Great Experience!!

I decided to plan this medical mission trip with Maximo Nivel very last minute and I had zero regrets. It has changed my perspective on many topics drastically and taught me so much. My favorite times were working with the doctor and learning about different diagnoses. I also really enjoyed getting to meet the children and see the impact that we made on them that day. I highly recommend getting it to any person aspiring to be in a medical career, current medical professionals, or student studying medicine.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The traditional breakfast foods like refried beans.
Pros
  • Learning about medical diagnoses
Cons
  • Sometimes the translators had a difficult time translating between us and the patients

UK Uni student year abroad

Really enjoyed my 4 weeks here, the host family was really nice and the support staff was very helpful. I had an internship at a hotel which was really enjoyable and good to practice Spanish speaking. The Maximo Nivel institute has lots of activities planned for the week, and the Spanish lessons were of great quality and very flexible to the sorts of things you would want to learn. The actual workbook itself was very detailed and the teaching was superb. Would recommend to university students who need or want to spend time abroad, the perfect place for this.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go out and about to explore different places in Costa Rica, your not here forever and there’s plenty to see.
Pros
  • Good Spanish practice
  • Friendly staff
  • Helpful

Amazing experience

It's very hard to describe just in a few words how great studying with Maximo Nivel was! Everyone in the institute is genuine, kind, and very supportive. Completing a TEFL course is a lot more intense than I could have imagined (probably the most challenging 4 weeks of my life) but 100% worth it. I feel so grateful I had the best teacher: Wayne Summerbell :)

Be prepared to feel challenged (this is definitely NOT a holiday), and more importantly: be prepared to feel satisfied and happy with yourself once you've made it :)

Antigua is the most beautiful city too! It's very easy to get around. As a woman traveling alone, I felt safe during my whole stay there. You'll feel at home in no time :)

Valuable time

This course was incredible to me. I had 3 wonderful classmates who along with our instructor Wayne made this the most memorable experience. This is not a holiday and you get what you put into the course. Wayne was always available and encouraging as we developed ourselves into the next generation of TOEFL teachers.

As a recommendation to those who are considering this program, you should be prepared and focused. You will find this course difficult, but in the there will be success. The host family was welcoming and incredibly inclusive to make me feel comfortable. I am grateful for everyone that I have met and will continue to be a part of community of instructors and students. The rewards are endless with each student who develops their skills in learning a new language.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
It was my first mini-lesson and a simple “how to” presentation was a very anxious.time.
Getting comfortable with the students who were eager to learn was easy as I just had decided to have fun with them. I helped them along the way and in the process my pressure filled lesson was over, Future lessons became easier leading to my final day of the practical teaching week. Everyone was excited and engaged in the activities.
Pros
  • Support from the instructor and fellow students. Everyone was encouraging along the way.
  • Guatemala is the friendliest place I have ever seen and is very affordable
  • Practical lessons with feedback
Cons
  • Distractions of a beautiful country can make you loose your focus
  • Intense study requires required more quiet periods
  • Early morning lessons need more resources available beyond the 6pm office hours the day before. The office is open at 6:45am, but the 7am class needs more time for preparation the day before

A difficult but wonderful four weeks in Antigua

I had a blast doing TEFL at Maximo Nivel in Antigua, in large part thanks to my five-star instructor, Wayne Summerbell. I highly recommend this program. Believe me, it's not a walk in the park. There were moments that I doubted I could complete the tasks at hand, but those trials made the experience that much more fulfilling. Don't worry, Antigua is a very comfortable and safe place and the Maximo staff are super helpful and communicative. If you have any issue, they will be happy to help resolve it. Wayne is a gem of an instructor and there are so many fun activities to take part in throughout the week! My favorites were free Salsa class and soccer night! I've taught ESL as a volunteer for 2 years, and I still found this course to be eye opening and challenging!! You won't regret this experience and you get life time job placement assistance. It's the perfect place to start a worldwide journey teaching English. Just make sure you have instructor Wayne! He's the best :)

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do this again, I would stay a few extra weeks after the course was over. It's not a vacation, so I didn't have a ton of time to explore. But the weekends were free. I still got to climb Volcano Acatenango (extremely difficult) and visit Lake Atitlan. I had to make sure I had all my TEFL homework done by Sunday night though!
Pros
  • Great TEFL trainer Wayne Summerbell
  • Made a ton of friends through Maximo Nivel. TEFLers, Spanish students, and English students!
  • Fun activities provided by Maximo and constant support!
Cons
  • Tough to stay in a hostal and do all the TEFL work. I recomend host family
  • Not a vacation! Be ready for a lot of coursework
  • If you like cold weather, too bad. The climate here is perfect in the winter and quite warm in the summer (April-September)

Far exceeded expectations!

