Great for a first teaching experience in Thailand

Landed in Thailand (Phuket) on 25th february 2020, my initial plan was to visit the south for a few weeks then fly to Vietnam before heading back to Ireland around april. Then covid hit and despite anyone advice I decided to stay, I just though it would be over within 2-3 months...but.. A few weeks later every country had shut down, I was voluntarily stranded but was not really worry as I had enough funds to live in Thailand . Eventually in june I had to find a job as my funds were gone so ended up teaching english as many other travelers had recommended me, it was basically my only option anyway. I found a great school in a town 2 hours from Bangkok with Openbook where I taugh english until april 2021. It has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to discover a new career in the teaching world which I plan to continue at the end of the year in Vietnam this time.Openbook team organised my placement, my visa, accommodation, my moped and even took the time to cheer me up (especially Jonathon) when I needed a boost at the very beginning while my confidence was near null. I never taugh before so was quite nervous at first but I love teaching now and during these few months I actually learned more than I taught.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would rent a house instead of apartment, I realized a few weeks before leaving that I could rent out get a small house with 2 bedrooms, kitchen and garden for almost the same price as my studio flat. Buying a 2nd hand bike can also be worth it if you stay for a year or more rather than renting one for 2000 BATH (50 euros) a month, as you can get a decent bike for 12-15k BATH (300-400 euros).

Perfect for a gap year or a 1st time in Thailand

I really enjoyed my time in Thailand, thanks to Open Book Teachers team and their support!!! Thailand is such a nice place... People are easy going and very friendly, the cheap food is delicious and landscapes are stunning from North to South.
I recommend to anyone thinking of teaching abroad after the whole covid situation to try Thailand and moreover to teach with Open Book Teachers, I started with a 5-month contract and extended it till March this year, I went back home just in time before the lockdown. They assisted me with everything from day 1: housing, transportation, visa etc.. . and it definitely made my year a lot easier and stress-free. Loved it!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would definitely do it again but try another location further south on the coast! The north is amazing, beautiful places and great people but I would like to work near the beach next time!

an incredible teaching experience with Openbook

I had the best time there and I can't wait to be able to go back. I was teaching English in a high school in Chonburi city which is located on the coast (1,5 hour from Bangkok), I signed for a 5-month contract (Oct'19-Feb'20) and everything went as expected... I can only recommend this program to anyone thinking of teaching in Thailand, their team is dedicated and friendly and this is a must when you are travelling abroad alone! Unfortunately for me, I had to leave 3 weeks before my contract ended as the COVID 19 outbreak started getting serious in Thailand, but openbook understood totally and told me I could be back whenever I wanted.

What would you improve about this program?
I had to go once to Laos for a 2 days trip to apply for my work visa at the Thai consulate there, if this could be avoided that would be much better, it is quite a long trip by bus (about 10hours) so I recommend to check with them to have this work visa applied in your home country directly (of course if you are flying from your country, which was not my case!)

A great experience!

Open book team made this journey easier for me, and I can only thanks them for that. Dedicated & genuine people, that's what you need abroad especially as a solo "traveler".
Initially I planned to come teach with my buddy, but ended up by myself with a lot of doubts before leaving home, anyway my flight was paid and non-refundable so let's go..! My first day in Thailand was definitely overwhelming, I was supposed to be with my friend but was just alone, still unsure if it was right or not.. On my 2nd day I met Open book in Bangkok and from there everything seems clearer, no more doubt (almost :)). their team was very welcoming and helpful which was exactly what I needed at that time. They took care of everything for me, visa, accommodation, transportation etc... I just head back to the US last month after teaching for almost a year in Phetchabun + 5 months in Chonburi. It was the greatest experience of my life so far, although I was so happy to get back home, I was also sad to leave Thailand! Guys, if you're thinking to go abroad, then go to Thailand and if you wanna teach english then definitely go with open book!

What would you improve about this program?
The orientation could be a bit longer, 1 day seems just a bit too short.

My incredible year teaching in Thailand

I decided to take a year off after my graduation, after some online researches about South East Asia, I finally chose Thailand as destination and Openbook for my first teaching abroad experience (it was also my first trip oversea alone). I was full of doubts about my ability for this adventure, especially in the last days before my departure, I was so stressed out that I kept questioning the whole trip and kept thinking to myself "what am I doing? why going so far, why not Mexico, Panama...??". But the doubt was completely gone as soon as I exited Bangkok airport, I was there finally, totally overwhelmed with a mix of excitement, fear of the unknown and joy! I will always remember the feeling of the heat hitting me as I walked out of the air-conditioned airport hall, from 60 F to 100F, that was it Bangkok, Thailand! The day after I met the full Openbook team, they welcomed me and took care of me right away, I knew at that time that I was in good hands and was going to enjoy this experience fully.
If you think about a similar adventure, don't overthink it and just do it! ;)

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
A grilled yellow worm (the big ones..) on my first night in Bangkok (kaosan rd). Not that bad actually but definitely not my type of snacks!

The journey is nothing without the right destination

Following a bad break up, I took some time off and landed in Thailand for the first time of my life, enjoyed it to the point to extend my trip from a month to months! I found myself teaching in Thailand for 1,5 year and absolutely loved it. Their team helped me a lot by organising everything (preparation, arrival, transportation, accommodation, etc...) and taking care of work visa and work permit. The orientation was fun and very interesting, I learned a lot about Thai culture which was essential for me. I also found important to have a team able to advise me if needed, they are experienced and always ready to help! I definitely recommend this agency especially if you are a solo traveler, or for a first trip in Asia, they are honest, efficient, welcoming and provide a great support :))

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I forgot my wallet on the bus during a weekend trip which could have been a nightmare, I had no money, no atm, and did not book a hotel yet.. so I contacted Jonathan from the agency who arranged me some funds sent right away via a local grocery store, that was greatly appreciated! Never found my wallet but spent a great weekend anyhow.
