Take a Chance, Go Abroad!

My experiences teaching and living abroad in Thailand through the TravelBud agency are continuing to shape who I am with each day! I have been working and living here since July 2023, am still here until at least March 2024, and would want to be no where else in this world. Want a sure way to test your grit, expand your mind, and build your mental capacity to understand and appreciate cultural differences? Go teach and live abroad!

I embarked on my journey with the TravelBud agency. They seem to only hire people who have had experiences living and working abroad, which is very helpful. My support manager, Kim (South Africa), has been nothing but a true gem for me in my experience. As black women, our experiences through life abroad are VERY different from those of other races. It continues to be comforting that I have Kim to relate to as I tackle the day-to-day challenges that arise. We have developed a life-long connection thanks to Travel Bud!

Through this agency, I was connected to an “on-site” company. I’m guaranteed a job placement, although job security in Thailand is very loose. Schools have the liberty to hire and fire at will! The in country partner has done a beautiful job of leading the hiring process, handling logistics, and keeping up with visa needs. The partner also assists with housing arrangements—- paid through your monthly salary. Most schools pay you a salary in which you can afford to live generously off of. It’s a pretty solid program that’s being run, although I do question the legality of hiring teachers and allowing them to work before they receive official work permits (perhaps some under the table actions happening—- *wink* *wink*).

Please understand that living and working abroad is not all of what it may be cracked up to be. Agencies will show you ALL of the good in what could come with this type of lifestyle, for there is in fact much good in these experiences. However, you must be willing to do a lot of introspective work in order to truly thrive in this type of environment. There will be ups and downs. If you develop the skills needed to turn the “downs” into “ups”, however, you’re sure to have a life-changing experience. You won’t know what it’s like until you’re in your new city, in your new school, and living out the truth of what it is to be abroad. I can honestly say, however, that I’ve received ample support through everything.

If teaching and living abroad sounds like something you’d be into (even if there’s just a small ounce of curiosity), I say go for it!

Pros
  • Generous and Safe Community
  • Food
  • Life-Long Relationships and Connections
Cons
  • Housing
  • Laundry
  • Culture shock/Homesickness

Response from TravelBud

Dear Nydia,

Thank you so much for your review. It is so great to hear that you are enjoying all the wonderful experiences that teaching in Thailand has presented thus far. From my personal experience teaching in Thailand, I can confirm that this is such an amazing opportunity to not only learn to appreciate different cultures, but to also experience real personal growth. I am so happy to hear that you had such a great experience dealing with Kim, and that you were able to relate to her when it comes to dealing with life abroad as a person of colour.

Regarding job security in Thailand, the schools do have the liberty and final decision to hire new teachers at will. The process does depend on who the school wants to interview, budget, how ready they are in terms of documents and the first impression made across videos, resumes and during potential video Interviews, but it is very rare for a teacher to be let go from the school. The school is also governed by the labour laws of the country which can also be very different to that of our own home country which is why, depending on the reason for being let go, you have the support to be placed elsewhere.

Regarding your comment around teaching on a tourist visa, It's the norm to have teachers arrive in Thailand on a Tourist Visa and then switch to a Non B Visa within a few weeks after they start teaching. As long as schools can prove they are in process of completing correct visa paperwork and work permit paperwork, protocol is being followed whilst the application is being processed. If a teacher has all the legalized documents in order from the beginning they will be able to switch to a Non B Visa very quickly. If their legalized degree or other paperwork takes a long time it will lengthen the process as a whole. Luckily our teachers have constant support through the process :)

Adjusting to living in the Land of Smiles can be full of ups and downs, and I can tell you from personal experience that it is important to be willing to put the work in to get the most out of all the experiences on offer. It makes us happy to hear that you are enjoying every moment of teaching and living abroad.

Stay well Nydia, and keep enjoying Thailand.

Warm Regards,
Ben & The TravelBud Team

A Super Supportive Experience From Start to Finish

I started my journey with TravelBud around March 2022, this was the preliminary stages where I was feeling quite unsure about the idea of moving across the world to start a new career. However, I am so glad I made the leap! It has been the most rewarding experience so far, so much so that I decided to extend my posting for an additional 6 months. That's not to say that it has always been perfect, though. To be fair, the job placement I was given was a lot more advanced than what the TESOL course covered - this was delivered outside of TravelBud so not their fault - but I have enjoyed the challenge. Also, the Thai education system is wonderful but sometimes a little bit disorganised in my experience, so if you're like me and like to be prepared for everything, you do have to learn to live by the Thai phrase 'sabai sabai' (chill out/take it easy). Living in Thailand is a really amazing experience, though, and I recommend it to everyone!

