Studying abroad as a freshman

CIEE has made being a freshman abroad extremely easy and very welcoming. A lot of organizations do not allow freshman to study abroad but CIEE has been great at keeping me feel safe and secure when being truly away from my parents for the first time. They have also been very helpful when trying to figure out my new chapter of life. With the day/overnight trips they were extremely helpful when trying to connect with others in my program and others that were also studying in milan. Overall I’ve had a wonderful experience in Milan with CIEE.

CIEE Milan

Participating in CIEE’s Global Internship program in Milan was truly an unforgettable experience. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to live and work abroad, gaining not only international exposure but also invaluable professional skills through my internship. Being immersed in a new culture while working in a dynamic and global city like Milan allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Milan was the perfect location, known as the capital of fashion, business, and innovation, it offered a vibrant and inspiring environment to learn and thrive. The city's blend of history, art, and modernity created the perfect backdrop for exploration and discovery. Every day brought a new adventure, whether it was navigating the bustling streets, visiting iconic landmarks like the Duomo, or enjoying authentic Italian cuisine.

My time in Milan taught me the importance of adaptability, cultural awareness, and professionalism in a global context. I was challenged to step out of my comfort zone, communicate across language barriers, and contribute meaningfully to my host organization. These experiences not only enhanced my resume but also helped shape my perspective on the kind of global career I want to pursue.

I look back on my time in Milan with so much appreciation. From the friendships I formed to the skills I developed and the memories I made, this internship experience was truly life-changing. I’m so thankful to CIEE for making this possible and would encourage anyone considering international work or study to take that leap it is so worth it.

CIEE Abroad Internship- Milan, Italy

I enjoyed my experience. The program directors were very helpful, and the internship was an amazing experience. Traveling on the weekends was very accessible. I would say it is very hot in Italy, so it is good to be aware when packing. Public transportation is very easy, but you have to get the hang of it first. You can save a lot of money on public transportation by purchasing a monthly ATM card, highly recommend. I enjoyed being a part of the program to meet others from many different places. We also had group trips or events we could attend to get to know each other. When working in my internship, my supervisor was very understanding and helpful. We had several classes throughout the week with the CIEE directors. I didn't find all of them helpful, and they were sometimes long. Orientation was insightful, but it was directly after my 12-hour commute to Europe, so I was very tired and felt they couldve spaced out the process.

What would you improve about this program?
I would improve the location where we stay. More central or in a nicer part of town.
Pros
  • Meeting other people
  • Traveling to other places
Cons
  • Location of living
  • Hot Weather

I loved studying abroad with CIEE in Milan. Milan was a fantastic homebase to travel around and explore the urban lifestyle. CIEE staff was extremely supportive throughout the experience. Group excursions were a really fun way to explore the Italian culture and make new connections with other students. There was a lot of opportunities to experience all different aspects of Italian culture, and learning to work in another culture was extremely enriching. I would definitely recommend this program!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would make a list of all of the different neighborhoods and opportunities Milan has to offer and make sure to check out each area. There is so much diversity in this city and a lot of experiences to explore.

  • Great place to travel around from
  • Food and Culture experiences

CIEE Milan Internship Program

Spending my summer in Milan as part of a global internship program was one of the most impactful and exciting experiences of my college journey so far. I interned at Stecca 3, a community-focused organization that works with different groups across Milan to promote cultural, educational, and environmental initiatives. Through my role, I got to contribute in multiple ways—interviewing people from diverse backgrounds, helping plan activities for kids, and assisting with translating content into English for their website and social media platforms. It was meaningful work that challenged me to think creatively, adapt quickly, and communicate across cultures.

This internship gave me a better understanding of what it’s like to work in a nonprofit setting and confirmed my interest in a career where I can help people and make a positive impact. I developed important skills like time management, teamwork, and public speaking—all in a different country and language, which made it even more rewarding. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone in the best way possible. I also learned how to work independently and manage projects with minimal guidance, which gave me a new level of confidence in my abilities.

Outside of the internship, living in Milan was an adventure in itself. Milan is a vibrant, fast-paced city with incredible architecture, fashion, and history around every corner. I loved exploring the Duomo, walking through Brera, grabbing coffee in quiet courtyards, and having aperitivo in Navigli at sunset. I even picked up some Italian just from being immersed in the culture. On weekends, I had the chance to travel to other parts of Italy, including Lake Como, Florence, Venice, and Cinque Terre. Each place had its own unique charm and gave me a deeper appreciation for Italian culture and history.

This summer was not just about professional growth—it was about personal growth too. Living abroad helped me become more independent, open-minded, and adaptable. It taught me how to balance work and life in a new environment, how to navigate public transportation in a foreign city, and how to stay present and make the most of every moment. I met amazing people from around the world, made lifelong memories, and came home feeling more inspired and motivated than ever.

I’m so grateful I took this leap and spent my summer in Milan. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that helped shape not only my resume, but also my perspective on the world and what I want for my future. I would recommend a global internship to anyone looking to gain valuable experience while immersing themselves in a new culture—you won’t regret it.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was escargot. I loved the flavor but not the texture. I’m glad I tried it but I don’t think i’ll ever eat it again. I was really surprised I even tried it though.
Pros
  • Traveling on weekends
  • internship experience
  • meeting new people
Cons
  • figuring out public transportation
  • heat

Great experience abroad!

I had a great experience abroad, the housing was wonderful and close to transportation. There were many activities and trips to nearby cities involved throughout the program especially during Fashion week. I liked the emails sent to us every week with activities we could sign up for and notifications of anything going on it definitely helped me know what was going on. It was easy to meet other students as we were all together upon arrival and in the same housing. The ciee staff were always really sweet and helpful I definitely enjoyed my time and wish I stayed longer!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay longer and enjoyed the city longer rather than always traveling elsewhere
Pros
  • Housing
  • Activities
  • Staff

Excellent time abroad through CIEE

CIEE is a wonderful organization as a study abroad resource. While attending the Milan study abroad program, the staff was resourceful in messaging and information. They hold an introductory meeting and cover all your questions the first day abroad. They were there for me whenever I had additional questions or sought recommendations. Their internship program was the one I completed, and they did a good job of reviewing my interests and aspirations and pairing me with an appropriate employer. The outings they hosted were fun and were mostly engaging. As it was the first semester they’ve held in Milan, they did a pretty great job, and still have much room to improve.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Enjoy the first week abroad. It’s a honeymoon phase filled with delight, innocence, and pure bliss. Easily my favorite week of my summer.
