About Program

VAC places pre-med, medical, nursing, and gap year students in hospitals, clinics, and community health organizations across Cape Town's public and private healthcare sectors, where high demand meets resource-constrained care.

You may shadow professionals in general practice, infectious disease, OBGYN, pediatrics, or dentistry, observing consultations, treatment planning, and daily clinic or hospital operations. Most placements are observational, working 20–35 hours a week alongside health education, outreach, and administrative support.

Many VAC alumni have gone on to medical school and other healthcare graduate programs, and describe this internship as a formative addition to their journey, one that gave them real-world perspective and a standout experience future doctors rarely get before they've even started their training.

Program Highlights

  • Exposure across specialties — Shadow professionals in general practice, infectious disease, OBGYN, pediatrics, or dentistry, observing consultations, treatment planning, and daily clinic operations.
  • Real insight into resource-constrained healthcare — Work alongside professionals delivering care in Cape Town's public and private healthcare sectors, gaining perspective that's hard to find in a classroom.
  • A destination built around one city, not a catalogue of them — VAC specializes in Cape Town alone, so the team guiding your placement is the same team who welcomes you on arrival and supports you throughout.
  • Weekly Culture Series activities and participant meet-ups — Regular group activities and excursions run throughout the year, creating built-in opportunities to explore Cape Town alongside a community that's already here.
  • A city made for exploring — Beyond the internship, live in a city consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful, with mountains, ocean, and vineyards all within reach.

More Than I Expected From a Medical Internship

I came to Cape Town because VACorps offered something I had struggled to find elsewhere: the opportunity to gain meaningful clinical experience over the summer. With school, research, and other commitments during the academic year, it had been difficult to find a short-term placement without prior clinical experience. This program felt like the perfect way to prepare for medical school while learning in a new environment.

I expected to spend most of my time observing medical professionals and helping with basic tasks, but the internship went far beyond that. At a community-based healthcare clinic, I gained practical exposure to patient care, clinical procedures, and the day-to-day realities of working in medicine. I was trusted to learn through observation, guided practice, and direct engagement with healthcare professionals.

The experience exceeded my expectations and gave me a much clearer understanding of clinical medicine. I am incredibly grateful for the skills I developed, the responsibility I was given, and the opportunity to learn much more than what I expected.

From Curiosity to Clarity

I decided to come to Cape Town as an opportunity to gain valuable experience, broaden my perspective, and better understand how different communities function. I was especially interested in working hands-on in the medical field and supporting underserved communities. During my internship with a community-based healthcare organization, I had the chance to work closely with medical professionals and actively engage in clinical work, which gave me a much deeper understanding of how healthcare operates in practice. While I came here focused on developing my academic and career interests, I did not expect to have so much fun or make such meaningful connections. The people I met both in the workplace and among the other interns brought diverse perspectives that I learned so much from. This experience became a perfect balance of professional growth and personal enjoyment, and it will definitely be one of the highlights of my gap year.

Exploring Healthcare and Culture in Cape Town

I chose Cape Town because I wanted an experience completely different from anything I had done before. Being here for two months exceeded my expectations. I made lifelong friends, had unforgettable experiences, and grew a lot as a person. During my internship at a public healthcare clinic in one of Cape Town’s suburbs, I had the opportunity to rotate through different departments and observe medicine firsthand. The doctors were welcoming and always willing to answer questions, and conversations with both doctors and patients became the most meaningful part of the experience. These interactions helped me understand the importance of culture, communication, and connection in healthcare.

Outside of the internship, Cape Town itself was incredible. The VAC staff were welcoming and supportive from the moment I arrived, which made me feel right at home. The weekly activities and cultural evenings were always fun and insightful, and I learned something new each time. Overall, this has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It strengthened my interest in medicine and showed me how important communication and support are in providing even the most basic patient care.

An Unforgettable Internship in South Africa

I absolutely loved my placement. Initially, I thought I would rotate through a different unit each week, but I ended up spending most of my time in the maternity ward because I enjoyed it so much. During my internship, I observed 23 deliveries and a number of interesting medical cases. I also learned a great deal about how the healthcare system here operates.

Overall, the medical officers and professional nurses were wonderful to work with. They are often more direct than doctors and nurses in the U.S., but I came to appreciate that approach and found it to be very effective.

I am incredibly grateful for my time in South Africa and will carry this experience with me throughout my future career in healthcare. One of my personal goals in coming to Cape Town was to spend time away from home and learn how to navigate my anxiety in a healthy and effective way. I feel proud that I was able to do that, and it made the experience even more meaningful.

A rewarding internship in one of the Worlds most unique and beautiful cities

My experience in Cape Town was truly unforgettable. I’m incredibly grateful to the entire VACorps team for their kindness and support throughout my stay. From day one, they made me feel welcome, safe, and part of a community.