The team at TravelBud was amazing. In particular, Aubrey, who answered every single one of my questions so quickly and with so much detail, that I was continually reassured every step of the way. Choosing to do this experience through TravelBud makes it almost seamless. The process was transparent and I fully trusted Aubrey and her team, which meant that by the time I arrived in Thailand most (if not all) of my documents were in order and I was guaranteed a placement in a school before I had even entered the country, which was amazing. To add, I was traveling with my boyfriend, who also has high praise for TravelBud and Aubrey's customer service, and we were both placed in the same area and in the same school which made the transition much smoother when starting in a new country, city, language, culture, job, etc!

To summarise, if you want to make the move to become a teacher abroad, I would recommend going via TravelBud, especially if it's your first time. It really is like having someone to hold your hand through all of the hard bits - but in the best way!

Thank you, Aubrey, and thank you TravelBud team :)

Pros
  • Communication
  • Guaranteed Job Placement
  • Placed With Partner
Cons
  • High Cost

Response from TravelBud

Dear Lauren,
First of all, thank you so much for your incredible review, we appreciate it greatly and WE are glad that you made the LEAP and put your faith in us. We are thrilled that you are finding your experience rewarding and that you’ve actually extended your posting with your school to gain some more out of this life-changing adventure which you are currently on.
As with every experience, there are always ups and downs, and nothing is ever just rosy all the time, so having imperfect moments is part of the experience and always a chance to learn and grow. We will reach out to you via email to find out more about your TESOL course experience, as we of course want to improve the TESOL course in any way we can to best prepare teachers for when they eventually step into the classroom.
The Land of Smiles can be a bit chaotic at the best of times, and I know from personal experience what a rollercoaster a school's organisational skills can be, but it’s all part of the ‘mai pen rai’ experience.
It warms my heart to know that Aubrey was such an incredible help and that the experience whilst working with her was so positive, Lauren.
THANK YOU again, Lauren, stay well and continue being amazing.

Amazing

Extremely smooth and informative staff. Saskia Smuts helped me during my application and time in Thailand. I'd definitely recommend this experience. I was a little nervous to go so far away from home alone, but they made the process simple in terms of explaining VISAs and other issues. When i arrived in Thailand, everything was already prepared for me in advance. I loved meeting new people and learning about their culture. Thank you TravelBud for helping me get to Thailand, and for helping me become a certified TEFL teacher!

Dear Deepali,
We so appreciate your review and your willingness to share your experience with all those thinking about embarking on a Teach Abroad journey. Feeling nervous before travelling abroad by yourself is completely normal, I myself still get the travel-jitters before I board a flight, so we are very happy that we could be there for you to offer assistance and ease some of the worries you had.
The Land of Smiles is such a hospitable place and the perfect country to start a TEFL journey, we love to hear that you enjoyed meeting new people and learning more about the Thai culture - that is what travel is all about after all!
When the TEFL-teaching bug bites again, Deepali, we are here as always and would love to assist you to find your next teaching placement.
Warm regards,
Saskia

Travelbud-Thailand

I am so glad I found this program! I was scared to try and find a job on my own, especially as I hadn't traveled much before. You also hear the horror stories, so at least with Travelbud I had someone guiding me.
Kim helped me to finally move abroad and become an English teacher! She helped guide me through the process. The help Kim provided was amazing, through and I always felt like I had someone in my corner who was looking out for me. She is responsive, helpful and genuinely wanted to help make my transition and time in Thailand.
She checks up on you even once you are placed and is always readily available to answer any questions I might have.
I think the program is great because they have so many resources and programs all over the world so you really have a lot of options for where you want to go! I also love that after my first year teaching, I have the support of the program for a lifetime in many different countries!!

Pros
  • They check on you constantly
  • You have lifetime placement
Cons
  • Some Thailand schools do not pay during the school holidays

Relocating from South Africa to Thailand

As you might know, relocating to a different country for work can be quite a daunting and nerve wrecking experience. If you're like me, and love moving to different countries (Thailand in particular) for work, traveling and cultural immersion, doing it through Travel Anywhere- Travelbud- Explore Asia, is the way to go. As you can imagine, simply traveling to Thailand is an easy experience, but moving to Thailand for work, that's a whole different ball game. The reason I would recommend doing it through the above mentioned companies/partners, is because they guide you thoroughly through the documentation process, what you can expect to experience this side, as well as the cost of living in Thailand (the money you can expect to spend this side). My biggest advice I can give you is that; Connecting with schools in Thailand isn't an easy process, so working through companies that can get your foot in the door and prepare you for life is Thailand, is the way to go.

