Belize Therapy Abroad Spring 2022

I had such an amazing experience on this study abroad trip. I appreciated Therapy Abroad's organization in regard to the food, excursions, and clients. It was great to have our food orders already in when we went to restaurants, and it was great to have the activities/excursions already on the schedule. The excursions were so much fun, and I learned so much from the experiences about Belize culture, history, and the natural environment. I also loved working with clients on this trip. I got great experience with screenings, evals, and therapy and learned valuable skills relating to cultural humility. The housing arrangements were great. Our room was spacious and had a beautiful view of the city and mountains from the balcony and bathroom window. Breakfast every morning was delicious, and there was a wide variety of options. Staff were super friendly and responsive. San Ignacio as a whole was a great location for this trip. We were in a good location for both fun activities and clients. Overall, I had an amazing time on this trip and would definitely recommend that others go!

Pros
  • Well-organized
  • Good balance of work and fun

ECU Therapy Abroad Belize

This trip was so much fun! I would recommend it to anyone. Not only did we have a great time, I learned so much - more than probably all of my 4 undergraduate semesters combined! The lessons learned and friendships made will last forever. I’ll never forget all the wonderful people we met in Belize. As an undergraduate student, it was the first time many of were able to get hands on clinical experience. It was great to do this under such wonderful supervisors who were so helpful and understanding. Everyone seemed so thankful for our help and I really felt like we made a difference in their lives - and I know they made a difference in ours!

Pros
  • Hands-on learning experience
  • Unique opportunities
  • Cultural Diversity

Belize 2022 Speech Therapy

This was one of the best trips I have been on! Each day was very organized and I felt extremely safe wherever we went. Therapy abroad does a great job organizing the daily activities we are able to experience. One of my favorites was the trip to go zip lining because it was challenging to get to the top but extremely rewarding on each line down. Our coordinators were extremely polite and respectful! Martha’s Guesthouse was a great place to stay. The experiences I had were one of a kind and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Awesome Experience! Highly recommend

My trip to Belize was so awesome! I had so much fun and learned so much from being hands-on. The trip was a good mix of working with clients and families, while still having fun! It was amazing to see the wide variety of cultures and people all mixing together. The food was incredible at all of the places we ate as well. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. If you want a chance to help individuals and families dealing with communication disorders then this is the trip for you.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Zip-lining was for sure a little scary but I just decided to send it and have fun with it.

Belize-2022

Belize was such an experience of a lifetime for me and my group! I enjoyed seeing different cultures and helping provide speech therapy services for those that needed it! My favorite part was working with one little girl that had autism and seeing how much she improved from the last time therapy abroad had seen her. There was a great balance between fun and providing services. I made several friends and now have a different aspect on life. It was so eye opening and I would definitely recommend for future groups! I am grateful I got to be a part of this and would go back anytime!

Speech-Language Pathology in Belize

My group had an amazing time providing Speech Therapy services to different patients in Belize. We had a chance to learn about their culture and the history of Belize. The set up of the program was excellent because everyday was geared for a new activity. Which in turn allowed team bonding to occur within our group. I enjoyed being able to incorporate new learning experiences throughout our excursions. Everyone was kind and welcoming. We got to eat a variety of new and fresh foods. I hope to go back someday and help as much as possible.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers would be to take in every moment. Sometimes our days would go by so fast, just remember to take the time to reflect at the end of the day.

Therapy Abroad - Speech

This was such an amazing trip! I truly felt like we made a difference in Belize. We were able to provide speech therapy in a variety of schools and connect with the community. The staff were always so helpful and the area was very safe! I felt very welcomed throughout the trip. This program had the perfect balance of hands on experience and exciting excursions! We were also able to fit in some fun little activities such as Zumba! I would 100% go on a trip like this again! It was so inspirational and I have learned so much.

I had the best experience studying abroad in Belize for 10 days. I was able to learn about the country and culture of Belize while also making memories of a lifetime. It was well planned out between having time for excursions and also having time to provide speech therapy services. It was also nice to have some downtime throughout the stay. I would recommend this trip to anyone willing to go out of their comfort zone to travel to a new place and provide a community support services they need. Studying in Belize was a unique experience that I will cherish forever.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried the soursop juice one night at dinner and liked it. It was said to be a cancer killing agent in Belize.

Graduate Study Abroad Experience

This is one of the best experiences I've had in a long time. As an older student with a family of my own, I wasn't too sure that I would fit in with a predominately undergraduate crowd. However, I got to experience an amazing country and culture while branching out my developing clinical (SLP) skills. The excursions were absolutely amazing, informative, gorgeous, and fun! The accommodations and extended staff are an absolute delight and have absolutely wonderful food. Internet access is available, but spotty at best. My only complaint would be the tempo of the schedule. There were certainly some overwhelming days after evaluations that I didn't know when I would be able to complete all of my report writing.

What was your funniest moment?
I really enjoyed rocking out on the bus to music with Mr. Tyrone!!!

I miss this place so much!

This was truly an amazing experience! The best part was definitely the people we met! You will build life long relationships with people in your field, and that is priceless. It was truly the bridge connecting the context we learned in school and what we will be doing everyday in our profession, plus a lot of other exciting activities like surfing, boat rides, hiking, cave exploring and many other things. We obtained plenty of hands-on experience that reassured me that this is where I want to be at. Everyone was so supportive, I learned more there in two weeks than what i learned for a whole year in school. I definitely feel like now I have an advantage over people who didn't get to have this experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring lots of sunblock and bug spray! If you are going to get experience in your field, review your notes, write down lots of questions and take advantage of the time to pick their brains. It's way too much info to cover in such a short amount of time but they definitely emphasize on whatever you are interested in learning more about. Voice your opinion, they are pretty open in making adjustments. It is pricey but worth it if you make the best of it. Start your day with the right attitude, be open to try new things and you'll have a blast!
