About Program
Puerto Rico is an island territory of the United States with its own rich blend of Indigenous, Spanish, African, and North American influences. Due to its unique political history and relationship with the U.S., it is an ideal location for students interested in Caribbean Studies, Afro-Latinx Studies, Diaspora Studies, Postcolonialism Studies, and Spanish. Students may study in either San Juan or Mayagüez.
Through the School in Puerto Rico, students take courses at one of Puerto Rico’s top universities, taught in Spanish, in a wide variety of academic disciplines. Additionally, students take a Middlebury-organized course called Writing for Linguistic and Cultural Competence.
Designed for undergraduate students from any college or university, the program provides an immersive environment to advance language proficiency and cultural understanding. Students adhere to the Middlebury Language Pledge® on the program, showing a commitment to linguistic and cultural immersion.
