bio
Cons
  • Very long
  • Really exhausting
  • A lot of paper work

Rowans Review

I had an amazing trip and got to meet so many new people and it was very interesting. We had a lot of time to ourselves and hangout with our new friends, we were able to do a lot of tourist activities but also indulging ourselves in the culture of Mallorca. Staying with a host family was also a very comforting experience, at the beginning it seemed awkward and uneasy but it continued to get so much better and made it easier to communicate with both your program leaders and host family. Rowan would recommend.

Pros
  • It was cool
  • Lots of culture
  • Very cool people meeting
Cons
  • Jumped right into the culture
  • bland food
  • a lot of pointless classes

Ciee Mallorca marine biology summer abroad program

I had an amazing time on this trip, where I was able to meet new friends and experience new cultures. I went on this trip with my friend, which made it a lot easier to adjust to a homestay and home stay family. Although it was a "marine biology" program, we still had free time and and cultural activities to truly immerse ourselves within Mallorcan "life". With this, we visited Mallorca while a big summer holiday, San Juan, was being held, where all of the students could participate. Love all my new memories!

Pros
  • Beaches
  • New foods
  • Shopping
Cons
  • Lengthy classes
  • No Communication

CIEE Palma Session 1 Summer

I had a wonderful time in Palma, and will leave with many memories of new friends and fun experiences. A highlight from my trip was celebrating the local, traditional, holiday, San Juan. I loved camping in the town Alcudia with my new, and old, friends, and hiking to a gorgeous beach. In addition, I particularly enjoyed watching the sunset with my host mom and friend, and enjoying traditional mallorcan dinners on the beach. I will most definitely miss the daily gelato runs and exploring the city of Palma.

Pros
  • beaches and oceans
  • sealife

Palma

Personally, I enjoyed my visit to Palma with the CIEE program. If you enjoy meeting new people, getting to experience a new city, culture and lifestyle for a month, then you’ll enjoy this program. The only things you need to know coming in are some basic conversational skills, the fact that you’ll be walking and visiting the beach a lot, and that the snack flavors here are very strange. The city is beautiful to walk around in, and it’s incredibly convenient how you don’t need a car to go everywhere.

Pros
  • Photo opportunities
  • Meet new people
Cons
  • Blisters

Marine science in Spain

Very fun program! I made lots of good friends and had a fun time! I would definitely recommend this program to high school students who want to study or travel abroad because that is program is exactly that. This program was also good for learning Spanish because even though it wasn’t the focus of the program I still used it every day and I got comfortable talking to locals in the area. The program also helped me realize that I can study abroad and live in another country without too much difficulty!

Pros
  • Personal growth
  • Travel
  • Learning
Cons
  • Busy
  • Very hot weather
