About Program

Seated in the center of Spain, the capital city is not only the political and cultural center of the country, but an important player in global economics. Despite its present-day status, much of Madrid’s historic past remains beautifully preserved in its landmarks, museums, and architecture.

A huge variety of tapas bars, dance shows, concerts, outdoor parks, soccer matches, ethnic neighborhoods, and contemporary theater and cinema make it a lively place to live and learn.

Courses are available in English and Spanish.

Summer block 2

This experience has been the best 6 weeks of my life. I’ve learned more about myself and the world. I enjoyed the classes I took since they are not what I normally take. I also enjoyed all the girls being in the apartment, it allowed for us to be closer to each other. I enjoyed how a lot of the learning was done in the classroom instead of outside work. I also enjoyed all the in class field trips where we saw in class material in real life while also exploring the city with someone who knows it well

What was your funniest moment?
Going to the art studio with class.
Pros
  • Meeting people from across the states
  • Having an apartment
  • School being close to city center
Cons
  • Variety of classes
  • No AC in apartment
  • Communication with one teacher

CIEE Experience

The past four months I have spent studying abroad in Madrid have been amazing. I have been able to travel to 10 countries and close to 20 different cities! The CIEE program allows you to have the freedom to travel and explore Europe. The staff is friendly and supports you through school work, outside activities, or any accommodations you may need. The school buildings are located in the center of the city which is a great way to get familiar with your new home base. The academic staff is very responsive and accommodating too.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I went paragliding in Interlaken, Switzerland. I would have never thought I would or could do this before coming abroad. It was an amazing experience that I will always remember!
Pros
  • Travel Experience
  • Learning new means of transportation
  • Time with friends

My Madrid CIEE Experience

I really enjoyed this program because of the teachers. They all had real-world experience, whether it was professional, personal, or academic, they brought their past learnings to the classroom, making learning really engaging. By learning straight from professionals in their respective class topics, I was able to make real-world applications and ask questions about things past the course material. They also took an active interest in seeing us engage with Spanish culture by giving us recommendations of places to travel, visit, eat, sightsee, enjoy, and more. They treated us like adults, not just students, which made the classroom experience very cohesive. They helped me enjoy Madrid a lot more.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Experience all there is to Spain. There are so many awesome smaller cities in the different regions of Spain that showcase so much culture. The regional differences of Spain make it so unique. I traveled a lot outside of Spain, but I wish I had made more trips within Spain because cities like Toledo, Seville, and Valencia were amazing.
Pros
  • Madrid is a good city to travel out of for relatively cheaper prices.
  • Great diversity of food, culture, and experiences within Madrid
  • Madrid is a great city to start getting accustomed to European culture if it's your first time.
Cons
  • Larger city meaning longer commute times, traffic, and tourism which can add up during tourist seaons.
  • Can be overwhelming because of how big of a city Madrid is, but I enjoy larger cities.

Best Semester!

This semester was so amazing! CIEE did a great job with the balance of academics and experiencing the city you live in. This is the perfect program to explore Madrid and Spain but also learn a lot while doing it! The classes were easy but enjoyable, and helped you learn a lot about Spain and Madrid. The dorms were clean and easy to socialize in with lots of common areas but single rooms so you had privacy. I made a lot of new friends from many different schools throughout the program who were all willing to socialize and do new things!

CIEE Global Flex

My experience was nothing short of amazing! The staff at CIEE are always willing to help, make sure students learn about the culture, and send weekly newsletters with events and information! Madrid is unlike any place before and I hope to be back very soon… I felt so safe here and loved getting to explore the city. I met lots of people through the program and even went on multiple trips with them! I practiced a new language and will continue to learn Spanish once I return home in hopes I can practice it more when I come back to spain. I highly recommend studying abroad with CIEE!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I think the most intimidating part is practicing Spanish when it is not your primary language. That said, everyone is so eager to help you and they appreciate you making the effort… overtime, I no longer felt nervous speaking Spanish!
Pros
  • Practiced a new language
  • Experienced a new culture
  • Felt very safe
Cons
  • The weather was cold in early months

My Time in Madrid

Studying abroad through CIEE was an outstanding learning and cultural experience. Being able to explore and navigate a new academic setting in an international country through the help of my program was beyond valuable. The support team made readily available to me and my other peers studying abroad was extremely useful in times of uncertainty and confusion. My study abroad experience, both in the classroom and out, was one of the best experiences in my entire life and the help of CIEE truly made this possible.

What was your funniest moment?
I would say my funnest moment during my time was when I visited Morocco through MadridCityLife Tour Group! I made lots of new friends and explored a vastly beautiful country.
Pros
  • Guidance
  • Opportunities
  • Organization
Cons
  • Confusion
  • Disconnection

Once in a lifetime opportunity

Studying with CIEE Madrid was like hitting the jackpot for my Spanish adventure! From the get-go, the program coordinators had our backs – they helped us blend into Madrid life, spilled the beans on the best local spots, and made us feel right at home.

The classes were a cool mix of learning in class and having excursions related to the class. For example; in my mass media class we went to a firm that revolutionised digital media in Spain. We also had the opportunity to travel within Spain which helped us learn. about the Spainsh history and how their culture developed throughout the years. CIEE Madrid made sure we didn't just study abroad; we lived it.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Having already some friends in Madrid I did not think that I would become so close to some of my friends I made in CIEE. Another thing that surprised me was how supportive the professors were: my professors went out of their way to help me outside the classes.
Pros
  • A lot to travel
  • New friend Circle
  • Explore different cultures and how people live on another side of the world
Cons
  • Dorms are far from institute

CIEE Madrid is amazing

Super fun classes with really engaging professors and lots of field trips. The center staff are really helpful too. Housing is clean and comfortable. The center is in a great location in the heart of the city at Puerta del Sol!
I love the Open Campus Block program because it let me study for one block (six weeks) before my regular school started (quarter system). But some people stayed longer or moved to another city. Such a unique and flexible program!
You will meet a lot of really cool people :)
