About Program

The HSK is a worldwide recognized qualification to prove one’s level of Mandarin Language proficiency. Go Abroad China offers preparatory courses to international Mandarin Chinese learners to help them leave China with a valuable qualification in Chinese. My name is Malin Stifler. I'm from Orlando Florida and I joined Go Abroad China's high school Chinese language immersion program for two weeks.

I do it with my sister and we're in Beijing staying with a host family. Every Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 12:00, we attend language classes and we take two classes. The first one is easier
and then the second one is a bit harder but it's still really fun. I've been learning a lot from both of the classes and my Mandarin is improved a lot. It was really great to be immersed in the culture and in the language to learn so much and overall it was just a really great experience in the classes. We made a lot of new friends and we met so many people from so many different countries. The first class I think it really helped me with some like basic vocabulary and basic grammar and then the second class even though it's a bit harder it helped my comprehension a lot. I learned at a much quicker pace than I would have in the US. It was just a super great opportunity.

The school was only a few subway stops away and there's subway so fast here so it was not a problem taking it at all. The area that the school was very international so it was really cool to see all the different restaurants and see so many foreigners from different places. They're just cool to interact with everybody.

In the afternoons we would come home or we would go sightseeing. We went to the temple of heaven in the Forbidden City and so many other cool places like temples and places. Because Beijing is so big and has so many different places to visit and on the weekends we would hang out with the host family and the I always talk to the little girl and the mom.

We got to visit a lot of like daily Beijing life stuff like the supermarket and like the mall which are both really big and totally different from what we have in America. Being immersed here is just such an amazing experience and if I had the chance I would definitely do it again. I definitely take language classes again so I can meet all of these so cool like people there were so many different places.

Overall is just so cool being in Beijing and I had a really great time being here even though it was only for two weeks. I've learned so much I wish I could stay longer but overall the trip was really great.

I already knew a little bit about the HSK qualification. I have been learning Chinese in the US for a few years and decided to go to finally go to China.
During my research there were a few options I read about but in the end picked GAC after lots of comparisons. They organised for me to go to a small language school and I was there for 3 months. Learning Chinese away from my school in the US was totally different; the pace and intensity was higher in China, and definitely I was able to pass HSK level 3. The exam was so intense, it had a section for grammar, listing, reading and writing characters. I had expected this because I did lots of practise questions from an HSK preparation textbook.

I had so much fun when I as there; there was a lady from GAC that helped me get to my school, she always emailed me when they organised events and outings and I met a lot of other people.I think it went very well getting everything organised by Go Abroad China, they helped me a lot.

What would you improve about this program?

I was hoping to get a good discount.

What position do you hold at Go Abroad China? What has been your career path so far?

Wendy: I am one of the program coordinators at Go Abroad China, and a lot of my responsibilities fall under first introducing the client to our organization and the programs we offer, then ensuring that we map out and deliver the best arrangement possible for the client to experience China. My career has so far involved a lot of people-oriented projects, and I am glad to have joined the life/study abroad industry.

What does the future hold for Go Abroad China – any exciting new programs to share?

Wendy: Looking forward, of course the first thing is to keep improving ourselves and learning more about what our clients need and like since they are the focal point of what we do as a company. For the immediate future, we continue to develop to the fullest potential our study tour and language immersion programs. Furthermore, we will be introducing some new exciting programs like teaching in China and look forward to welcoming some new clients to come on board.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Wendy: I now better understand the significance of knowing and being able to relate to the client’s background, current situation and their needs, after all one of the values we operate under is mutual understanding and reliability. I think trying to always keep in mind that the client comes first, putting in the effort, showing appreciation and respect for my position as the mouthpiece of the company towards our clients has helped me a lot in my job. And on a more personal note, I have gained a lot more appreciation for foreigners coming to China to pursue their dreams, to tour, advance their career paths and overcome challenges. It makes me happy to know that I am part of an organization that facilitates this.

What changes would you make to the study abroad industry?

Wendy: The whole study abroad idea is really great and I support it. The industry of course is getting more and more competitive because the quantity of international traveling continues to be favorable. I think the way to go now is to improve the quality of the programs all throughout because the demand is still there. I think all across the board, there should be constant revision of programs on offer; they need to be revitalized constantly keeping in mind the changing needs of the client and the market trends.

What does your home country’s culture value that is taught in your program?

Wendy: What stands out the most is forging cultural bridges between East and West. I believe that cultural understanding and reaching out for the other person is very important when trying to make a connection. Our organization supports this both on professional terms and at a personal level, that is why our programs always strife to integrate language, culture and activities for a well-rounded, authentic experience. At level ground when you observe the Chinese people, most remain welcoming to foreigners and still hope to form friendships.