The internship itself far exceeded my expectations. I loved being able to work hands-on with patients and learn about medicine in under-resourced township communities. This experience helped me achieve my goal of gaining real-world clinical exposure while deepening my understanding of healthcare challenges in these settings. I also learned to navigate language barriers—something I encounter at home—and now feel far more confident communicating across them.

Beyond the internship, I had the chance to explore Cape Town’s many wonders—from the mountains and ocean to its incredible food and vibrant culture. I learned so much, gained valuable professional experience, and felt that my work made a meaningful contribution.

Overall, my time in Cape Town with VACorps was an experience I’ll always cherish. I highly recommend this program to anyone seeking a rewarding internship abroad and the chance to immerse themselves in one of the world’s most unique and beautiful cities.

A Life-Changing Dental Internship in South Africa

I wanted to intern in a dental clinic abroad to gain real hands-on experience—not only for my dental school applications, but also to grow personally and expand my knowledge. I had always wanted to travel to Africa, so I knew I’d be interning somewhere on the continent. South Africa, and Cape Town specifically, offered the perfect mix of vibrance and serenity—mountains and beaches, a lively college-town feel, and countless places to explore!

While here, I worked at the Khayelitsha Site B CHC Hospital, specifically in the dental department. During my internship, I gained valuable shadowing hours for my dental school applications, and the experience also fulfilled the global engagement requirement for my degree. I even had the chance to work as a dental assistant, which was incredible. What I’ll remember most, though, are the people. Every doctor, hygienist, assistant, receptionist, and security guard was kind, respectful, and welcoming. I’m so grateful for the amazing connections I made through this experience and proud to call Dr. Sukha and his team part of my dental family.

One of my favorite parts of the internship was comforting patients. While shadowing, I was often the hand they reached for when they felt nervous, and being able to help calm their fears—even in small ways—was truly heartwarming. Experiences like these reminded me why I want to pursue a career in dentistry and deepened my appreciation for the human side of care.

What I’ll miss most about Cape Town is always having something to do! Whether it was a beach day at Camps Bay, exploring a local market, or hiking a mountain, there was always an adventure waiting. I stayed for just about a month, but I’d recommend five weeks—after orientation week, you’ll still have a full month to work and explore the city, giving you plenty of time to experience everything Cape Town has to offer. One tip for living in Observatory: just like anywhere else, stay aware of your surroundings and make use of all the resources available to you—better safe than sorry.

Everyone at VAC was wonderful and clearly cared deeply about their students. The weekly activities were fun and a great way to connect with other interns, especially those living in different houses. I’m so thankful for VAC, particularly for the orientation week—it provided such a thoughtful introduction to Cape Town, covering both its historical and tourist highlights.

This experience was truly life-changing!

I chose Cape Town for my internship because of its endless activities and opportunities! I was also drawn to the unique intersection of cultures and people. What I loved most about Cape Town? The people, the food, the activities—honestly, everything!

During my time at Retreat Healthcare Clinic, I gained invaluable personal and professional experience. Being immersed in a different healthcare system, with its own benefits and challenges, allowed me to witness firsthand how it operates while shadowing doctors and nurses. The staff at the clinic were incredibly kind and helpful, always taking the time to teach me and answer my questions despite their busy schedules. Some of the most memorable moments included witnessing a birth, speaking with patients and healthcare professionals about their experiences, and, of course, holding all the adorable babies!

What I’ll miss most about Cape Town? My friends at VAC 😢, the amazing food, and the breathtaking hikes. Eight weeks was the perfect amount of time for my internship, but I was so sad to leave—I would have loved even more time here! The weekly VAC activities were a highlight, allowing us to explore the city’s top attractions with our group, without the hassle of planning. Plus, I had plenty of free time on weekends, which I used to take unforgettable trips to Kruger National Park and the Garden Route.

Above all, I’m incredibly grateful for the VACorps staff and the team at Retreat Clinic for their generosity, warmth, and kindness.

A Transformative Journey: Exploring Medicine and Community in Cape Town

I chose Cape Town because I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and immerse myself in a culture with different values, languages, traditions, and art. The city’s rich diversity provided exactly that. I was also looking for a place with plenty to do outside of work, and Cape Town, with its blend of mountains, ocean, and vibrant city life, offered endless opportunities. I spent my free time hiking Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, exploring tidal pools in Camps Bay and Kalk Bay, and sampling incredible food at the Old Biscuit Mill and Oranjezicht Market.

I pursued two internships in Cape Town to explore different career paths that interested me. At a public hospital, I shadowed and assisted nurses and doctors treating patients from across Africa, gaining hands-on experience in admissions, assisting with births, and learning to apply casts. At the Women’s Shelter, I worked with abused women and children, leading both individual and group counseling sessions. This experience allowed me to connect with clients and their families on a deeper level.

My time in both settings helped me understand what I value in a work environment. I realized how important it is for me to engage in hands-on work while also forming meaningful connections with colleagues and the people I serve. Now, looking back, I’m grateful for the skills I’ve gained, the people I’ve met, and the personal growth I’ve experienced during this journey.