PS - I hope you guys are lucky enough to work with Kim Le Roux (Support Manager from Travelbud). She's from SA and Obi-Wan Kenobi'd me through the entire relocation process. Any questions regarding Thailand, moving there, what you need to survive, the anxiety or fears you have about relocating, She's your girl!

Pros
  • Informational Support for Relocating
  • Documentational Support to become a Teacher
  • Cultural Exposure during Induction Week
Cons
  • Total expenses throughout this program is high.
  • You're not necessarily placed where you preferred to be placed.

Teaching Abroad

This has been the single greatest experience of my life and Thailand has become a home from home for me. Everyday is different and an extraordinary experience, as I immerse myself in this wonderful culture and living a dream come true, as it is all I could've hoped for a more and I can't believe where I am or what I am doing most days. I was welcomed in by the community and can't see myself leaving anytime soon, as I have found somewhere I feel I belong and I am so grateful and feel so blessed with what I have each day and some days have had their challenges, but they have all been learning and growing lessons and my time here has given me some of the most incredible and unforgettable memories I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

Pros
  • language exchange
  • personal growth and discovery
  • the fulfilling position as a teacher
Cons
  • miss-communication and misunderstandings with language barriers
  • covid-19 restrictions
  • no breaks and intense teaching schedule

Grateful for TravelBud!

My partner and I came to Thailand to teach together. TravelBud made getting to Thailand a bit easier. They set us up with a teaching agency in Thailand, and they were available nearly 24/7 to answer any questions we had along the way. Special shout-out to Kim, for always checking in on us and supporting us form a whole other country! We wouldn’t be in Thailand if it wasn’t for TravelBud. We love living in Thailand and we’re moving from right outside Bangkok to the heart of Krabi. Additionally, the network of friends that we’ve made across the country is incredible. Anywhere we travel there are friends we can meet up with and adventure with. There’s a bit of everything in Thailand - beaches, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, canyons, busy cities, farms, and many beautiful temples all throughout. TravelBud’s staff are friendly and helpful and we definitely will be teaching through a TravelBud program again in the future!!

What would you improve about this program?
I think visa assistance is something most international companies can improve upon. Specifically for Thailand as the entry process is extensive and tricky. The agency we were placed with in Thailand were supposed to offer more visa support but they didn’t, so we’re actually grateful that TravelBud was able to answer a lot of our questions that our agency couldn’t.

Life Changing Experience

Before reaching out to TravelBud, I was struggling to find a teaching job in Thailand on my own. What I didn't realize was that most schools only hire through agencies, making it incredibly difficult to apply to jobs without going through a company. I had only an English Bachelor's degree and an online TESOL certification behind me, making it impossible to find a job on my own. I found TravelBud after several weeks of unsuccessful job searching. Kim was incredibly helpful in guiding me along my journey- her bubbly personality and demeanor helped me to feel at ease and comfortable with the program and the people who would help me get to Thailand. I was prepared to research and complete all of the stressful documents and other hoops before my trip, but TravelBud guided me through the process smoothly and with the least amount of stress possible. The process was very quick as well- I contacted TravelBud in July, received my placement details in late August, and was in Thailand in early October. I have been in Thailand for two months now and I am incredibly grateful that I followed through with this experience. I have learned so much not only about solo traveling and Thai culture, but also about myself. Had it not been for TravelBud, my experience would have been completely different and definitely far more stressful.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My first two weeks in Thailand felt like a dream. Due to the pandemic, I stayed in Phuket for a week as an alternative to quarantine. TravelBud passed me along to their in-country partner, so after Phuket I stayed in Hua Hin for a weeklong orientation. I fell in love with Thailand immediately in those first two weeks- I made many friends and had many fun experiences. When I got to my placement in a very rural area of Thailand, I felt incredibly lonely for nearly a month. I asked to be placed in a rural area for my own growth purposes and knew that I wanted a slower pace and to feel like I was in Thailand. Asking for this, I knew that loneliness and homesickness would be a factor, but the seclusion hit me much harder than I expected and nearly broke me. To combat this, I began to meditate every day- each morning before school or when I woke in the morning and at times when I felt very low. I took many walks in nature and explored- I took to wandering around my town in the early mornings, listening to meditation music or uplifting podcasts while I soaked in the architecture and life around me. Recently there have been a few long weekends so I have taken advantage of those by traveling to nearby towns, booking a cheap but cute hotel for a night or two. It's not been easy and it wouldn't be fair to claim that it has been, but I knew this would be a challenge when I chose it. I chose to move to a country entirely different from my own for the growth experience and my, have I received it! Though there have been some hard times, I am incredibly grateful that I stuck it out past my lowest points. I am much stronger for it and I now have a wealth of beautiful stories and experiences to share.
