About Program

Assist in providing community and medical services to those in need while gaining global health experience and immersing yourself in a new culture!

ISL teams serve in many of the communities that struggle with economic and ethnic tensions as well as access to healthcare. While our programs mostly operate in the Dominican Republic, we do take visits to the Dominican/Haitian border to serve residents of the refugee communities in the border zone. This is often one of the most impactful experiences that our volunteers have.

Program Highlights

ISL has over 20 years of experience providing volunteers opportunities in 12 different countries
Our programs are always coordinated by our in-country employees, who are locals and know the area and culture well
We work under the direction of the local government Ministries of Health, and students are only involved to the extent that these officials approve
We treat acute conditions only and maintain contact with, and in most cases, re-visit work sites again and again to ensure a lasting relationship

This was my first International trip and I lived every bit of the service given to the communities of Haiti and DR. Our team leader was very prepared and organized. She was so helpful and generous during our stay. The team I was with was perfect. We all came knowing no one, but worked together so well. I definitely look forward to working with International Service Learning again and experiencing a new culture.

ISL offers opportunities to serve and travel to 14 countries including the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It was great to combine the two countries of the one island and compare the two cultures. The country coordinator was great and the variety of activities was fun. The translators and staff were helpful but could have been better prepared. The two local doctors were great to work with and they were open to dialog, which is always helpful. The rest day activities were great with fabulous beaches. The children were absolutely adorable. It's a great trip to serve on!

What would you improve about this program?

1. More staff to help with translations
2. Better orientation to include house visits, medical Spanish and clinic triage/pharmacy

How old do you have to be?

Our minimum age requirement for our volunteer programs is 14. If you are between 14 and 18 we do offer specially designed High School programs to fit your needs. Any volunteers 18 or older may participate in any of our programs.
