Meeting extraordinary people

While I expected to meet extraordinary elephants and rhinos on this project, I did not expect to meet some of the most extraordinary people I've ever met.

Madame Matsika so impressed me with her dedication to the children and their opportunities, to the preservation of the Shona culture and to the encouragement of the principles of sustainability. She is the personification of goodness and wisdom.

Judy Travers' principles of ethical treatment of people and animals are astounding. Once can see her influence throughout Imire - every single animal you meet, whether it is a dog, horse or rhino, clearly expects to be treated with kindness and respect. And the same goes for people.

What would you improve about this program?
I have two minor complaints.
One is wifi access. I should not have been told there was reliable wifi access. I would have not created expectations at home of regular contact.

amazing family experience

My family and I spent 2 weeks on this project in August and had a really amazing experience. We were made to feel part of the community from the very start - with neighbours turning up at the door with homemade cakes and papayas from their garden and sharing delicious teas in the bush. We spent the mornings teaching in the local school which was very rewarding. The local children were great fun and eager to learn, in some classes we had to be quite inventive in overcoming language barriers but this added to the fun. Our children (13 & 14) played lots of sport with them which was very popular!
The afternoons were mainly spent helping on the conservancy. We learnt a range of skills - the african way - from fixing water pipes, spotting poachers snares, monitoring african dogs hole to tracking rhinos on foot. We saw all the big 5 and much, much more besides. The whole time we were looked after by an amazing local guide and we learnt so much. The conservancy is in the middle of the african bush and very, very beautiful. We will definitely be back!

What would you improve about this program?
A little more structure on the conservancy side. We had a ball but we would have liked to feel we had been a bit more useful! As we were the first on the program, I am sure this will be fine tuned. This project has the potential to be truely brilliant!

Totally fabulous mind blowing experience!

We spent 2 weeks at Imire on the horse riding and conservation project and had the best experience ever. We went in October so not too hot (30 degrees peaks in the day but much cooler at night) and perfect for early morning rides and beautiful sunsets. As horse riding volunteers we rode every morning nice and early then joined the rest of the volunteers for the daily activities after that. This meant we got the best of both worlds as we got the riding but but didn't miss out on any rhino or elephant or other activities either. The riding part was phenomenal. The horses are beautifully looked after and adored by Judy Travers and her family and helpers. Judy took us out every morning and we spent some days counting game and others (trying) to help the cattle ranchers (they are brill so didn't really need any help but it was a lot of fun to do!). We did different sections of the reserve everyday so we saw so much more than we would have in the truck. We were spotting all the newborns and checking for signs of poaching or any animals looking unwell. We saw zebra, giraffe, warthogs, wildebeest, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and so many species of antelope it was a phenomenal way to view the reserve and be a part of Imire and what it stands for! The riding program is well structured but you need to be flexible as 'plans change' on a fairly regular basis. You also need to be a fairly good rider as the terrain is a mix of tracks, bush whacking, off roading and a fair few rock/water crossings. The horses are sure footed and brilliant but it helps them if the riders are too! We spent 3-4hrs in the saddle a day and thoroughly enjoyed it but don't mistake this for a full riding holiday as the horses need breaks and the riding volunteers then join in the rhino conservation groups for the majority of the day. We had a totally amazing time and I would recommend Imire to anyone and everyone looking for a volunteering holiday of a lifetime.

What would you improve about this program?
The entire trip was incredible and I wouldn't change a thing. We were told the riding project was only for 2 weeks at a time so it might be worth clarifying this before you book. We'd have certainly stayed longer if the riding program was longer than 2 weeks. Also check the kit list with your booking. It's worth it to be comfortable for 4 hrs at a time in the saddle!

Deeply satisfying

You will never have a better, closer experience with the big animals of Africa—every second day I rode an elephant! And I fed rhinos in the morning. Plus zebras, giraffes, warthogs, wildebeests, gazelles, elands, hyenas... Showering in a bamboo stall, with solar heated water, watching the mist rise off the pond (that you can swim and fish in and watch the hippo) outside the house where the volunteers stay. Mending fences, tracking animals, topping up and relocating feeders, building paddocks, cleaning up elephant poop—the fun doesn't stop. All of the staff are fabulous and deeply committed. And the volunteers come from around the world (from three continents when I was there) bringing diverse cultures to a shared commitment.

What would you improve about this program?
I actually wanted to work harder, at the dullest menial jobs. I like to take a job to completion, though that is hard with thousands of hectares of land and hundreds of tasks. But they do keep the work varied and having fun is just part of the work ethic.

Amazing doesn't cover it!

I spent 2 weeks at Imire on this project. It was AMAZING to say the least. The animals are amazing, the people are amazing, the house and surroundings are amazing, the project and efficiency of the programme are amazing.
I have done a few projects before and Imire is at the top of the list!! You are part of the family as soon as you arrive. You get straight into the project and the flexibility especially at weekends ensure that the project is tailored exactly to your needs.
AMAZING!!!!!

What would you improve about this program?
maybe some more evening ride outs, or camp outs? We didn't have electricity for a good few days and although you understand that it's Africa, it did mean that the evenings felt very long.
Although I understand this could also depend on the group of vols your with.
