Great Experience for My First Time Abroad

With the pandemic shuttering the global opportunities I planned to attend through my college, I applied to GE to try and still go abroad before graduation. I’m happy to say it was a great experience!

I appreciated how GE helped prepare me for an internship by looking over my resume and having me take a quiz to find my strengths and build a cover letter around them. This was a great addition to the program and something I intend to use to apply for jobs in the workforce beyond the GE program. My advisor was great about answering my questions and making sure all of my paperwork was finished in time to depart.

A minor complaint of mine is that GE has no transportation from the airport to your flat. As someone who’d never flown on a plane, didn’t know how tubes worked, and had been up for over 24 hours traveling, it was difficult to navigate from the airport to my flat, even though I’d brought a map of the city to help. The housing itself was quite nice, with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and being right next to a grocery store and having two tub stations nearby.

Regarding my internship, I was with a great company and learned a lot as a content writer, but I did apply for public relations first and journalism second, and though I didn’t mind my placement at all, if future students are looking for a specific job rather than a broad placement, they may be a bit disappointed.

The best part of my program was by far Gregg and Shani, who were very kind and prompt in responding to my questions and concerns. When I got sick during the program, Gregg was great about giving me information on what doctor offices my student insurance covered and what papers I needed to fill out. Also, many of the places Gregg took the group were not tourist destinations, but niche places you’d never know about unless you had someone from the area with you. This was great, and really added to the experience in a way I wouldn’t have gotten had I come to London on my own without GE.

I also enjoyed how Gregg and Shani showed us students a PowerPoint of how we would feel throughout our stay during Orientation—from the initial excitement to understandable fatigue to adapting to your new environment. When I did find myself slipping into the “understandable fatigue” stage, it really helped to know that my feelings were a natural part of going to a different country and would improve—which they soon did.

Overall I would recommend GE as a solid option for building your work portfolio abroad. I never felt like I was in danger walking around the city, and was able to do a lot of sightseeing on the weekends! Considering it was my first time abroad, GE was great about preparing me for what to expect and offer help if I needed it.

Pros
  • Great Program Coordinators
  • Great optional weekend events to explore London's culture
  • Free tube travel for the first week so you can explore after work
Cons
  • Getting to housing from airport on arrival can be tricky depending on where you're going
  • Broad placement may disappoint some students
  • Quite expensive

Life-changing summer!

What an incredible summer in Barcelona! After interning with Eatwith and living with four amazing roommates, Global Experiences truly gave me the summer of my dreams in Spain. At Eatwith, I was surrounded by the kindest group of women that have inspired me to chase my goal of working in Europe in the future. I know I have lifelong contacts from my Eatwith support system. Inma and Elena did a phenomenal job providing guidance and aid to the entire intern group. The two also organized a variety of group activities spanning from day trips to Costa Brava and Girona, and a picnic at Ciutadella Park. I think my entire program can agree that Inma and Elena love their jobs and truly care about the success of their students abroad and back in the states. Thank you Global Experiences!

Pros
  • Central housing
  • Vibrant, active city
  • Plenty of coordinated student activities

Best Decision

I loved interning through global experiences. I could not have had a better time. My roommates were incredible and without GE, I would have never met them or any of the other amazing people I did. This experience has taught me so much. I learned how to come out of my comfort zone and what it is like to live in a home away from home. I learned so much about work life, living abroad, and about myself as a person. I could not have asked for a better internship placement and if I could do this experience every summer I would! Highly recommend.

The Whole Package

Global Experiences provided such a well rounded intern abroad summer for me in Sydney. The internship placement was smooth and I was very happy with my host company. The hours for my internship were flexible and I was able to gain new accounting knowledge. I was also able to travel around Australia a good bit as well on the weekends. The social scene at our housing and around Sydney was such a fun time. I would definitely recommend this program. The money in life will come back, but the adventures you make won’t!

Go Travel Abroad!!!

Global Experiences provided an amazing program with great people and an incredible living arrangement here in Sydney!
I would definitely recommend this company if you’re in your young 20’s looking for programs to get internships with other college aged kids looking to travel in their free time.
There are a lot of different programs that you can apply to and all offer ways to earn credits for traveling.
Overall the program was very easy to apply and get set up with, and they provided everything i needed to get abroad and to get credits at my college for my internship.

