About Program

Sadhana Forest is a reforestation and water conservation project in the international township of Auroville, South India. Founded in 2003, we are reforesting 70 acres of severely eroded land to bring back the indigenous Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. Volunteers come and live on our sustainable, off-grid, solar-powered, low waste, vegan campus. We provide them with food and accommodation and they take part in the community life. Volunteers participate in the water conservation and reforestation work and plant, mulch, and water trees during the season. They also perform maintenance tasks around the community. During their time off they can partake in various community activities or visit the local area.

We also welcome many visitors that come to see our project, host groups of local children in a natural learning space, take care of rescued cows in our vegan animal sanctuary, host a gift economy vegan Tea Hut and self-directed learning courses in our UniverCity of Compassion.

Sustainable Lifestyle

Volunteering at Sadhana

My time here at Sadhana Forest was quite a unique and beautiful experience.

I came here not knowing what to expect, just wanting to learn about reforestation, living sustainable and eco-friendly but I found myself emerged in a much more enriching experience.

Sadhana is a place where you live within a community, working together through selfless service called "seva". Everyone contributes to the community in different ways, such as, helping in the kitchen, cleaning the toilets and accommodation areas, helping with the reforestation project, working in the Goshala - cow sanctuary, and many more jobs.

We come together as a community at meal times where we enjoy fresh, whole, organic food prepared by the volunteers in the kitchen. It gives us the opportunity to get to know one another, sharing and learning about one another's experiences.

There are many other activities that connect the community like core value talks, sharing circles, non-talent shows, nights out and eco-documentaries. Various activities can also be hosted by volunteers where they can share what they know like yoga, meditation, NVC, men/women circles and much more.

Overall in my experience, what has impacted me the most is the connections I have made with the people here. I have never felt more welcomed, included, heard, understood with people I have just met in all my life. It has felt like I have always known the people here and that we are like family.

In a bigger view, Sadhana is a tremendous project that has made a huge impact on the world, not only with the reforestation they have done, but also facilitating a community with its core values of inclusivity, non-competition, selfless work and compassionate living for anyone and everyone to be apart of. Their endless dedication to creating this new world has my utmost respect.

I highly recommend this experience for anyone who this resonates with even in the slightest. It will broaden your perspective on life and you will learn for much about yourself and others.

Sadhana is a place I will never forget

A wonderful conscious community

My experience at Sadhana Forest has been wonderful! The community of volunteers is very strong, kind and generous. The most beautiful aspect of Sadhana Forest are the connections that you form with people from all around the world. The community attracts a diverse range of individuals, all who are consciousness and warm. I enjoyed living simply and spending time in the forest with my animal friends. We participated in daily volunteer work, in areas that supported the maintenance of the Sadhana Forest community (sometimes foresting, other times cooking and cleaning). Eating delicious vegan meals together was a favourite part of my day, and rewarding after challenging work. The community is very organised, and so adjusting can be difficult. However, I felt well supported and cared for. I would recommend staying for a minimum of 3 weeks to feel integrated in the community.

Living in a Forest.

Coming to sadhana forest was something that I gifted myself with. This place offered me much more than just an forest experience. I came with a list of things to learn starting from reforestation, water conservation, sustainable lifestyle, living in a community and to name a few. I liked the non-judgemental environment that is offered by the place and people. It made me feel very connected to the nature and for that I'm very grateful. The conversations and people had a huge impact in my pursuit of purpose. This place offered me to channelize my thoughts and give a direction to venture out into the unknown with my recharged self and disconnected beliefs.

Amazing project for families

Sadhana Forest was the largest volunteering project in which we have participated. We have quite some experience by now in several volunteering projects, and we were even involved in the creation of one, so I understand the challenges of managing such a large scale project, and such a large group of people. I admire the resilience of the project, and the outstanding reforestation and water conservation efforts developed here and in the other locations. I felt much lighter living in a simple and meaningful way, in the middle of the forest, meeting so many interesting and stimulating people who keep offering very interesting free workshops. I feel relieved that the food I eat, the energy I consume and the waste I produce are sustainable, which really frustrates me in my daily life. But the most important thing for me is the environment and care provided for families. It is incredible that such a welcoming place to people from different backgrounds and experiences can provide such a safe and stimulating space for children to freely explore themselves, their relations and surroundings. The families living here are an incredible inspiration. Thus, I warmly recommend it for families!

Sadhana forest experience

My experience in Sadhana was great overall, living in the forest for 10 days away from the city and in a vegan friendly environment was amazing. I really loved that.
It is also a great family friendly environment. The long-term volunteers are always available to answer questions and help if needed.
You help around the forest for around 5 hours per day in the morning (+2 afternoons a week) and you get accomodation in private hut for couples and families, or in dormitories for single travelers. You also get three big meals a day: big breakfast with fruits, lunch and dinner.
Beside that, I met incredible people there that I will definitely keep as friends.

Fantastic immersion in sustainable alternative life

Sadhana Forest is a beautiful community. Everyone who comes here seems to be, almost by default, interesting, compassionate people. I'm leaving here with a very full cup, and some heightened aspirations for my own life. Living in community is wonderful, with kids running around and people supporting you on all sides. The focus on sustainability is inspiring, with almost no waste and very little resource consumption. Loved how natural it is here to slip into the habit of being generous and free giving. I would certainly be keen to come back for awhile.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I'd be keen to come for longer. Two weeks is fine, but making space to fully immerse for time measured in months would be incredible.
Pros
  • So friendly
  • Alternative lifestyle
  • Range of activities
Cons
  • Not for those who struggle with a bit of rough sleeping
