Marketing & Business Development Internship with Start Me Up

Start Me Up is a great internship program that leaves you with valuable experience in the sector you are working in. I interned for a coworking hub in Bali and helped them with their marketing and business development initiatives. There was a lot of work but so much to learn which was invaluable and I was exposed to so many intelligent entrepreneurs and start-ups.

I received so much support from both my workplace and the Start Me Up team which was reassuring as starting work in a new field can be quite overwhelming! I would 100% recommend the program, especially in Bali as there are so many people in similar positions as you as well as the fact that Bali is overall an amazing place to work in. Having just graduated, it was the perfect time to relocate, explore a new sector, and navigate my career through such a fun and helpful program.

Pros
  • Fun and valuable experience
  • Meet lots of interesting people
  • Lots of support

Digital Marketing Internship in Conservation Technology

In late 2022, I took part in Start Me Up's Bali internship program. During my internship, I was responsible for content and digital marketing. My role was to research and conceptualize content for social media, find potential collaborators, edit video and design content.
I was mainly looking into storytelling for conservation and sustainability. It involved lots of research and getting creative with content ideas. I also got the chance to identify local influencers who could act as collaborators. My internship was fun and friendly and I got to work on lots of different areas and learn how to use new software, which was a cool experience.

Pros
  • very friendly and fun
  • great experience
  • learn many things

Start Me Up careers connected me with Riteband a Swedish research-based company that is creating a new music marketplace and an app.

I enjoyed my time interning as a Junior Graphic designer with Riteband and it was a great match from the get-go! Although, I came in with previous experience in design I was still able to learn so much in such a short amount of time. During the internship, I created a series of icons, social media graphics and a presentation deck. I particularly loved the creative freedom that the role allowed and they really involved me within the company even though it was fully remote. I have also since continued to work for them as a freelancer, which has been great for my CV and portfolio!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Meeting all of the team for the first time over zoom!

Start Me Up Remote Internship

The start me up remote internship program was a really great experience and one I would highly recommend. With all the restrictions due to COVID-19 it was an excellent way to get internship experience while unable to travel and one that has left me with lots of valuable skills especially when it comes to remote working. The activities run during your internship too provide an excellent avenue for self-growth and career discovery. Hearing talks from people all over the world doing different things and taking part in workshops to improve both your hard and soft skills was a real highlight. I would recommend this program to anyone interested in start-ups, remote working or simple looking for an internship and work experience down a less traditional avenue.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Embrace all the opportunities and experiences on the program and use them all to your advantage they provide an unparalleled look into start-ups and it is something that will always add value to whatever you do next

Amazing opportunity!!

I participated in the Start Me Up remote internship program this past summer and worked with an organization based in Bali. I had such a great experience both with my internship program and with the Start Me Up seminars and support. I loved learning so many new skills and advancing my career in a new direction. If you are looking for an amazing opportunity to work partner with a great organization, get continued training from the program, and learn valuable skills for your career, this is for you!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Working for an organization remotely was certainly a change for me, so learning about how to overcome the obstacles that come with that was nerve-wracking! Thankfully, the team at my internship was great and helped me through it.

Start Me Up

Start Me Up is the best opportunity to take when taking steps to develop your career. The sessions that are held, the individual support and the opportunity to meet so many different people around are the world are just some of the reasons why I came back for a second year. Even though I wasn't able to go to Bali to complete my internship, the programme that was organised was still extremely engaging and interesting, and I was still able to make friends. I would recommend this program for anyone who wants to learn more about other non-traditional career paths, and also anyone who wants to travel whilst working on something.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Having to make up a product and present it was the scariest thing I had to do. What I did was think of something that I think could be improved and tried to adapt the products already around to the issue at hand.

