About Program

Location:
Journey to the mountain towns of the Dominican Republic and live in the rural community you will be serving. With little cellphone service, electricity, or running water, you'll come to understand first-hand the lifestyle of the millions living in rural poverty.

Project Details:
In nine days, we'll complete the construction of a water or sanitation project. The communities we work in either lack access to running water safe for drinking, or lack access to hygienic bathrooms. In a water project, our team will construct a water system, in which a fresh water source will be connected via gravity-driven aqueduct to the homes of every family. In a sanitation project, needy families without bathrooms will have ventilated improved pit latrines built adjacent to their homes.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here. Learn more about how BLUE Missions is promoting ethical volunteering.

Yes, I recommend this program

Changed my life

I participated on my first BLUE Missions service trip in 2011 and it completely changed my life. I was scared a first, living in a rural community for a week without access to water, electricity, cell-reception is hard. However, as soon as I arrived in the community of Rio Piedra, Dominican Republic I knew I was where I was supposed to be. Working hand in hand alongside of the locals to complete the construction of a gravity driven water system is a very unique experience. Would highly recommend this program and service trip to anyone who is ready to get their hands dirty and make a direct impact on a rural community that lacks access to water and sanitation.
