Study Abroad in Glasgow, Scotland with WorldStrides

Why did you decide to study abroad with ISA in Glasgow, Scotland?

Carolyn: I chose to study abroad with ISA at the University of Strathclyde for several reasons. While I knew I wanted to study abroad in Scotland, what really drew me to Glasgow was its prolific music scene. I wanted to experience the city that had inspired so many of my favorite bands, and the University of Strathclyde was located in the heart of the city.

In terms of what the EuroLearn had to offer, I found that they provided a much more personal and customizable experience than other agencies offered. The program afforded me as much independence as I was comfortable with, and I always had personal
support when I needed it – especially in dire situations.

I also really appreciated their Bridging Cultures orientation in London that took place about a month after I had arrived in Scotland. In addition to some fun activities and outings, it was perfectly coordinated to allow me to form my own impressions about Scotland before discussing them with other students who were having similar experiences.

What made your study abroad experience unique and special?

Carolyn: Glasgow has a certain dark grittiness about it, but if you choose to embrace it and take what it has to offer you, you’ll soon realize that it’s full of hidden treasures and wonderful, down-to-earth people that give the city a kind of humble beauty. Strathclyde also gave me the opportunity to join in the international community. As the largest city in Scotland, Glasgow is extremely multicultural, and a large part of what gives the city its character is its diverse population.

My experience was unique because I wasn’t looking to be a tourist; I wanted to live like the locals, to eat their food and enjoy their music, and to experience what life was really like for a typical student in Scotland. Living in a small flat at the center of the city
was the perfect way to throw myself into the culture.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Carolyn: Choosing to study abroad in Scotland has been enormously beneficial to me in more ways than I can count. Not only has it challenged me to be more resourceful and confident, it has helped me to become much more independent and willing to take risks. Professionally, the experience and skillset that I developed while studying abroad has helped me acquire positions as a teaching assistant at a school for emotionally disturbed adolescents and more recently as a coordinator at a non-profit organization that helps arrange student exchanges and homestays. In this capacity, I can share my passion for travel and the study abroad experience with others.