GE Australia

This trip was one of my best decisions! I have always wanted to come to Australia but knew I would want to do it in more than just a vacation - this 8 week internship was a great way to learn the city and explore surrounding cities. The other participants were just as enthusiastic about the program and wanted to make the most of their time here. The on the ground coordinator was super helpful in addressing any problems that may have arose during our time here. Lastly, the accommodations were really nice - all had our own kitchen and bathroom with a shared kitchen for a small group among countless amenities throughout the building.

Interning down under

I really enjoyed my internship. I feel like I got a jump ahead in terms of experience in my field of study. My coworkers and supervisors were great- very friendly and willing to help me learn. Outside of that, being in Australia was an excellent time. Even though it was winter, I was able to spend pretty sufficient time on the beach. The GE excursions included a trip to the Hunter Valley wine country and a trip to the Blue Mountains, both of which I enjoyed thoroughly. The living accommodations were nice, too.

Very happy I did an internship abroad!

I am about to end my experience here in Milan and I’m not ready to leave. I have enjoyed this experience so much and believe I have grown as an individual because of it. The program coordinators Amanda and Antonella are very sweet and we’re always there whenever I needed anything. Having both Amanda and Antonella around was a huge comfort and made me feel safer interning abroad. The events and trips planned we’re a lot of fun and made it much easier than having to plan things on my own. Living in Milan for 8 weeks and working here allowed me to immerse myself in Italian culture and lifestyle. The main negative I do have to comment on is all housing options should be provided with air conditioning as Europe reached record high numbers this summer. Without ac I dreaded going back to my apartment despite the apartment itself being in good condition. When my roommates and I were dealing with our very hot apartment both Amanda and Antonella supported us all the way in trying to solve our problems which I’m very grateful for. Overall, if you can study/intern abroad this is your sign to go for it!

Pros
  • Culture
  • Food
  • Beautiful Sights
Cons
  • Housing
  • Heat
  • Unreliable public transportation at times

Best summer of my life!

This was easily one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. Interning abroad leads to a lot of personal and professional growth, and is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am so happy I took. Inma and Elena were our supervisors and they were attentive, helpful, and super fun! The events they set up for us were a great way to learn more about Spanish/Catalan culture while having a great time and trying new things. They were also a great way to meet people in your host city and make friends!! Plus, I really feel like my career path benefited from my internship and taught me so much. Overall this was an amazing experience that I will forever be glad I did!

Pros
  • Experiencing and immersing yourself into a new culture
  • Meeting new and amazing people
  • Lots of professional growth and connections
Cons
  • Culture shock/discomfort at first

“I travel continuously, and I see many cities, but there is nowhere like London.” – Norman Foster

My only issues lie not with the on-site staff, but with what GE marketed the program to be. I applied for a specific internship opportunity listed on their website (I believe it said specifically "work for a contemporary art gallery"), and I ended up working for a museum of architecture. None of my blame lies in Shani, she did a great job aligning my interests, qualifications, and the opportunities present in London this summer. However, it has felt like false marketing on GE's side to promote one thing, and provide another.

I would have no issues if instead they marketed a generalized opportunity (such as "work within the art scene of London"), rather than a niche position that I applied specifically for.

Besides that, Gregg and Shani do a fantastic job ensuring the safety and support of 75+ young adults, many of whom it is their first time in the UK. The activities Gregg puts on are always diverse, affordable, and their own unique hidden gem that made me feel like a true "Londoner". Shani somehow manages to find jobs for dozens of students and their targeted careers, while juggling communication between various companies and international students. Although the internship may not be your dream profession, no matter what, the opportunity teaches you invaluable lessons on how to pursue that career.

If you need/want an international internship and want to push your own limits in a foreign country (all while still being supported by staff and friends), I would recommend this program.

Pros
  • Free, diverse activities everywhere
  • Beautiful city that is close to countless other places worth visiting
  • Diverse and inclusive environment
Cons
  • like any other city, there is crime and crowds
  • Housing was not the best, but not un-manageable
  • It can be expensive
