About Program

TEFL International Prague provides a 4-week TEFL course leading to an internationally recognized Certificate. Our program provides high-quality training and certification for people who want to work as teachers in Prague, in Europe or worldwide. It is externally moderated by TEFL International and validated through Lamar University (Texas, USA). Our centre is also accredited by EAQUALS, the leading professional association for language education.

As the training centre is closely associated with Threshold Training Associates, a large Prague language school, we can offer job guarantee to our successful trainees. Further more the trainees have the chance to meet our serving teachers in the staffroom and pick their brains about TEFL teaching and life in Czech Republic or other countries.

An excellent experience

The TEFL course was very intense, and the teachers are real fountains of knowledge. I had had some experience as a teacher before the course, but this TEFL course gave me an excellent opportunity to improve my skills through a detailed feedback and loads of great suggestions and interesting ideas. I can recommend it to everyone who wants to become a better teacher or start his/her career with a solid base.

Wonderful experience

The TEFL course through TEFL International, Prague was conducted professionally with a range of highly competent, experienced and helpful trainers. They were open and welcoming, offering their suggestions, advice and opinions whenever called upon. The course prepares you for life as an English teacher with both the advantages that comes with it as well as some of the disadvantages that you might have to be prepared to face if you really want to make it in this field (I'm saying this from the point of view of a non native speaker, these challenges are not faced by native speakers of English) If nothing, I'm glad that I got to learn so much whilst living in a city as beautiful as Prague. It was worth the experience.

A wonderful experience

This TEFL course was an amazing experience! The trainers were extremely knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us through the course with well planned materials and activities. They were dedicated to our success and truly prepared us for teaching English as a foreign language. They also made sure that we had time on the weekends for touring Prague. I had the time of my life and am very thankful for this TEFL certificate and the opportunities it will bring!

Quality Instruction in a Whimsical City.

Prague is a magical city and must be seen in person in order for you to absorb the wonderful energy, culture and history throughout the city. The staff at the school go above and beyond to provide a positive experience for you. From providing top quality tuition from very knowledgeable tutors to making sure you feel welcome and enjoy your stay in Prague. Your career development is their main concern and they will help you every step of the way! Would definitely recommend this course to a friend.

What would you improve about this program?
That a few more people would attend this amazing course as class was very small.

Professional Approach

I would higly recommend Language and Training s.r.o./ TEFL International Prague for its professional approach throughout the course. Extremely experienced, helpful and supportive teachers with different teaching styles (so much to learn from). Not just for the reasons already mentioned but also for the school´s surroundings, easy access and and its equipment I never regretted my decision to take the course there. Most important of all, the support and encouragement given not just by the tutors but all (friendly) staff resulted in building my confidence. Within a week of completing the course I have 3 offers from different language schools in Prague. Thank you all at Language and Training s.r.o. - I would not be as successful without your professional approach, teaching experience and more importantly genuine interest in my development.

Very quality course taught by real professionals and at the same very friendly people. They were always ready to help with any questions and materials even without asking for them:). I found very useful receiving a lot of advice when planning my teaching lessons and then getting from them very constructive feedback. I really enjoyed this course, because it made me feel more confident about my teaching and not only that.

Loved the small class size

I loved the small class size, relaxed atmosphere, individual attention. Teachers were very knowledgeable, very approachable. Sessions were highly efficiently taught. I enjoyed that we had to give feedback after teaching sessions, to discuss our strengths and weaknesses as new teachers. Loved the facilities, kitchen, coffee machine.

What would you improve about this program?
I really liked all our assignments but it wasn’t made clear up front when they were due, which was frustrating. Also every teacher had a slightly different set of expectations.

Shelby grew up in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas. She has always been an avid student and lover of cultures but only had limited excursions abroad during her childhood to places like Mexico, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands. Instead, she grew up experiencing travel from the backseat on long road-trips throughout the southern states of the USA. Her mother and grandmother, having traveled the world via the US Airforce, always encouraged her enthusiasm for world cultures and did their best to help her realize her travel dreams. At Southwestern University, Shelby studied world history along with psychology and politics with a hope of putting these skills to use in areas of conflict resolution and diplomacy. During her time in college she studied abroad in Istanbul, Turkey where she met many fascinating people, experienced international politics and conflict up-close, and tested the water for a life of living internationally. After graduating with high honors, Shelby looked into several different avenues to align her with her end goal of working towards international cooperation. It was during this time that she found a means to teach English in Prague and with only a month of preparation, she jumped on a plane and has been having the time of her life.

