One option is a 4-week, in-class course, while the other is a combined/hybrid course where you study TEFL theory and language awareness online before completing training in-class for two weeks. TEFL Campus threw me into a new community with people excited to experience a new culture and learn a new skill. The instructors were welcoming and ready to share information of Phuket and the course. I learned a lot very fast. The 4 weeks of the course was packed full of learning and teaching. The instructors were very knowledgeable about the course information and analyzing our teaching practices. I feel confident that I could teach a class effectively with the skills acquired from Eric and his team.

I highly recommend taking this program if you are considering a career in TEFL/TESOL. It is very challenging, but very rewarding, and you should feel ready to start your career in the field by the end of the four week course. After teaching 6 observed lessons, receiving so many helpful materials and feedback, and being assured of the dedicated job support, how could that not be the case?

This course was tough work, but I feel pretty well prepared to begin teaching. The instructors, staff, Thai students and student peers were all fabulous and fun to work with. I'm glad I chose to take an in-person on-site course rather than online. It was really cool to begin my time abroad with a huge support system, it made the transition really easy. The month flew by! Between observed teaching, assignments, and independent study, it was hard to find time to do much else but eat. I only wish I'd had more time to go to the beach.

I had an awesome experience doing my TEFL certification at TEFL campus Phuket.

From the pre-course info ,up to the last day of the course, our instructors were outstanding and supportive in any possible way. I learned a lot about teaching English and I feel confident to enter the class room. This course had the right balance between theory and practice. I am confident that with the right mindset, dedication, perseverance and focus, any applicant will successfully finish this course at TEFL campus Phuket.

Solid course to prepare the unprepared for the world of teaching. Easy enough to wrap your head around if your head is screwed on straight. Good introduction, airport pickup and settling for those new to Phuket. Well recommended. From ski bum to the guiding light of future students of the English language. Good opportunity to be employed halfway through the course for some dedicated and motivated students.

Just try not to drink too much, or worse, not enough.

This course was super well-organized. It's very apparent that Eric, Simon, and Sue have been doing this for a while. Each lesson and assignment had a clear purpose. The staff is very supportive with lesson plans/ job searches/ general support. Would definitely recommend this program!

What would you improve about this program?

Would be really helpful if you gave us a binder with all assignments to stay organized. I know it takes a lot of time to organize that many binders, but if you just had the main packets and labelled dividers (completed lessons/ phonetics/ thai/ etc.) in there to start, you could give us handouts that were 3-hole-punched it would be so helpful.

If you're looking for a holiday on a great island with amazing people then TEFL Campus is definitely the best place to do it! All the staff are amazingly friendly and give amazing support for whatever the student needs.

In addition to the amazing support, it's a lot of fun to do your course on Phuket - fun all year round (hopefully if it's not raining!) but definitely worth it.

The course is incredibly intense but definitely worth the experience. I would recommend who plays as hard as they work to do their course at TEFL campus on Phuket!

I would definitely recommend taking the in class certification, you'll be more prepared to start your journey. My experience with TEFL Campus Phuket was amazing and i fell very happy of my choice. My group had different nationalities and awesome personalities. The course staff provided us with support even before starting the course. Different personalities of the staff enriched the content of the certification.

Questions & Answers

When is the best time to get hired?

Schools generally hire when they need teachers which is the beginning of the school year but from what I've seen, there are jobs being offered all year round (not as many choices thought). Each school has difference starting dates as a lot of the schools are private and choose their own holidays.

What was your job search process like post-graudation?

We received job placement information. Throughout the course we were offered to apply for a wide range of jobs from all over Thailand. After you complete the course, you are added onto a Tefl campus graduate Facebook page where jobs are posted all the time. How much should I budget?

I went to Phuket with my wife, and during the course we spent roughly $300 per week. So $150 per week per person should do you well. We mostly spent money on food and drinks, didn't make any tourist purchases. You could spend even less if you wanted to, but we ate at decent restaurants. Street food is incredibly cheap, and some people survive on that, but it is all fried and not particularly...

Why did you choose this program?

The program's accreditation weighed heavily in my decision to attend TEFL Campus Phuket. The online reviews were positive, and I wanted the classroom experience in a Thai setting since, ultimately, I plan to teach in Thailand. My wife and I looked forward to spending extended time in Phuket, enjoying the beaches and learning about the area.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

TEFL Campus Phuket provided extensive assistance in getting acclimated to the area and program. For example, course director, Eric Haeg, recommended housing options and restaurant choices, suggested notebook/classroom supplies, highlighted local tourist sites, offered a scooter and provided job placement assistance.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

There is a wonderful hotel close to the campus called Phuket Chino Inn. This is fairly new property, is well maintained, has friendly staff, and is very reasonably priced. The hotel was very conveniently located just a 100 feet from the campus. By staying at the hotel, you don't have to worry about traffic delays and getting to class late.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The first week was mainly spent in the classroom, learning the course structure, expectations, content, methodology, and grammar. Subsequently, a typical day included study in the mornings focusing on grammar and phonetics, lesson preparation in the afternoons and teaching/observing teacher practices in the early evenings.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Given my age, I was not sure how I would adjust back to a classroom setting. However, this ended up being one of my favorite parts of the program. The teachers were very supportive, made learning the content fun, and systematically equipped you to become an effective teacher. The smaller class size facilitated a more interactive atmosphere.

What are the main benefits of this course?

The course teaching time, as you're learning the curriculum, not only prepares you for this career, but is very rewarding working with the ESL students.

What position do you hold at TEFL Campus? What has been your career path so far?

I started teaching in Thailand in 2004 before going to work in South Korea. After having been to Thailand, I really wanted to get back so I took a job teaching science in Sriracha (home of the famous Sriracha sauce). I was asked to become an online TEFL course tutor in 2007 before becoming an onsite trainer in 2008. I was named the course's Lead Trainer in 2011 and now I'm the Course Director.

Did YOU teach abroad? If so, where and what inspired you to go?

I got hooked on travel after studying abroad in college. My university studies were great, but what I learned during one semester in Europe provided me with more lessons than any classroom could have. Taking that a step further, I graduated from college and figured I'd start my life-long learning by living and working aboard. I haven't looked back since.

What does the future hold for TEFL Campus -- any exciting new programs to share?

The future is bright. We're always looking for ways to provide a more rewarding experience for our trainees. TEFL training is the first priority, but the weekends offer chances for travel and other experiences.

We're working on including a Thai language course, as well as a Thai cooking course. We've also started a partnership with a professional training company that will offer one-day seminars on emergency first aid response. We feel all of these are great complements to our main TEFL training course.

What about the future of the teach abroad industry? Have you noticed any big changes in TEFL courses?

To be honest, I'm a bit worried by all the online courses. They can be great for experienced teachers and for those who've already undergone in-class training. However, if you've never been in the classroom and never received feedback on your teaching, how are you to know if you're doing it right? Practice makes perfect, but practice is pointless without a good coach, or a trainer in this case.

If there's one thing that our trainees agree on, it's that they don't see how anyone can teach English without having a bit of guided experience in the classroom first.

Which teach abroad destination is most underrated? Conversely, which is most overrated?

That depends on one's circumstances, interests and needs.

Countries like South Korea or Saudi Arabia are great for those who need to earn a lot of money but they can be rough on those who are looking for more adventure and time for travel. Conversely, countries like Italy, Argentina and Thailand are excellent for anyone who wants to explore local history and culture, but if you need to save a lot of your salary, accomplishing these goals can be difficult.