Máximo Nivel far exceeded all my expectations!  This course gave me the confidence and experience needed for my English teaching career.

I was pursuing TEFL certification and one of my friends, who completed this course, recommended it to me. I went through the 3-6 month program and got a 3-month extension as needed. The course was well organized and covered everything from grammar, learning styles, teaching methodology, technical skills for online classes, lesson planning, assessing learners, and more.

I received support throughout the program from my Tefl instructor, Sean. He answered all my questions and was available for anything I needed help with.  A quick Zoom call with him put my fears to rest as he encouraged and guided me with lesson planning during my practical week of teaching. He also gave me helpful feedback after each lesson which fine-tuned my teaching skills so I could better serve my students with every lesson.

After completion, I got my certificate, a letter of recommendation, and job-finding assistance to set me up for success.

I highly recommend Maximo Nivel to those looking to boost their confidence and credibility.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Teaching my first and second class.
The first class I taught, I was pretty confident starting out and I thought I was well prepared. So when I went on with my lesson, I realized the holes in my lesson planning and the necessity of going through each activity beforehand to know exactly how the class will play out. My second class, I was so stressed and I was tweaking every detail about my lesson plan leading up to my class. An hour before my lesson I was in panic mode so I called my instructor. He looked over my lesson plan and assured me it would alright. That class went really smoothly and it turned out to be a pretty good class.

My take away from this is…..
Always communicate with your instructor if you have any problems or need help of any kind instead of stressing.
Be prepared.
Talk with your students. They are really amazing people!
Keep calm and breathe.
Pros
  • Practical teaching experience and the confidence that came through it
  • Guidance and assistance I received from my instructor.
  • The connection with my students.
Cons
  • Stressing myself out with lesson planning and trying to make it perfect
  • Procrastination with assignments
  • Technical difficulties when teaching through zoom

Expensive, but good

It is pretty pricey, not gonna lie. However, if you can afford it, then you can have a very fun time. If you are already very confident abroad, then it may not be worth it for you. However, if you are a solo, new, student, or uncertain traveler, then I would recommend you look into this organization. The Máximo support staff are excellent, welcoming, and understanding. Liam and Andres are the GOATS. There are many volunteer programs here, so you can generally find one that fits your interests and goals.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Due to heavy rains, a power line fell across the road stopping traffic. After moving three miles in two hours, my field manager Liam and I decided to walk. We walked for two hours in the rain at night from Cartago to Tres Ríos. I still can’t believe I did that. It was very scary and less than fun in the moment, but bad days make for fun stories. Shoutout to Liam for letting me rant about US History to keep me calm lol.
Pros
  • Safe environment
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Various programs, experiences, and opportunities
Cons
  • Expensive

A memory of a lifetime

I thoroughly enjoyed every single aspect of the TEFL course in Cusco, Peru. From the moment I touched down in the city, I felt incredibly supported and cared for by the amazing staff at Máximo and beautiful host family. Sean is an amazing instructor! Each day was full of fascinating language lessons, endless laughs, and abundant opportunities to push oneself. We were able to teach for a total of 10 hours throughout the course and with each lesson, my confidence, skills, and strengths as a teacher grew. We received excellent feedback from Sean after each teaching experience that allowed us to acknowledge and strengthen our weaker points. I had so much fun and was truly lit up by the passion that fills each individual at Máximo. Come experience the magic for yourself!

What was your funniest moment?
A lovely member of the Máximo Nivel team suggested I bring a rain coat for the following day as it was supposed to rain.

Well, I live in California so rain is pretty rare. Whenever it does come, I love to walk around in it freely to feel the beautiful drops on my face. So, I decided I didn’t need a rain jacket and was so excited to feel the rain again finally!!

Let’s just say I arrived home with my light denim jeans and light blue T-shirt different colors entirely. It looked and felt like I swam home. Takeaway: Rain is serious in Cusco! California rain does not even come close.
Pros
  • My amazingly sweet, kind host family
  • My incredible fellow TEFL-er Emily- we only spoke Spanish outside the program and she helped me to improve tremendously!
  • Free salsa lessons on Tuesdays and Saturdays!- SO much fun!!
Cons
  • The weather is unpredictable in Cusco so you have to be prepared for super hot sunshine and incredibly heavy rain at all times!

Great Online Program

The Maximo Nivel online TEFL program was very thorough and well done. It definitely prepared me to be able to teach. I enjoyed the self-paced modules, video observations, and support. The ability to teach class for a week through their online program was a great experience. The program was challenging enough that you feel ready to teach in-person or online when you receive your certificate.
Sean provided experienced support both during the self-paced portion when I had questions and in preparing for the online teaching experience. After each lesson I taught during the practicum, he provided me with feedback on how to improve for the next lesson.
