About Program

This 80-day Sea|mester follows the Coconut Milk Run from Fiji to Bali and teaches real seamanship through daily practice, but students seeking a shorter experience can join for either the first or second half (40 days from Fiji to Palau & Palau to Bali).

Beginning in Fiji, settle into watch rotations, and learn sail handling, navigation basics, and safe vessel routines on a working schooner. The route includes remote archipelagos and high-biodiversity waters, with fieldwork that links marine science to what you see underwater and from the deck.

Stops may include Palau, Raja Ampat, and Komodo, where reef systems, currents, and local conservation offer new case studies. Long bluewater legs build confidence as you stand helm, plot positions, and communicate clearly with your team. By Bali, you have earned academic credit, advanced practical skills, and a crew that knows how you contribute at sea. (Route length about 5,800 nautical miles with up to 9 credits available.)

Sea|mester was everything I hoped for and more

I've been wanting to do a Sea|mester program since I was a sophomore in high school, and this experience has surpassed all my expectations. I learned so much about sailing, the ocean, and myself while visiting some of the most unique locations on earth. I loved getting to know people from all different areas and backgrounds and enjoyed how the staff facilitated our group development. Overall, I am so grateful I got to be a part of this summer's program and experience everything Argo and Sea|mester had to offer.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when I was cooking in the galley (boat kitchen) while we were underway. The waves were pulling the boat in every direction and we were sliding into each other and every counter. I decided to sit on top of the fridge to steady myself in between stirring our curry. When I tried to hop off the fridge to tend to the food, the bottom of my shorts got stuck on the fridge latch and I was stuck hanging upside down, swinging back and forth. My fellow chefs curled over laughing before they released me from my air jail and we spent the rest of our meal prep giggling about the experience.
Pros
  • Meeting people from different backgrounds
  • Exploring unique and remote locations
  • Learning to sail and dive alongside college courses
What other participants should know
  • More mentally challenging than typical study abroad
  • Can be isolating being on a boat in the middle of the ocean
  • Inconsistent sleep schedule

Absolutely Amazing Experience

My experience with SeaMester was absolutely amazing. I met so many great people and saw so many amazing things. However one part of the trip that I do think should be changed is the whale shark experience. The company SeaMester had us use was super unethical. They practiced shark provisioning and allowed people to get really close and even touch the shark. I would hope that in the future, SeaMester would choose to maybe skip the activity or find a more ethical way to see them. I along with other people on Argo were very uncomfortable about the whole situation. Other than that I had a great time!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. A lot of the things that I did on my trip that were most enjoyable were the activities that I just learned how to do or pushed myself to do. Take advantage of all opportunities on board to learn.
Pros
  • Meeting new friends
  • Diving
  • Seeing amazing animals
What other participants should know
  • Limited food
  • Little privacy

Palau to Bali 2026

Such an amazing experience and I would do it all over again in an instant. Met some amazing people and truly had the experience of a lifetime. I cannot recommend this program more. It can be hard to be so disconnected from the outside world but when you embrace it you find how amazing it can be. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable but I don’t think anyone grows as a person without stepping outside their comfort zone and taking risks. This was my first time ever on a boat let alone sailing, and it was hard sometimes but I was ready for the challenge and welcomed the hardships I knew would come along with such an amazing experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take it all in and stay in the moment. It went by in the blink of an eye and before I knew it I was stepping off Argo for the last time. Never take any moment for granted, it can be difficult sometimes but it’s all part of the journey.
Pros
  • Learning to sail
  • Much scuba diving
  • Meeting likeminded people

My time on Sea|Mester

This was the most life changing experience ever. I did the 40 days of their trip from Fiji->Palau and I learned the most amazing things and made lifelong friends.
Personally, I have so much fun learning new things and the whole experience for me was new and exciting. I learnt how to sail and gained 3 sailing related certifications, I also learned how to scuba dive and got my advanced open water, and lastly I got my EFR certification.
The staff was all very supportive and fun to be around. I felt like I could have a genuine conversation with every one of them. Also doing a program like this you are bound to find people who like the same stuff as you because who is really signing up to sail if they don’t want to.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Try everything. Your watch team leader is putting on the generator? Go watch them and learn how. You don’t know how to lead a sail raise? Actively seek it out and try to learn. Choice between diving or not diving? Do the dive. You don’t know if this is your last time doing stuff like this so never say no to anything and actively seek out the things you wanna learn.
Pros
  • The friendships I have made
  • The classes were fun
What other participants should know
  • How hot the boat would get a times

Just do it!

