An unforgettable experience in Sri Lanka

With my best friend, we went for a month in Sri Lanka with projects abroad doing the high school special project. For one month, we took care of disadvantaged children in a small village one hour from Colombo. We teached them English, hygiene, we played with them ... We had an incredible experience in a beautiful country, with a culture completely different from ours. We were out of this world and had an amazing experience. Despite the heat, the humidity, and the very spicy food, we discovered a culture we do not know, a culture I loved, and sumptuous landscapes. Between wild beaches, dream beaches and mountains, where the air is much purer and pleasant, Sri Lanka also has a very specific and beautiful architecture. I would like to thank projects abroad and in particular the high school project staff who greatly helped us to live this unforgettable experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I advise future travelers abroad projects in Sri Lanka to be ready to eat very spicy and endure a heat often very humid and very difficult to withstand. But I also advise them to prepare their cameras to take full advantage of the most beautiful landscapes of countries of Indian culture.

thank you projects abroad

In the summer of 2018 I went to Sri Lanka together with a friend of mine. I have had an amazing 3 weeks during the medical volunteering in Sri Lanka, for real the time flies when you are traveling with projects abroad. The programme was perfect because of the variety. We had time to see the beautiful culture of Sri Lanka, visit different hospitals and most important to help the people in disadvantaged community’s. And I am really thankful projects abroad made this experience possible. So thank you!!

What would you improve about this program?
I really don’t have an idea of an improvement for the programme. Because for me the programme was perfect.

A life shaping experience

I value my stay in Sri Lanka extremely highly, the ability for me to be able to travel abroad as a high school student gave me the ability to experience travelling without family in a safe environment. Staying with a host family really allowed me to connect to the experience more than if I was in a hotel, and they were great with cooking vegetarian food for me, and it was incredibly rewarding to see the work we were doing. The staff were helpful and friendly and helped me go on spontaneous market trips before leaving, they definitely also helped lessen the culture shock. The other participants were great and it allowed me to meet new people from across the world and have a good group atmosphere for working and travelling on the weekend. It was an amazing experience that shaped me as a person.

What would you improve about this program?
There was a bit of time each day we spent at the host families over lunch when we could have been at the school

Medicine in Sri Lanka

One of the most cherishing moments of my time in Sri Lanka was witnessing a natural birth. It is one of those experiences often overlooked in America because people get caught up in so many other hustle and bustles. Watching that baby's head peek out and then slide out crying until wrapped safely into a blanket encased in his mother's arms was truly an emotional event. This situation really connected medicine, erasing all the boundaries between nations and between people. Ultimately, we all are reduced to our primordial instincts—the stuff that makes us humans and natural beings on Earth.
