Take a Step Back

The trip as a whole was nothing short of incredible. The course dives deep into the core values of what it means to truly live deliberately and how to get the most out of the one life we have. The staff is made up of some the most soulful people you'll ever meet who gear their time towards helping and teaching those around them. I would reccomend to anyone looking to do something a little different, and to get away from daily distractions, especially if you're coming from a large city background.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was suprised with how much physical activity was involved in the course, very happy that i didn't fall out of my kayak

The Best Class I've Ever Taken

I've always had a love for nature and the outdoors. This was my first time visiting Maine and I fell in love with its beauty. The property itself is vast and gorgeous. Philip Francis was an amazing professor and it felt like everything we did was well thought out and tied directly back into what we were learning. I felt like I could really open up and be candid with emotions and what the class brought up for me because my classmates and teachers were all so supportive. It's been 4 years since my trip to Maine and I still talk about this class all the time because I found it so impactful.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
One day while we were there, Philip wanted to have us all canoe or kayak to a nearby island for class that day. My hand was one of the only ones who raised when asked who had never done either before. Thankfully, one of my fellow classmates was an eagle scout and offered to canoe with me. He taught me everything he knew about steering, paddling, getting in/out of the boat, etc. Two days later, I was in a kayak by myself paddling through the river. It was amazing to feel supported by my fellow classmates and definitely a confident boost to be able to go out in a solo kayak.

Learning to Live the Good Life

As a student who grew up in the hustle and bustle of New York City, it was great to get away and learn in the natural beauty of Maine.

Each day was filled with great readings, hands on experiences, and thoughtful conversations that helped me open my eyes to what it means to live a good life.

I know that all sounds kind of vague, but part of the course is learning to participate instead of anticipate! You are in incredibly good hands with the Francis family and their friends and you will certainly feel very welcomed throughout your stay.

By the end of my time in the course, I definitely learned how to live the good life and how to continue living that good life back in my city home. I also walked away with many life long friends and incredible memories! So if you’re considering taking this course, do it, you won’t regret it.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Best advice for future travelers: participate don’t anticipate!

The Good Life in Georgetown Maine

The time I had, and the people I met during this course, I will not soon forget. The life experience and kindness of everyone involved in the Good Life course is inspiring. If you want to read philosophy next to the ocean, do yoga on a platform in the trees, and learn from amazing people, you should look no further. This course was always exciting and always provided new experiences. It gave me the chance to get away for a moment and think about what it means to have a "good life". The course provided me with experiences to draw from to help me build a good life for myself.

The Good Life

Through UMaine Farmington, I spent a week before the semester started in Georgetown, ME with 11 other students. We were introduced to different ideas, themes, and readings about the good life. We also focused on the importance of connecting with nature, whether it be walking barefoot or kayaking. In a place as beautiful as Georgetown, it was easy to pause and reflect at any given moment or connect with the environment around us. Unlike other courses I've taken, this program has shown me the importance of an open mind, provided meaningful information, and has given me a new mindset on various aspects of my life. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to take this course, as it is clear it has proven to be life-changing.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The experience you'll have in Georgetown is life-changing, so don't hesitate on this opportunity! If you keep an open mind and are willing to reflect on various aspects of yourself, you can learn so much from this course. To add to that, you quickly make lasting connections with the other students in your group. It's worth it!

I loved the Good Life Program!

The Good Life program with Professor Francis and his staff was one of the most impactful and memorable experiences I have ever participated in. The location and accommodations are breathtaking; the program promotes new ways of thinking and seeing the world; the staff are brilliant, supportive, positive and fun individuals; And you’ll make new friends and participate in fun, educational and engaging experiences! I wish I could go back every year! If you are someone who enjoys the outdoors, loves the water, looks forward to new experiences, enjoys intellectually stimulating conversations and would appreciate spending time in beautiful Maine, this is the program for you!

What would you improve about this program?
If anything could be improved in this program it would be opening it up to more students who are not affiliated with Professor Francis’ home colleges, because it is such a great experience and more people should have the opportunity to participate in it! (Which is now possible since he is offering The Good Life through this organization!)

The Good Life

It’s been years since I first took this class. So many things in my life has changed, but the things I got out of this class are stable. It is more than just a class. Life lessons, experiences, and friends. I still talk about this class to almost everyone I know, and try to get people to read the books we studied. I still go back to what I learned here when I’m in distress. The professor and his family are some of the greatest people I’ve ever met, and the lessons that you learn here are ones that they all live by. It’s one thing to learn about something by reading it, but seeing how it can actually be applied to life really helped it sink in. Do yourself a favor and take part in this.

What was your funniest moment?
There are far too many to chose from, but the first one that comes to mind is when a classmate ST rated to brag about how he should be the leader of our kayaking expedition since he’s so skilled, then immediately flipped over in his kayak

The Good Life led me to the Great Life

Taking the Maine Course with the Francis family was one of the most unforgettable experiences. As someone who is well-traveled, I would easily say Maine beat any other location I have gone. From stepping foot in Georgetown I became one of the newest members of the Francis family. Staying in the cabins (or even a YURT) with strangers (who became family) was the first thing to push me from my comfort zone. Throughout the two weeks following, I was constantly encouraged to go out of my comfort zone, explore new places, and expand on thoughts I never had. My favorites memories range from: kayaking to group meetings on abandoned islands, ZIPLINGIN to yoga class, swimming in FREEZING water, clamming, and of course the famous lobster bake. Also, not to mention that everywhere you go you will be blown away by the BEAUTY that Maine has to offer!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be prepared to go out of your comfort zone. When PF says something- JUST DO IT! Listening to that crazy man will be a total new adventure in your life.

The class that brings the learning outdoors

I attended the Good Life in 2015, during its debut year. The experience I gained there made a great impact on me, and I continue to learn from the lessons I gained there. If you are looking for a great time to enjoy the outdoors and to enjoy learning about philosophy, I recommend this program. As for the food, there is nothing as satisfying as having a lobster from Maine, in Maine. As part of the program in 2015, our group got to try the lobsters that had been caught the same day. In addition to eating great food, we explored the waters and visited various islands around Bath, Maine. Again, I would recommend anyone to take this course.

Learn to Reflect and Discover Beauty

This program is life-changing. I've participated in the Good Life course for two summers, truly some of the best experiences I've ever had. The first time I was there, I learned to reflect on the beauty of the good life. Two years later, I returned to learn what it means to shower the world with gifts of beauty in the good life.
This will be a trip where you will have the opportunity to explore the wild, the beauty, the wonder, the solitude, the silence, the self-reliance, and the simplicity in the Good Life. To read wonderful works by Henry David Thoreau and Annie Dillard, sitting in the garden, by the sea, on a tree. Doing all that, while bonding with a beautiful group of classmates and friends. Grateful for all the life-long friends that I have met over this trip, grateful for the Good Life.
