Summer in Italy

Atlantis gave me the opportunity to feel important in the hospital, as if I truly belong there. They gave me the opportunity to stand close by a surgeon during a procedure, sit next to doctors performing exams, and be taught how to read MRI scans. They also allowed me to travel on my own if I so choosed to. I was able to experience the Italian culture in more than one city while I was abroad. Because of Atlantis I can now say that I have Lifelong friendships with other Atlantis Fellows and even Doctors! Atlantis really helped me in knowing that Medicine was right for me!

Atlantis Review: Portugal (closest country to Spain)

This Organization does a Phenomenal job of organizing, prepping and equipping you with everything you need to attend their programs. I personally enjoyed the location I chose in Portugal. The Country was beautiful the Site manager I had was fantastic, and everyone that chose the same location as me were amazing. The Shadowing that I got there was incredible and honestly nothing like you would ever experience in the US. All of the doctors that I shadowed with were extremely helpful and were very willing to work with us with the langage barrier. There is plenty of free time to actually explore and experience the country and the weekends are times to travel. I got to Travel to Lisbon, the capital, and spend time there exploring. I'm so happy with this program and would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to shadow and want to travel.

Atlantis Fellowship Program

My experience was unique as it allowed me to be exposed to medicine. Specifically, I was able to shadow doctors in various departments such as dermatology and neurology for up to 20 hours per week in a beautiful location, namely, Sant Cugat, Spain. In addition, I was able to network tremendously, learn more about myself, and the Spanish culture. Being in Spain with a group was amazing because it allowed me to connect with others that hold similar interests regarding the medical field. Even after the trip, I keep in contact with most of them through the use of social media.

What would you improve about this program?
Communicating location information correctly.

The staff in the hospital were loving and accepting and had the will to teach. The site managers were amazing, kind and fun! Paola and Joaquin Are the Best! There was always something new to learn and that what made it spontaneous and exciting! Im definitely going to do it again! SIGN ME UP

My Experience in Hungary

In November of 2017, I saw a flyer for the Atlantis Fellowship and was immediately intrigued. For the longest time, I had been searching for a summer opportunity to combine my two passions: medicine and traveling. Ultimately, I chose this fellowship because it offered an unparalleled opportunity to travel abroad, learn about the health care system in another country, interact with and learn from physicians, and solidify my desire of pursuing a career in medicine. I cannot explain the excitement I felt when I learned we would be given the opportunity to witness two autopsies. There are no words to describe the appreciation I felt for mothers upon witnessing three natural births and one C-section. And there is no textbook that can explain the ins and outs of public health care as well as an individual who has been given first hand experience. I recommend this to anyone and everyone who is interested in anything related to healthcare, who wants to push their comfort zones, and is hungry for a life-changing opportunity.

What would you improve about this program?
I would just recommend bettering communication between hospital staff, site managers, and students, as well as informing fellows of possible excursions beforehand so as to prepare them for what to pack.

Wonderful Medical Fellowship in Ecuador

Ever since the age of 8, I have aspired to become a neonatal doctor. After my first year of university, Atlantis offered me my first step in the direction of achieving this dream by shadowing physicians in all specialties, including neonatal, pediatrics, radiology, surgery, and many more, in a hospital in Ecuador. This unique program aligns perfectly with my plans of studying medical anthropology and has only further peaked my interest in the medical field.

What an Experience

The Atlantis program was by far one of the most amazing experiences I have ever been apart of. Visiting another country and standing side by side to the lead surgeons truly reminded me why I love medicine. I never would have gotten the same shadowing experience here in the United States. My favorite memories from my trip was the surgeries I got to see standing a foot away and the small trips we went on as a group!

Atlantis Fellowship: Lisbon. Best Experience of my Life.

I had been abroad previously and was looking to study again, but also obtain clinical experience. The Atlantis Fellowship not only provided me that, but exceeded my expectations in ways I did not believe possible. This program is unlike any other and I truly believe I will be a better doctor in the future because of it. There is something so special about being able to completely immerse yourself in another culture while also experiencing another country's healthcare system. I learned so much about Portugal's healthcare system and was able to compare it to my own, which is vital when going into the field of medicine. In addition, the fellowship's ability to let its fellows shadow many different specialities gave me a better insight and understanding of what kind of doctor I want to become. I am so incredible thankful for this opportunity and highly recommend Lisbon! Lisbon was so safe, fun, and honestly I have a hard time putting into words just how unique and beautiful the city was. The three weeks went by so fast, I could have stayed there for eight! I made lasting friendships with not only the other fellows, but the staff as well! All of the site managers in Lisbon were absolutely lovely and so helpful. I will remember this experience for my entire life, I highly recommend the Atlantis Fellowship!

Fellowship in Rome, Italy

This past summer I went abroad and experienced a once in a lifetime fellowship in Rome, Italy. For four weeks I witnessed many different procedures in the operating room, and worked right by side the surgeons and nurses. Each week we got assigned to a new specialty and physician to learn and grow from. I was able to expand my network in the medical world, as well as meeting new friends I know I will stay in contact with for life. Being in Europe, studying their medical techniques was an opportunity I never thought I would have. I really appreciated the constant support the doctors gave each fellow. They encouraged us to be proactive and ask questions because they were just as eager to teach as we were to learn. I came back from my time in Rome knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my career and I also came back having more knowledge of the European medical system. This experience was more than I could have ever asked for.

What would you improve about this program?
This program really does do well with working side by side with the doctors in the hospital and making sure that is the best aspect of the fellowship, but I do think the housing could have been upgraded for us and the site managers being a little less overbearing.

Atlantis/Shadowing Doctors 20+hrs a week

This program allowed me to experience the average day of a doctor in a different country. I had the experience of shadowing doctors in Trieste, Italy. I was able to gain more knowledge of how our health care system and day of a doctor is so different when compared to other countries. I am a Pre-Med student and want to become a medic in the Military, so when I had the opportunity to go work overseas I knew this would be something fit for me. I was able to work in all different kinds of departments in the hospital, that gave me a opportunity to experience how life will be when I reach my career goal. Not only did I learn so much of how hospitals work in other countries, but I also had the opportunity to learn a lot about different cultures in other countries. I was able to build amazing relations with my doctors and fellows throughout the three weeks I was in Italy.

What would you improve about this program?
I don't really have any complaints, everyone in this program was extremely helpful and made sure we were always taken care of. I would have only asked for more volunteering hours, because I enjoyed being in the hospital so much.
