Awesome four weeks abroad!

I absolutely loved my time in Mexico on Iguana Abroad. Learning Spanish has been a long-term goal and this trip really helped me to achieve my aim in the most fun and unforgettable way. My Spanish went from around an A1 level at the start of the program to a strong B1/B2 by the end (including a week of independent travel in Mexico after the program ended). My conversational Spanish improved so much during the four week duration of the program and I can now happily say that I can speak with any Spanish-speaking person in any situation - even if they have a difficult accent or are speaking quickly. I majored in zoology and one of the reasons that I chose Iguana Abroad originally was because I was interested in the diversity of Mexico and the different species and ecosystems that you can find there. If, like me, you are interested in wildlife I would highly recommend this program because we saw so many incredible animals on the trip, including axolotls which are an awesome species only found in central Mexico, as well as monkeys! Aside from the nature I really loved the cultural aspects of the Iguana Abroad program – visiting small Mexican towns and Aztec sites, as well as modern Mexican cities – as well as the social aspect of the trip. Overall I would definitely recommend Iguana Abroad to anyone who wants to step outside their comfort zone and really experience a new culture, as well as learning Spanish and having a great summer!

¡México Mágico!

“México Mágico” is a phrase you hear a lot in Mexico (it means “Magical Mexico”) and in my experience this was the perfect way to describe my trip to Mexico on Iguana Abroad! Mexico really is a magical place and Iguana Abroad was a perfect program to make it happen. Some of the locations we visited on the program were absolutely stunning (Las Estacas and Tepoztán were my two favorites - as well as Cuernavaca), the Spanish immersion was perfect and I learned so much about Mexico and Mexican culture while on the program. We were even lucky enough to visit the village of Yautepec when there was a Chinelo festival happening (a local tradition in this part of Mexico) which was an incredible experience! I loved every moment on Iguana Abroad and I hope I can make it back one day!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I think I would have to say the Chinelo festival in Yautepec just because it was so unexpected! Me and a few guys from the program took an Uber to Yautepec on a Sunday just because we wanted to see the local market - but when we arrived there was a huge chinelo festival happening in the town which was awesome! (If you search for "chinelos" on Google you will see what I mean). The whole town was wearing these incredible colorful traditional costumes and were dancing through the streets - there was music, fireworks, food stalls and so many friendly, welcoming people - the whole day was so unexpected and ultimately amazing! :)
Pros
  • Great sociable program
  • Perfect Spanish course for boosting your confidence with spoken Spanish
  • Awesome locations for the weekend trips
Cons
  • Not that I can think of

Spanish language and adventure

I’m so happy I decided to choose Iguana Abroad for my trip to Mexico. Iguana Abroad make the experience really special right from the start by picking you up at the airport and helping you settle into Mexican life so you feel at home from the very first day. The Spanish classes were incredible and they really help you to speak confidently (they also teach you Mexican slang and other aspects of authentic Mexican Spanish). We also visited loads of amazing places when we were on the program, such as national parks, archaeological sites and awesome Mexican villages, which were all really interesting! You can also learn to cook Mexican food on the program which I enjoyed a lot because the food here is incredible. It was sad to have to say goodbye at the end because I met some amazing people on the program, as well as making some unforgettable memories!

Couldn’t be happier with the course

I met some absolutely amazing people on the course, finally got a good grip on Spanish - and Mexico was definitely a better place to learn Spanish than in Spain! I've actually been to two Spanish courses in Spain before (Valencia and Seville) and was almost going to go to one in Madrid, before a friend mentioned IA to me. Definitely really glad I ended up coming to Mexico in the end and taking the Iguana Abroad course. Everything in the course had been thought about and ran really smoothly - can't think of any problems on the course. Mexico was also a really perfect place to take a course like this as well.

Trip of a lifetime

Iguana Abroad was a really valuable experience for me because it gave me the opportunity to not only learn Spanish but also live in Mexico independently, which has been a dream of mine since I was young. The course was really well structured and the teachers give you a lot of opportunity to practice your Spanish outside the classroom in real-life situations. The course is also a really good way to meet other travellers – after the course ended I even went solo-travelling with some of the girls I met on the program which was an amazing experience! Overall a highly-recommended and worthwhile program for anyone who is interested Latin American culture or learning Spanish.