Why did you decide to get TEFL certified with TEFL International in Prague?

I was approached by United TEFL during my sophomore and senior years of college. Upon graduating, I knew that I wanted to travel either to Washington DC or internationally to pursue a future in international relations. When my attempts to find work in DC fell through, I pursued teaching as an alternative.

I looked mainly at three countries to teach in: the Czech Republic, Spain, and South Korea. I ended up choosing Prague because it was most available to me through United TEFL and because I knew the least about the region.

I feel the best way to learn about countries is to live there and experience life beyond the tourist front. Teaching English is the easiest way for me to initiate an international lifestyle. Although I didn’t foresee this path for myself, I am very happy because I’ve always been passionate about teaching and speaking educated English. Getting my certification here has been wonderfully rewarding already.

What made this teaching abroad experience unique and special?

For me this is my first step into the real world. I’ve always been a student only away from home for limited chunks of time. This experience is unique because I have the freedom of time and money that comes with living and working abroad. There’s a much greater sense of independence when you realize that you can survive in a foreign country on your own.

This trip is also special because I am learning everything from scratch. I came to Prague without any background knowledge of the history, culture, or language and I also did not know anybody else here. This experience is quite the adventure for me as I meet new people and constantly am learning new things.

I keep a blog and am helping to educate people back home about the Czech Republic. It’s very relaxing to not rush about like the tourists or carefully budget like students studying abroad. I have the time to experience Prague at my own pace and to learn the language and culture.

How has this experience impacted your future?

This experience has impacted my future in several different ways. It has always been my goal to go on the graduate school for International Relations and I have a strong interest in joining the US State Department as a Foreign Affairs Officer, but both of those paths are very competitive; very few people straight out of undergrad without international experience are accepted. As such, teaching abroad is not only a great way to build that needed international experience but it also is familiarizing me with languages and the process of learning them. I have to have foreign language skills for both paths.

In addition, getting this certification to teach has turned into a path of its own. Now that I’m working, I’m realizing that I could be very happy continuing as I am. If one or neither of my plans in the USA come to fruition, I am fully capable of staying abroad to teach. I’m very passionate about making a difference in the international community and promoting understanding and now I’m recognizing teaching as another way of doing just that.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering teaching / living abroad in Prague?

Do a test run. Moving abroad is not an easy thing to do. On top of getting your certification and getting hired by a language school you have to adapt to a completely different lifestyle, orient yourself in a vast, new city, navigate without the support of language, work on getting your visa and all other necessary paperwork, and making friends so that you don’t sit in your flat alone every evening.

Before committing to the money and time of getting certified to teach, take a long vacation or study abroad focusing specifically on building skills you’d need to start somewhere new. If you go abroad with friends, focus on making new friends. It’s surprising but your ability to find friends can make or break trip.
Give yourself the chance to experience the learning curve in a temporary setting before jumping into a (traditionally) year-long commitment. Not everyone is cut out to live in a foreign culture whether it’s because of language barriers, being shy, or not liking the food – it’s best to find out how you cope well before making plans to teach.

What is your favorite travel memory?

It is difficult to choose one memory as I love traveling and have a lot of favorites. I'll pick a recent one as it's fresh in my memory.

I spent some time working on an EU project in Cyprus last year and my friends and I took a few days off to travel to Paphos to enjoy the sea and beaches. On our way back from the beach we nearly missed our bus, but the bus driver spotted us!

The driver violently stopped the bus and allowed us to get on, however not without a price. The rest of the ride was nothing short of a comedy show, with the bus driver continuously making jokes and causing the whole bus to shake with laughter.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

As a TEFL program coordinator I have improved my organizational and multi-tasking skills a lot as there is a lot of tasks you have to handle at the same time to support the trainees and trainers and make the course run smoothly.

I also feel like I'm growing with every course because it consists of different people with different needs, so I have to adjust quickly to what is happening at the moment.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would definitely choose the TEFL program because it gives you everything you need as either an experienced or new English teacher. It provides you with not only methodology principles and language awareness training, but most importantly - teaching practice followed by professional feedback.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

We are quite a small team of people and we also keep the TEFL groups rather smaller so everyone feels like part of the team. There is more trust, intimacy, and support because we all know we are in it together.

I am proud during every single final ceremony when our trainees receive their certificates because I know we helped another set of tens to hundreds of students to learn better English by having qualified and hard-working teachers.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe it is flexibility and ability to adjust to change, awareness of your company´s strengths but also weaknesses and the knowledge of who your customers are and what their needs are.
