Excellent TEFL course

Completing an ESL course was a personal academic goal for me as a Teacher at an International School in my country. I, of course googled many courses and eventually decided on the OISE TEFL 150 hour course with Teach Away.
The units were well laid out, carefully structured and offered room for reflection and continuous personal assessments. Each unit contained modules each of which ended with a quiz. This was a bit daunting at first, but the opportunity to retake each quiz and the answers that accompanied each question added to improving my understanding of the content.
Being a mom, a teacher, my love for reading and attending to the usual unplanned surprises of life, I must admit I needed more than 150 hours.
The kind and amazing TEFL support staff were there to help with this, and any challenges encountered.
I will recommend this course to anyone venturing into teaching English as a second language or any teacher who wishes to refresh their skills.

TEFL Course

I would like to share some notes with the amazing experience I had with the TEFL course. I was a little apprehensive when it comes to online course as I prefer in class learning but I was surprised how convenient it turned out to be specially for someone who works full time. The course was well organized with different modules and the assignment were always so engaging, relevant and up to date. I really appreciated the feedback at the end of each assignment. Whenever I was stuck or required help the teach away team was always so quick to respond and so helpful.
I have learned so much not only when it comes to the course but also to everyday life and a lot of the teaching advices came handy when dealing with people .

Pros
  • The program was well organized in modules.
  • The assignments always had interesting questions
  • The response time of the Teach away team was amazing.
Cons
  • Sometimes the video were not loading, so had to skip them and check them on YouTube
  • Some documents were hard to download
  • Applications they suggested in the course like duolingo unfortunately are no longer free

Transformative TEFL Experience at the University of Toronto

Undertaking the TEFL course at the University of Toronto was nothing short of transformative. The program's well-structured curriculum, coupled with the expertise of the instructors, provided me with a comprehensive understanding of Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The dynamic and engaging teaching methods employed during the course not only equipped me with valuable pedagogical skills but also fostered a deep appreciation for cultural sensitivity in language teaching.

The University of Toronto's commitment to excellence was evident in the course materials, which were not only relevant but also reflective of the latest advancements in language education. The support and guidance from the instructors were instrumental in building my confidence as an aspiring English teacher.

I highly recommend the TEFL course at the University of Toronto to anyone seeking a top-tier program that not only imparts essential teaching skills but also cultivates a global perspective on language education. The experience was enriching, and I feel well-prepared to embark on a rewarding journey in the field of English language teaching.

TEFL

It was a good course. One of my friend recommended this course to me and I am glad she did. The course is designed in a way that can help and motivate teachers become useful and helpful for students. This course helped me understand that taking care of students and being kind to them is important that help students grow. A lot of important and useful skills, methods and techniques that teachers can apply were taught. Whenever I emailed to TEFL advisor and had any questions, the course advisor was very helpful and I always got a reply.

OISE University of Toronto TEFL course

My experience during the online course was excellent because of parts of teaching that I was not aware of. A lot of resources were suggested that would make life easier during a teaching abroad experience.

Comparing to what other TEFL programs people have taken and the knowledge I gained, I believe this one is the most complete and resourceful. Specially if you want to take teaching seriously and make a difference for the students while you teach.

I found that having a university backing up the program gave it that much prestige; I know some people say it doesn't matter where you get your TEFL from, but if the university is recognized overseas, that might just be the difference.

Quality Teaching

The course is linguistic basis and some prior knowledge in this area is an advantage. It offers some excellent teaching strategies, not only for teaching outside your immediate area or overseas, but also in any school environment from primary through to senior secondary. However, I found the blockage annoying. For example, when you have to wait to have the Journals marked and cannot move to the next module. The timed tests also posed a problem. For people like me who work full-time as a senior secondary teacher with 2 year 12 classes, a family to run and grand children. There was an occasion when I failed an exam because I had to attend a very young grand child's needs. There was also a time when I had planned to work on the course and your URL was down. This put me very behind in my schedule. You do need a very good internet connection to do the course and be able to be flexible with your time to complete the course. Overall a worth while course and for myself a very good review of what I had learnt awhile ago.

Excellent Training for Language Teachers

I have taken numerous online courses over the years, but I have no problem rating this course the best so far. The lessons were well organised and covered a lot of material (history of language, teaching theory, fundamentals of language/grammar). I wasn't expecting such an abundance of material, but know that it's necessary in order for language teachers to perform at their best in the classroom.

I liked the combination of visuals and audio components (PowerPoint, YouTube). The personal anecdotes that the professors and teachers shared helped me to understand the options that seasoned teachers have used when dealing with classroom issues and/or learning issues.

The reflections journals, quizzes and unit tests gave me the feedback I needed on an ongoing (and immediate) basis so that I could review and feel confident with my grasp of the materials.

I would strongly recommend this course for anyone who is interested in having a thorough knowledge base going into the classroom. It's a great confidence builder for new teachers.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I think it's important to learn as much as possible about the country, culture and people before you teach in a foreign country. I make a point of reading history, current events, literature etc. so that I have a better understanding and appreciation going in. This helps to enhance the experience for me and for the students.