It’s been just over a year since I boarded Argo in Port Denarau Fiji, and it has taken me all of that time to sit down and write this review. My advice just do it! There will be few things cooler you do in your life than one of these trips even if you spend the rest of your life chasing epicness. The ocean is spectacular, the experience is one of a kind, the opportunity is yours for the taking. Sailing from Fiji to Bali allowed me to see and do things I never would have suspected possible and allowed me to dream bigger!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Learning how to scuba dive was definitely a challenge for me but I cannot be more grateful that I learned to overcome that fear and get through the trainings because I now have an immeasurable love for the ocean.

I couldn’t have done it though without the encouragement from the other people on the boat, both students and staff. People who told me there was more beyond the trainings, which there was, so so much more. And my friends who were just as nervous who committed to learning to do this with me and together we talked ourselves through it!

Yet another aspect that changed my life and the adventures I will go on in my future.
Pros
  • Reefs
  • Remote ocean access
  • Sailing
What other participants should know
  • Seasickness
  • Food - could be touch and go
  • HOMEWORK!

Best Summer Yet

I sailed with Seamester for 3 months from Fiji to Palau and Indonesia. I joined the boat with no sailing or scuba experience and ended up a rescue diver with multiple sailing certifications. All the staff and students were so friendly and the 22 strangers that I met on day one turned into a tight-knit family that was impossible to say goodbye to on day 80. The program is definitely challenging and will push you out of your comfort zone with long-passage and some rough nights but I now look back on those as some of my fondest memories. The boat transforms into a home with people who were put together by chance and now know some of the strangest stories about each other's lives. Nothing can ever beat the feeling of jumping off the boat to swim with manta rays just feet from our floating home or back-rolling off the dinghies to scuba dive across the equator or helming through 360-degree sunrises and sunsets in the middle of the ocean with some of your closest friends. This experience teaches you to be comfortable going outside your comfort zone and to always say yes, it may just turn into one of the best memories of your life.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Seeing an oceanic manta ray in the middle of the ocean hundreds of miles from land while doing an efr course.
Pros
  • Learning to scuba dive and sail
  • Traveling to extremely remote places
  • Getting comfortable going outside your comfort zone

Dreams to Reality

Seamester was a trip that exceeded all of my expectations. I had an opportunity to visit places some people may never see in a lifetime and I got to make countless memories with amazing new people. I grew a bond with not only the students but also the staff that could never be replaced. We got to witness beautiful sites such as healthy coral, marine life, and beautiful islands. I gained a great knowledge of sailing which is one thing I had always dreamed of doing. Everyday I wish I could go back and relive it all just once more.

Pros
  • Seeing marine life and healthy coral
  • Learning how to sail
  • Getting out of your comfort zone
What other participants should know
  • No ice

Fiji to Palau

Sea|mester was a life changing experience! The most valuable aspect was the ability to grow your voice and gain confidence. I went into the program with a sufficient amount of confidence and wasn’t the type of person to raise my hand in class. As the program went on, I went outside my comfort zone as often as I could to grow my voice. I didn’t notice the increase in confidence until the student lead passage when I was Chief Mate and really utilized those skills and pushed myself even harder. For those moments, I’ll forever remember.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was participating in a Kava ceremony with the Fijian Navy. As well, we saw a large pod of sperm whales breach during our long passage to Palau. Once we reached our anchorage in Palau, the President of Palau and the US Ambassador joined us onboard for a tour of the boat and provided us some information about the islands! This trip really upgraded our two truths and a lie game.
