My experience

My name is Clowie, and joining the Go Abroad China program has been one of the best experiences of my life. I didn’t just see the tourist side of China, I got to live like a local, riding the subway, going to school, and becoming part of my host family. They welcomed me with so much love, and I felt like one of their own. The teachers were amazing and really helped me improve my Chinese through full immersion. We also visited incredible places like the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. Even with a small budget, I had a great time since everything was so affordable. This was my first time outside the U.S., and it completely changed how I see the world. I’m so thankful to Go Abroad China for making this possible.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I would have to say traveling on the subway. At first I was very anxious but by my third time I started to get confident. But there was on experience specifically that made me panic. I was on my way to class and suddenly close to my stop many people got on. I was squished between many people and pushed to the back. When my stop came I tried to get off but the people that were coming in kept pushing me back. I started to panic but got someone’s attention he was a boy around my age and I told him I needed to get off. People were still coming on but he moved out of the way and made it easier. I ended up needing to push through and made it JUST before the doors closed.
Pros
  • Improved my Chinese
  • Got to try many new foods
  • Got to experience a different culture
Cons
  • Bad tap water
  • Bug bites

Learning Chinese is so fun!

I recently completed a 1:1 Chinese course, and it was an absolute game-changer! Here’s why:

1.Personalized Learning:
- Tailored lessons based on my goals (e.g., conversational fluency, HSK prep).
- The teacher adapted to my pace, making even tricky grammar feel manageable.

2. Cultural Immersion:
- Beyond textbooks, we discussed real-life scenarios, idioms, and even Chinese history—like the stories behind the Great Wall!

3.Flexible & Interactive:
- Classes were dynamic, mixing speaking drills, role-plays (e.g., ordering food in a Beijing hutong), and fun apps like HelloChinese.

4. Teacher’s Passion:
- My and my boy’s 老师 (lǎoshī) were patient and encouraging, turning mistakes into learning moments.

Tip: If you’re studying in China, pair classes with local experiences (e.g., bargaining at markets) to practice ASAP!

**Verdict**: 10/10 – Highly recommend for anyone serious about leveling up their Chinese!"*

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
China is far more developed than I ever imagined-modern cities, cutting-edge tech, and efficient infrastructure everywhere. It completely shattered my stereotypes. If you get the chance, I highly recommend visiting to experience it yourself!"
Pros
  • "A major advantage was learning not just everyday conversation, but also Chinese culture and history-plus authentic expressions you'd never find in textbooks. For example, I had no idea the word '卷' (juan) is used to describe hyper competitiveness

Flexible and Affordable: My Chinese Lessons at Global Village

I am a doctoral student from Japan. From 2023 to 2025, I took Chinese lessons at Global Village for two years. To be honest, the main reason I chose this school was the price. I was looking for an affordable option near Tsinghua University and happened to find it. Before my study abroad program began, I took online lessons, and after arriving in China, I attended in-person classes. Whether in a group or one-on-one, lessons were scheduled with students’ availability in mind. I really appreciated how flexible they were. There were also occasional extracurricular activities, and it was possible to take intensive lessons during the summer and winter breaks. I would recommend this school to those who find university Chinese classes unsatisfactory or who want to study while working.

Great experience

Global village is a great school with a very good team of professional teachers. I had a great time learning Chinese with my teacher: as a language teacher myself, I can tell she's very talented. I also occasionally had class with other teachers who were also very skilled and playful. I'm a person who likes to have fun and enjoy an open hearted conversation, and I feel like that was always the case here: the teachers were immediately quite friendly and willing to share personal thoughts about many topics, there's also a good sense of community and you easily mix up with other students and teachers during the group activities.

What was your funniest moment?
I think I had fun every time, my teacher has become way more like a friend by now so we joke all the time.

Excellent School for Learners at Any Level

I started studying HSK5 level at Global Village School taking 1-to-1 classes morning and afternoon 3 days a week. The quality of the teaching is very high, with both my teachers also being very adaptable to both my level and my learning goals. The school is very helpful in organising a lesson plan with you that is tailored to your objectives. For example, I wanted to improve my speaking as well as study HSK content, so they suggested that I divide my classes between higher-level speaking and the HSK curriculum. This worked very well for me. The school have also been gracious in giving occasional extra classes as a reward for completing a certain number of class hours. They also offer mock HSK tests whether you are preparing for a real test or just curious about your level. At the competitive prices they offer this school is certainly the best option in the area for those who are looking to make quick progress with learning Mandarin. The staff are friendly, helpful and accommodating, and the teachers are first rate.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have started earlier!
Pros
  • Value for money
  • Accommodating and flexible
  • Friendly

Intensive Program at Global Village School

I had an intensive language program at the Global Village School for 4 weeks to improve my Chinese. Although my language skills was difficult to grade as an heritage student (speaking and listening advanced, reading and writing low to intermediate), the staff was very helpful to find classes that suit me best. All the teachers (several small groups, 1 to 1) were excellent. Due to the small size of the groups (3-6 people) the lessons were very interactive. I asked them a lot of questions and they were very comitted to answer all of them. I met a lot of good people (also good for sozializing) and had a good time. As they offer online courses, you could also continue classes when you‘re back at home or travelling to other places. At least, I intend to do that.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Not one thing.
Pros
  • Excellent teachers
  • Small groups and 1 to 1
  • Live and online
Cons
  • Wish I had even more time there
  • The building is rather old, but the facilities good

Excellent Learning Experience at Global Village School

I’ve been attending Chinese classes at Global Village School for a few months, and I’ve had a fantastic experience. As a beginner, I was nervous about learning a new language, but the teachers have been incredibly patient and supportive. They create a welcoming environment that makes learning enjoyable and not overwhelming.

The classes are well-structured, focusing on both speaking and listening skills, which has really helped me gain confidence in using the language. The teachers are approachable and take the time to explain difficult concepts, especially pronunciation and tones, which can be tricky. The small class sizes ensure personalised attention, and the learning materials are engaging and easy to follow.

Overall, I highly recommend Global Village School to anyone interested in learning Chinese. The combination of great teachers, flexible scheduling, and supportive atmosphere has made this a rewarding learning experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I had the chance to do it all over again, I’d probably focus more on practicing speaking from the very beginning. When I first started, I was a bit hesitant to speak up and made the mistake of prioritizing grammar and vocabulary over actual conversation. Now, I realize that real-life communication is where I’ve seen the most improvement. I’d also set aside more time for immersive experiences, like watching Chinese shows or speaking with native speakers outside of class, to get used to the flow of the language in everyday situations. Overall, though, I’m really happy with the progress I’ve made, and these small adjustments would just help me get there faster.
Pros
  • Personalised attention
  • Supportive environment
  • Engaging materials
Cons
  • Pacing
  • Limited cultural exposure
  • Pronunciation challenges
