So FUN

The social aspects were amazing! We loved going around to the local restaurants, shops, and getting lots of beach time. The communication though for the program was a bit disorganized. A lot of plans for going to the schools were day of decisions. Navigating without a specific schedule was a little difficult but overall the experience was unforgettable. We had so much fun in the schools and being able to help such a wonderful community. I’ve learned so much on this trip and really enhanced my clinical skills.

Pros
  • Food
  • Safe
  • Cultural
Cons
  • Communication
  • Scheduling

Amazing experience

This was hands down the best experience of graduate school. Learning about the programs and needs on Providenciales, and getting to work with students of all support needs and backgrounds was a great learning experience and worth every minute. Being part of a collaborative team of classmates and professionals was fun and challenging, and we all left feeling like we made a real impact in the schools and for the SLP on the island. 10/10 would recommend, wish I could start grad school all over again and participate in a program with Therapy Abroad 2 more times!

Belize Spring Break

Therapy abroad in Belize was an amazing way to spend my spring break!! It provided so much hands on experience as well as some really fun excursions! Our therapy experience was in all age ranges giving us the opportunity to see different populations. I especially enjoyed visiting the adults at Octavia Waight. They were full of energy and were excited to tell us about their life in Belize. Everyone who guided us throughout the week was very nice and helpful. I would love to go back and do it all again!

Pros
  • Really fun excursions
  • Hands on experience
  • Amazing food

The trip of a lifetime!

The therapy abroad trip to Belize was one of my favorite trips I’ve ever been on! Being able to observe and help facilitate speech therapy services was an incredible opportunity! I’m so thankful I got to experience this trip with my cohort friends! Being able to participate in clinicals first hand is not something we can do in the U. S. My time at therapy abroad validated there is no other career path for me. I learned so many skills that I will definitely use in my future as a speech pathologist!

Pros
  • Getting to explore a new country while helping others
  • Making connections with the therapy abroad staff & supervisors
  • Bonding with my classmates
Cons
  • The trip went by too fast!

amazing trip

This was one of the best trips I've been on. It was a perfect mixture of learning and fun. We worked in preschools and did clinical work for half of the trip and got to enjoy the beauty of Belize for the other half of the trip. The supervisors on our trip were very knowledgeable and I learned so much from them, which will be useful in my future. I loved learning about Belize's culture and the country itself. It was a very enriching experience that I am so grateful for. I definitely recommend this program!

Graduate student

Therapy abroad took care of everything! We had delicious food from start to finish and they set up wonderful culturally enhancing experiences. We also got to Zipline and snorkel, two items that were on my bucket list! The staff was supportive and we got to know them personally. Jaime Vega was there with us along the way and provided her delicious sweets! Aside from the food and support, I felt like I gained critical clinical experiences and learned first hand why it's important to be a culturally competent clinician. I met wonderful people and felt right at home in Belize. I would do this again in a heartbeat!

Pros
  • Cultural experiences

My Therapy Abroad experience- CMSD Belize 2023

This trip was a trip of a lifetime! I had the opportunity to travel alongside 16 other students from my undergraduate program at UGA. I definitely recommend getting a group together & going with people from your school! It made for a great adventure for all of us that I’m sure we’ll talk about until we graduate! & it helped we all at least knew of each other. We did a 7-day program over our schools spring break. We packed so much into 7 days but it was so fun! We had a great mix of both work and fun activities! We were able to do screenings in preschools and were accompanied by 2 wonderful SLP supervisors that Therapy Abroad found and placed with our group. The SLPs were so knowledgeable and very relevant in the field of Speech Pathology. I learned SO much from them, especially since both of them had two different areas of expertise within the field. We were immersed into the culture of Belize and were able to learn a lot about the country from our interactions with the locals there. Therapy abroad did a great job of giving us plenty of exposure to the culture in the areas of Belize we visited. One of the days we did a walking tour of San Ignacio led by a local guide and it was eye opening and very informative. We also got to go to the Maya ruins which was so cool!!! Also the food was delicious!!! Overall, I had a great experience and would recommend this program to anyone seeking adventure and some hands on experience in the field of Speech Pathology!!!

Pros
  • Raised cultural competency
  • Networking opportunity/ mentorship from great SLP supervisors!
  • Hands on experience in Speech Pathology!!
Cons
  • I can’t speak for attending this trip without people you already know, all I know is that I had a blast with the 16 other people from my classes at UGA! I think it was SO fun and memorable because of the people I had alongside with me!

This was an awesome trip!

There was a lot packed into the one week we went to Belize. It was a beautiful country with lots for us to do and amazing experiences. There was great food, great hotel rooms/cabins, and beautiful scenery. Group flights made traveling easy and it nice to pay everything up front so we didn’t have to worry about anything while on the trip. This trip was a good mixture of educational experience, vacation, and fun. One thing that really stood out to me was how nice and accommodating everyone was in Belize, especially at the hotels we stayed in.

Pros
  • The housing was very nice
  • Great, unique experiences
  • Traveling

Belize 2023

This was definitely one of the most amazing and memorable experiences I've ever had. The Therapy Abroad staff were extremely knowledgeable and offered a great deal of support throughout the entire trip. We were able to complete many clinical experiences, including screenings, evaluations, and therapy sessions and work with a wide range of clients. We also were able to have many adventurous and cultural experiences, like visiting the Mayan cultural center and Mayan ruins and going ziplining and snorkeling. I learned so much about the culture in Belize and had an amazing time interacting with the different communities. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I will be forever grateful that I was able to be a part of it. I learned so many new things and gained a great deal of confidence as a clinician. The housing was very clean and safe, and all of the staff members we interacted with were extremely accommodating and welcoming. I'm going to remember this trip for the rest of my life and take all of the skills I learned with me as I continue my clinical experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed every single day of the trip, and I would tell anyone who has the opportunity to go that it is so worth it. I already want to go back!

Pros
  • We were able to participate in a wide range of clinical experiences.
  • We learned so much about the culture and participated in many cultural immersion experiences.
  • The staff and all of the people we met in Belize were extremely kind and wonderful to interact with.

Already miss it

I can not express how amazing this experience was. From traveling all over the country to getting to know locals, to the delicious meals and so much more, I miss it already. The people we met and the opportunities we were given, have provided me with an education that you can't study for. Being exposed to another culture has been a great way to continue being culturally humble. The Therapy Abroad employees were there for us for everything. They taught us so much about Belize and the amazing culture they have there.
