At the University of the South Pacific, you’ll join a diverse international student body and take courses in a wide range of subjects, all taught by local faculty who bring the region’s perspectives and priorities into the classroom. Outside of academics, you’ll connect with your new community through immersive experiences organized by the USP Student Association—like traditional ceremonies, local markets, and cultural nights—and explore the natural beauty of Fiji through outdoor adventures.

  • Fiji is known for its beautiful crystal clear lagoons, palm-lined beaches, and interesting landscapes.
  • Gain a unique perspective of the Pacific by taking courses with extensive excursions related to marine studies, tourism, geography, environmental science, and biology.
  • The 4-day orientation, known as O-Week, includes faculty-specific orientations, a campus tour, daily entertainment, academic workshops, and activities.

An unforgettable experience

Fiji is an excellent place to have new cultural experiences. In addition to the rich Fijian culture, the University of South Pacific has students from many different pacific island nations, and the cultural diversity is widely celebrated. If you love to snorkel, scuba dive, surf, or just spend time next to/in the ocean, Fiji will be the perfect place for you. I have so many unforgettable experiences with sharks, rays, and other tropical fish and animals. I will never forget snorkeling with nurse sharks for my 21st birthday.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice would be to talk to strangers and make friends. The people of Fiji are some of the friendliest I have ever met, and the connections I have made in this country are invaluable.
Pros
  • Very affordable cell phone coverage, housing, groceries, transportation, and general living costs.
  • Fresh coconuts available every day.
  • The University of South Pacific has many classes that can count towards your degree. I completed 3 marine biology classes while I was there.
Cons
  • There was one weekend where the city lost access to its waters sources, but we came up with creative solutions.
  • Standard of cleanliness is not the same as the United States in places like public restrooms.
  • Very warm, I personally enjoyed this, but some may complain about being very sweaty very often.

Fiji - The Scholar Games- Summer Program

AMAZING. This past summer I participated in the Fiji Scholar Games: an extraordinary opportunity to not only explore the stunning Pacific Islands, but also immerse myself in a thrilling challenge-based competition similar to Survivor!

Our team, Tivua, was crowned champion of the Scholar Games! We exhibited excellent teamwork, applied effective communication skills, and demonstrated adaptability throughout various mental and physical challenges. This unique competitive experience was enriched with the University of South Pacific’s course on Pacific Worlds. We spent much of our time diving deep into topics like Pacific cultural heritage and diversity of Pacific societies for sustainable development. Some specific issues we discussed were migration patterns, colonial and post-colonial contexts, Pacific understandings of cultural and natural heritage sources and conflict over these resources, and future challenges and opportunities in the region. This experience taught valuable life lessons while creating unforgettable memories and forming a tight-knit bond with native Fijians and other university students from across the United States. I'm immensely grateful for the support of my professors, teammates, and the vibrant Fijian community that made this experience possible.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We went stargazing and it was so beautiful and very emotional. Since Fiji is so far from light pollution, we were able to see the milky way so clearly with our naked eye. It was lifechanging.
Pros
  • Unique program- unlike any other study abroad experience out there
  • Very relaxed- since you're not rushing to visit a bunch of tourist attractions, you have time to just enjoy the natural beauty of Fiji.
  • The Fijian Sunsets are stunning.
Cons
  • Unless you pay for an island hopping trip, you stay on Mana Island basically the whole time. I enjoyed that aspect, but some people would not.