Traveling & Tech Start-ups

This experience went way beyond my expectations. Being able to intern for a tech startup in Queensland was a once in a lifetime experience Iā€™ll never forget.
While I interned for the startup we worked out of a lively coworking space in the city. We got to meet lots of other startups and some really interesting people. I loved going to the different events around the city (organized by the co-working space), and learning about new areas of tech while picking new skills.
Queensland itself had so much to offer, including the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Surferā€™s Paradise and, of course, the Great Barrier Reef. I loved that despite being winter, it was still warm enough to go to the beach for a swim!
All in all, couldn't recommend going out to Aus to intern more, learn new entrepreneurial skills and meet some cool people.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind. Do everything. See everything. Meet everyone.
Make friends with people in the co-working space, learn from others further down their careers and pick up some Aussie phrases.

Eye-Opening Experience

It was my first time travelling to Asia by myself, so I was a little nervous but very excited. From arrival I felt welcomed, from the driver that picked me up at the airport to the hotel in Ubud that we stayed in for the first weekend. The whole cohort was lovely, and all people wanting to improve themselves and gain something from this experience.

Despite the high cost of the program plus flights, it was one of the best months of my life. I got the chance to work with incredible people, and the kinds of people that move to Bali to create and work on startups are all people I enjoyed learning from. All this was done while learning and exploring a different culture and land, and getting actual professional experience. Plus, what better way to work is there than being able to jump in a pool, lay by the beach, or go surfing when it's all getting a bit much, or simply after a long day of work?

You end up doing so many things you never expected to do. I had never done yoga, surfed, been on a scooter, trekked up a volcano in the middle of the night, or climbed down a cliff to reach one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Not just in terms of exploration, but professionally, I met so many ambitious individuals just going out there and doing what they want to do, ignoring that fear we all have to start something new without anyone knowing if it will work out or not. On top of all that I made good friends, including my boss, whom I'm still in touch with and working for on a voluntary basis (yes, I enjoyed it so much I am now working for free when I can, primarily on weekends...)

I would highly recommend the experience. You would have to save a little bit, which is one thing I would like the program to see is making it a little more accessible. However, I cannot disagree that every bit of that money was well spent and well worth it, and if I could afford it I would have stayed another month more!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One day I was working with my boss in a beach villa by the pool and when we started feeling very unproductive. It was too hot a day and we weren't getting anything done. What surprised me was his reaction; if we're not doing any useful work we might as well jump on a scooter, drive to Seminyak 30 mins away and go to the beach. It was just bizarre the kind of work breaks and the relaxing atmosphere that you find out there.

LOVE START ME UP!

I am so grateful that I applied to Start Me Up and got to live/work in Bali for a month! I worked remotely for a start up in London and developed marketing as well as international communication skills. We traveled on weekends to neighboring Indonesian islands and I got to immerse myself in the culture. The mentors were amazing and will go out of their way to help you. I left feeling like I had grown as an individual and had connections to extremely intelligent and genuine women. I haven't had an interview yet where they haven't asked me about Bali and the skills I learned there. If youā€™re thinking of applying to Start Me Up, you definitely should because you'll get a lot more out of it then just a good traveling experience.

My one tip: Go into this program wanting to get the most out of every moment, you'll regret it if you don't. Say yes to everything and jump into the Bali life style of bare-feet.

Sart Me Up in Bali!

My internship with Start Me Up was incredible! I worked with a really awesome local organization building them a new website and met SO MANY people while I was there. The networking opportunities were great and so were the workshops and dojo (nearly every night). Obviously, a huge bonus to this program is that you're in Bali! We got to work hard during the day on our internships and then spend our nights and weekends exploring the island and even other parts of Southeast Asia. This truly was one of a kind experience that you won't regret! The people and staff were amazing and you get work experience while you travel! My group was awesome and the accommodation was perfect, we were right on the main road in Canggu so we were walking distance to Dojo, the beach, and basically everywhere. It's also cool because the people in your cohort are from all over the world so you make friends that you can stay with when you travel. The food was the best food I've eaten in my life and I honestly would go back just for that! This opportunity with Start Me Up has really opened my eyes to the possibilites of working remotely and I am so happy I found it before I graduated.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of the networking opportunities! I was based at Dojo and met some amazing people that are super willing to help if you ask questions. Go to the workshop events and make sure you explore Bali on the weekends and you will not be disappointed.
