I randomly stumbled upon Sol online, as my University does not promote this particular program. I am so blessed that I did because overall I was extremely impressed. I would highly recommend the Sol Education Abroad program to anyone. The communication between the program administration and myself before, during, and after the program was very useful as I felt very prepared and comfortable. The activities the program planned helped me to immerse myself into the culture very well and learn all kinds of things. I do wish though when we were within our group that we were forced to speak Spanish to each other more. A lot more english was conversed than I expected, but overall I was satisfied with my learning of Spanish. I had the time of my life and grew so much as a person. I made lifelong friends that I will cherish dearly! Please give Sol a shot as you get so much for your money! :)

What would you improve about this program?

I wish they would have forced us to only speak in Spanish. Within our group we spoke more English than I expected.

Argentina is an amazing country. The excursions were incredible. Unfortunately, the trip was poorly organized which added additional stress and drama to nearly every event. We also had to argue with the company as they attempted to cancel our excursions. The other group traveling at the same time did have more than one cancelled.

This company sells itself well, but be wary of what you are actually getting. If you choose Sol Abroad be prepared to be involved in the planning of each activity to keep things going and maintain student safety.

Bottom Line: Argentina is an incredible country, but this is not the company to travel with.

This student did our program back in 2009 when we had a different director. Our program has improved a lot since then. For example, this director continued to get reviews of being disorganized. At the end of summer 2010 we hired our current director, Raul de la Mano, and have gotten very positive feedback ever since. Please contact us for references. The student was also upset because we would not reimburse her for an unplanned excursion (non-Sol) to Córdoba that some of the students did once the program began. She did an academic year with us and I think the review was written after her first semester because after her second semester she wrote us "Please let me know if there is ever anything else I can do for you guys. I love to rave about my SOL experience whenever I can."

Why did you choose this program?

I found this program through my home University and once I requested information, in the blink of an eye I was all set to go to Argentina! This program made the “hard” part bearable. This program not only prepared me for my class, homestay, and travel, but also aided in any questions or concerns I had. If I weren’t a senior in college, I would deffiantely study abroad through this program again!

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

My program provider guided me through the entire process and made each step as easy as it could be! Of course there were forms I had to complete, however, my program provider made sure I had my paper work in a timely manner, helped in finding me a homestay, scheduled my classes, and even had events planned for when I arrived!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

One piece of advice I’d offer someone going on my program is to stay as long as possible. Two weeks sounded like a long time until I was getting ready to pack up and leave Argentina. I definitely wish I would’ve stayed and immersed myself in the Argentinian culture a lot longer. I made the best of my time while I was there, but over the two weeks I came to appreciate the culture and the people so much it was hard to leave!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average day in my two week program was always a fun day! After waking up and eating breakfast with my host Mom, I would go to class for a few hours. After the class the day was left open for me to explore! I made sure to use my time wisely and have something different planned everyday of the week. In just two weeks I was able to learn and see so much of Buenos Aires!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I’m not afraid of much, but traveling abroad all alone definitely brings out the nerves. I was not afraid of not knowing anyone or not even being able to speak the language well, but I was afraid that I wouldn’t get to see all that I wanted to see. In two weeks I saw more than I thought I would and what I didn’t see, well I plan to go back.

Can you tell us your overall experience going to this program?

This was not a vacation for me but a truly enriching journey and it is something I am so grateful to have experienced. I was able to meet people who are different then me and speak a different language than me but who I came to love. I was able to experience a culture very different from my own and appreciate the way others live. I learned so much in just two weeks about Argentina but I learned so much more about myself. I learned that there is more to life than just living life. In just two weeks a part of myself changed. I see the world a completely different way than before and it definitely made me feel a way only a person who has experienced this journey could truly feel. A piece of my heart is forever with Argentina and the people I met along the way.

What is your favorite travel memory?

I met one of my best friends while she was studying abroad at my university in the U.S. and she invited me to her wedding in her home country of China. I had the opportunity to attend two weddings - one in her hometown and one in her husband's hometown - and travel with them! It was some of the best food I've ever had and I will forever be thankful for their incredible hospitality.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I have grown so much so quickly with SOL. It started even when I was a student on the program, gaining confidence in myself and my abilities. Since working with SOL, I've learned how to balance all the different responsibilities we juggle here in the office. I've learned how to be flexible and adapt to all the different situations that come with the industry.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Some of the best stories I've heard from return students is the stories of when they get to go back again. We've had many students who end up going back after their program to visit with their homestay and local friends. Their excitement to return to a place that was once new and to now go back and feel like it's home is so inspiring.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would choose our program in Buenos Aires, Argentina! As a student, I attended our Costa Rica and Spain programs so I am familiar with those locations, and I visited our Mexico program last summer. Argentina is last on my list and I would love to visit a city as incredible and as big as Buenos Aires!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

SOL is unique because everyone in our office has studied abroad with the program and knows what it's like to be a student abroad. I'm always proud to say that I'm a two-time SOL alumni. I chose this program because it was the most affordable option I could find and SOL makes study abroad accessible to students who may not have had that opportunity otherwise.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Believing in what you do and why you do it. We firmly believe in our mission statement of treating students the way we wanted to be treated when we studied abroad. Each member of our team, from our staff here in the U.S, to our onsite staff, to our local homestays, is dedicated to helping students have an amazing experience abroad. The reason I came back to work for SOL was because I wanted to help students experience study abroad the way my directors helped me during my time abroad.
