Solo traveler, 1st time volunteering

This trip has been so rewarding and was more than I ever expected! Since day one I have felt welcomed, supported and safe in my volunteer program. Which has made the whole experience of traveling solo that much more memorable. The impact left on me after one month of caring for patients and exploring, will be lifelong. During my time caring for patients I got to assist in managing blood pressures, blood sugars, health education, wound care and so much more! Soon I hope to return! Thank you everyone at Maximo!

What was your funniest moment?
I would have to say my fail at my first zip lining landing at Yalu farm coffee tour! Thank you to my guide for saving me… haha
Pros
  • Improved Spanish fluency
  • Being surrounded by such diversity within my home stay and project
  • Ability to travel/explore
Cons
  • Not having much program information prior to arrival. Making donations harder
  • Challenging to prep food ahead for lunches

My Medical Experience with Maximo Nivel

I just finished my experience volunteering with Maximo Nivel at a clinic in Antigua, Guatemala. As a medical student, this was an incredibly enlightening experience that taught me a lot about the importance of global public health. The staff at Maximo Nivel were lovely and super helpful, and Antigua was a beautiful city to get to spend time. Overall, I would definitely recommend this programme to medical students and health professionals who are looking to gain experience in a global health setting.

Spanish Immersion

Maximo Nivel was SUCH a great experience to learn Spanish and have help around Cusco.

Their staff was friendly, always available, and willing to work with us to make a custom schedule that fit out families needs.

The teachers were native speakers and the curriculum was super helpful.

Beyond Spanish classes, the internet connection was great and the staff helped us find our way around Cusco!

Our two kids started with no Spanish experience and learned so much throughout the program. Their teacher was so fun and patient.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
We travelled with our two kids (ages 10
And 12) and took Spanish as a part of our homeschool curriculum. I’d highly recommend this program for any families looking to travel!
Pros
  • Native speaking teachers
  • Helpful staff
  • Great internet

Medical Campaign

We went to Peru for a medical campaign and had an amazing time! We helped almost 500 people in five days and got to experience the culture and people of Cusco. We went to five different towns and saw a bunch of different people from little kids to some old people that had worked really hard their whole life. I’m glad we got to help all these people. It was an eye opening experience being from America. I would like to thank Erica and Patrick especially for helping this go so smooth and helping us around the city.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was 100% Cuy or “Guinea Pig”. It was surprisingly pretty good.
Pros
  • Experience culture
  • The people
  • History
Cons
  • Seeing poverty

So glad I did it

This course has been so helpful. It was over 4 weeks and involved a lot of learning and teaching. The teacher in Guatemala, Wayne, was such an inspiration in the way that he taught us and the information that he gave us was very useful. His feedback after classes were encouraging, inspiring and helpful. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone interested in teaching English as a foreign language. The resources that we were given were of high quality and I learnt so much in the actual hands on teaching opportunities.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
It surprised me how close we, the students, became over the 4 weeks and how encouraging and supportive everyone was to each other.
Pros
  • Learnt helpful techniques
  • Gained classroom experience
  • Experienced the amazing Guatemalan culture

TEFL certification

The TEFL course at Maximo Nivel was fantastic, and I feel as though through completing it I have all the tools necessary to be a good English teacher. Though the course load is a bit heavy, the instructor Wayne made it digestible, and was overall an amazing teacher and an even better person. I can't say enough good things about Wayne, and I hope that if you decide to do the course you are fortunate enough to have him as your teacher as well, because he truly made the course as enjoyable as it was, and inspired us to teach.

What was your funniest moment?
The funniest moments were when the instructor would get us to read in different accents, which added a really fun element to otherwise boring material.
Pros
  • Teacher was amazing
  • Free salsa classes
  • Free cooking classes

Jungle Conservation

Spent two lovely weeks doing the Jungle Conservation program! Being in the Amazon truly is such a surreal experience and something I will value for the rest of my life. I definitely had moments where I felt out of my comfort zone, but the people at the volunteer site and Savannah from Máximo were amazing support throughout my time there.

The activities varied from day to day, including things like identifying different species, planting trees, clearing trails, and some construction work. Highly recommend!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Keep an open mind and be prepared for lots of swamps and mud! Also bring long sleeves, pants and bug repellent to help protect against the mosquitoes.

TEFL in Peru

This course was very well created and provides everything you need to begin and earn in teaching. The instructor was very approachable and was able to create a fun and enjoyable learning environment that encouraged us to do our best. Really enjoyed it.
The lessons and the experience gained are worth every penny, I feel much more confident in my ability to teach and prepare lessons now for a variety of language levels. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a change in pace or to add another string to their bow.

Family Mayan Cultural Immersion

My two daughters and I traveled to San Antonio Aguas Calientes to stay with a family for a week for the Mayan cultural immersion program. It was an enjoyable and touching experience. Although my daughters do not have Spanish language skills, they were able to connect and have fun with the kids. We had multiple opportunities to engage with the community during religious events. We visited during La Semana Santa, which was a great time to visit. We felt safe the entire visit. Our program was only one week and we wish we could have stayed longer.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Tiras de panza (tripe)
Pros
  • Meaningful engagement with community
