Of Misunderstandings and Pants

Dec 8, 2016

When I first arrived at the homestay in London, my host-father offered to carry one of my bags up the stairs. He lifted it up and exclaimed that it was heavy. I replied, "Oh, well, it's all my pants." He hesitated for a moment looking confused and a little concerned, and then suddenly it dawned on me. In the UK, "pants" means "underwear." For a moment there, he had thought I had brought an entire bag full of pounds of underwear! I was so embarrassed, but we had a good laugh afterwards.

What would you improve about this program?
It should be easier to apply. There needs to be a place on the OSU campus that can be accessed when we need help, and clearer guidelines for what needs to be done in order to apply. There also needs to be more confirmation on whether or not we are doing things correctly. We should receive a list of the all of the people who are relevant for us to know in order to have a smooth application experience. (Different kinds of advisors, consultants, program coordinators, directors, etc. I lost track of how many different people I had to contact and what I had said to each of them).

Amanda Milburn

Program
Gender, Race, and Class in London
Job Title
Site Director, London, UK
Amanda Milburn is responsible for all programs at the GEO London Center. A native ‘Brit’, Amanda is half-Scottish, grew up in England, and lived in Wales for almost a decade before moving to London. Her academic background is in nineteenth-century British history, with a focus on gender, class, and national identity. Amanda particularly enjoys helping students to navigate British society and culture.

What is your favorite travel memory?

While I have been lucky enough to travel around Europe and the world, some of my best 'travel' memories are right here in the UK. From hiking in Gwaelod-y-Garth, Wales, to exploring the historic walled city of York, there's something for everyone.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I've lived in London for years and still haven't experienced even half of what the city has to offer, so I'd have to opt for one of my own programs. We use the city as the classroom, and I'd really enjoy the interactive academic study we offer.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

We're a small team of three full-time staff and we're all passionate about study abroad and living and working in London. We get on really well, and you can tell we enjoy our jobs! Students have said that we present a friendly atmosphere, combined with a rigorous academic program, and that's how we like it.

We're also perfectly placed in the area of historic Bloomsbury, 15 minutes from the British Library, 10 minutes from the British Museum, and 2 minutes from Charles Dickens' House, in a beautiful grade II listed early Georgian townhouse.
