About Program

Children with special needs and disabilities are often marginalize, the country has no medical or social intervention to support these children and their families, making most of them to live in abject poverty and conditions.

This project seeks to give volunteer support to the few under resource centers that give medical and emotional care to these children and their mothers. This is project is in the form of outreaches to homes and community centres to administer medical and physio support for the children as well as emotional and psychological support to their families.

Volunteers are in urgent need to come support the staff to help train them in basic life skills, like how to dress, comb their hair, tie or lace their shoes, etc, as well as basic drawing, crafts, English and writing.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with SFLIG Volunteers for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here. Learn more about how SFLIG Volunteers is promoting ethical volunteering.

Helping the SFLIG-family

The staff members of SFLIG are doing great work. They see what people need and try to give them what they need. As volunteer I was allowed to be part of that. Sally invited my friend and I for all the projects. When we needed anything from her, she gave it to us.

The host family we stayed with feels like family to me. Just like the other volunteers. It's one big family. We made a lot of trips and visited sights. We got enough free time to do what we wanted to do.

I really enjoyed my time with SFLIG. I'm proud to be part of the SFLIG-family!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would like to tell future SFLIG volunteers that they should enjoy the local population. The people are very warm people. Read enough information about the organisation and the country before you go. Please contact the organization. They will help you with any questions you have. If you go and need a visa, arrange it in time. And enjoy!
Pros
  • The staff-members of Sflig
  • The Ghanian food
  • The possibilities to help
Cons
  • Be carefull with your belongings when you're outside the Sflig-house
  • Sometimes the power goes off
  • You have to shower with cold water

Great initiative

I must say SFLIG is a home for volunteers and a great place for supporting people who are financially handicapped and other disabilities. I never regret working with SFLIG.
All the programs we organized were impactful, especially supporting girls in their puberty with sanitary towel every month, and feeding orphanage kids sometimes. I also like the fact that we helped volunteers and guided them through a support system for this journey. Volunteers support help improve the learning of kids most of the time.