A perfect immersion course

Iguana Abroad is a wonderful, well-organized Spanish immersion program located in a unique and fun part of Mexico. The program was diverse and exciting, but also safe and well-structured – with just the right balance between Spanish classes and free time to explore the area, speak to locals and spend time with friends from the program. The staff on the program were really helpful and professional and they do everything they can to make your experience special – this includes being available day and night for anything you may need and being there to solve any problems you may have. The weekend trips were amazing and the cultural immersion events were a great part of the course (my program included trips Las Estacas and Tepoztlán as well as a Mexican cookery course and salsa dancing). A 10/10 Spanish immersion experience

The Only Way I Ever Learnt Spanish

Iguana Abroad was the first time in my life I realised that I can actually, truly, learn Spanish. I had been “learning” Spanish on and off for about 8 years before I took the course - always coming to dead ends and kicking myself for being an idiot. Every time the more I learnt, the more I felt I was never going to get anywhere, honestly felt like I was moving backwards - that I didn’t have a “language brain”.

The 4 week course I took with Iguana Abroad was a huge eye opener for me. One thing I can say after the IA course - to learn a language, you honestly can’t just sit in front of a language app on your smartphone and tap the screen.

I could write a much longer review, about the whole course, and would be delighted to do an interview or something as well. Really what I want to say here is that if you really, genuinely, feel you can’t learn Spanish - then take this course - you’ll see what I mean.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Without any doubt whatsoever, it was going on a date with a girl who talked no English, and talking entirely in Spanish (and maybe a little bit of Spanglish at points as well haha). Doing this kind of thing for about 100 reasons is something I thought I'd never ever ever be able to do. That genuinely surprised me.
Pros
  • Great guys who run and join the course
  • The only way I have ever learnt Spanish
  • Some of the best memories of my life
Cons
  • I miss all the friends I made in Mexico
  • That I didn't come to an earlier course!

Iguana Abroad

I thought Iguana Abroad was an amazing opportunity to learn Spanish and live in Mexico while also meeting some awesome people! The trip from start to finish was well organized and the communication was always clear. The accommodation was comfortable and in a good area, with good wifi and amenities, close to restaurants – it was also close to an amazing Mexican market that sells all sorts of tropical fruits, vegetables and other ingredients for cooking homecooked meals. The Spanish teaching was in a nice building with awesome teachers and quite close to the accommodation. The other people on the trip were amazing and really friendly – I have made friends on this course that I will have for life. A perfect course – with amazing people.

Pros
  • You will learn a lot of Spanish
  • Sociable course
  • Lots of immersion events such as Mexican cookery class and salsa class

An unforgettable experience

I absolutely loved my time in Mexico on Iguana Abroad. The group dynamics on the trip were really special and I made friends with travellers from all around the world. I also met Mexicans from all over the country, from all walks of life, who shared their life stories and taught me about their country and their culture. Learning Spanish definitely opens up so many doors to new people and places and helps you to experience so much that you would never be able to do if you never learnt the language. If you haven’t signed up yet don’t hesitate – you won’t regret it.

Pros
  • Location
  • Accommodation included in cost
  • Weekend trips and immersion events included

A dream come true - finally talking Spanish!!!

Awesome course that totally made mine and my boyfriends year. Me and my boyfriend (who was on the course with me) started 2023 saying again that we would finally learn Spanish before the year ended (because this was now like the third year we were saying this!!) … and honestly, we can both actually say we finally can both speak Spanish really well now, and we are so happy to say that!! We both totally agree that without coming to Mexico and making that decision (and it took us a while to make) to sign up and travel to Mexico instead of signing up to another app, then we would probably be ending this year still not speaking Spanish.. again! We had an amazing experience with everything that happened on Iguana Abroad, making lots of new friends, we saw some really incredible parts of Mexico that we never knew existed, ate some of the best food of our lives and are ending this year a lot better and happier for the experience! We have recommended this course to all of our friends and families!

What was your funniest moment?
Seeing Shaun and Phoebe dancing that cumbia we learned at the salsa class to the reggaeton karaoke thing!! I'm still laughing about that!
Pros
  • Great memories and friends
  • Speaking really good Spanish!
  • Amazing food
Cons
  • There was a heat wave for like 2-3 days during the course which was pretty intense
