Belize pre-OT/PT Review

I had so much fun on this trip! Loved how everyday involved some new adventures and getting to see multiple parts of Belize. Both of the chaperones were so helpful and knowledgeable on the occupational and physical therapy fields, and helped me understand more about the career path I want to take. Also very thankful for our tour guide, who was incredibly helpful and taught me so much about Belize. I only wish we received even more experience/hours working at the camp and observing OT/PT evaluations

HPU PT Service Trip

We had an absolutely amazing experience with Therapy Abroad. They were well organized and the guides were very knowledgeable. Ms. Patty and Ms. D helped us organize and carry out two very successful clinics over 4 days. Wilson and Roberto became part of our family. We won’t forget this experience and the students learned so much. The food was amazing and we learned a ton about the culture of Belize and their people. TEC and Hode’s were great places to stay and so welcoming. We went cave tubing and to learn how chocolate is made as our excursions.

Trip of a Lifetime

This trip was amazing! From the second I stepped off the plane, I was welcomed. Our driver, Tyrone, offered a helping hand and a gracious smile. Ms. Patty was helpful throughout our entire time with Therapy Abroad. It was always ensured that we were not hungry or thirsty. If we needed anything, it was easily delivered. We leaned a lot from the kids we worked with and from the locals in Belize. I’m happy with all the excursions that were offered to us, and I hope that I can return in the future!!

July 2025 Belize

Belmopan and Caye Kauker have been such an amazing experience both educationally and personally. I enjoyed helping the community and learning about the culture across all areas. I love how diversity is truly embraced and celebrated here across generations. I learned a lot about documentation here and was able to observe speech evaluations on children from the area. I loved seeing this and learning professionally but more than that it was so fulfilling to see how much the families appreciated the help that is so often taken for granted in more developed areas.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I swam with stingrays!
Pros

  • Friendly community
  • Lots of activities

Belize Therapy Abroad Trip

Therapy Abroad's trip to Belize was nothing short of amazing! From the moment we landed, it was clear that this trip would be life-changing. Belize, with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people, captured my heart and broadened my perspective in ways I never anticipated. Our time at Tykes Camp in Belmopan was particularly impactful. This camp, dedicated to providing support and care for children with special needs, was an eye-opening experience. The kids we worked with were incredibly sweet, each with their own unique personality. It was genuinely hard to leave them at the end of our stay. During our time at the camp, we engaged in a variety of activities. We played countless games filled with laughter and excitement. We created a supportive environment where the kids could feel safe and valued. Beyond the games, we also conducted evaluations to assess the children's progress and identify areas where they might need additional support. This hands-on experience provided invaluable insight into the challenges of providing care in a resource-limited setting. The most rewarding aspect of our time at Tykes Camp was the one-on-one time we spent with each child. Whether it was helping with an evaluation, reading a story, or simply listening, these moments left a lasting impression. After our time in Belmopan, we traveled to Caye Caulker by water taxi. Caye Caulker is a beautiful island with a laid-back, Caribbean vibe. The island's stunning beauty and exciting activities provided a welcome contrast to the more structured environment of Tykes Camp. We had an absolute blast exploring the island and its surrounding waters. One of the overall highlights was cave tubing, where we traveled around the intricate rock formations and the serene darkness of the caves. Snorkeling was another unforgettable experience. The crystal-clear waters were filled with colorful fish and vibrant coral reefs. Getting up close and personal with stingrays was also thrilling and awe-inspiring. Throughout our adventure, we were fortunate to have the guidance and support of Tyrone and Ms. Patty, two incredible individuals who went above and beyond to make our trip special. Their knowledge, passion, and genuine care for the community shone through in everything they did. They not only facilitated our activities but also shared their insights into Belizean culture and history, enriching our experience in countless ways. Overall, Therapy Abroad's trip to Belize was an extraordinary journey that touched my heart and broadened my horizons. The experience at Tykes Camp was deeply impactful, and the adventures in Caye Caulker were unforgettable. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this life-changing experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Definitely stay for longer than 8 days! We wished we had more time on Caye Caulker.

Belize Study Abroad 2025

This experience has been so beneficial to me as I not only got to become immersed in Belizean culture and work with children who are in need of speech services, but I got to explore the beautiful country. I have never traveled outside of the U.S. before and this was a great first international trip for me. I became close with my peers, advisors, and outstanding tour guide. I feel so grateful as I have learned so much and can’t wait to apply my wider range of Belizean culture back at home. I feel more prepared to enter the field of Speech Language Pathology

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking thing I did was let a sting ray brush past me. It was scary to me since I have never been so close to them, but I saw my friends doing it and realized it wasn’t too bad. It was a bonding moment where I sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed the beautiful country and animals with my friends.
Pros
  • Engaged with another culture
  • Applied my SLP skills
  • Tried new foods

Physical Therapy in San Ignacio

My time in Belize was very impactful! Providing care as a physical therapy student in Belize offers a profound impact, both personally and professionally. It fosters cultural humility, deepens clinical skills, and strengthens adaptability in resource-limited settings. We were able to address unmet rehabilitation needs, promote long-term health outcomes, and build meaningful relationships that transcend borders, leaving a lasting legacy of service and learning. I would love to be able to come back!!
