About Program

All Hands and Hearts provides community-inspired, volunteer-powered disaster relief.

With the frequency and intensity of disasters on the rise around the globe, there's an urgent need for a more thoughtful approach to how we respond and help impacted communities recover. When a disaster strikes, All Hands and Hearts arrives early and stays late to address vulnerable communities' immediate and long-term needs. We work alongside the local leaders and deploy our unique volunteer model to enable direct impact — helping families and communities recover by building safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.

Thanks to our community of passionate volunteers, donors and partners, we've provided 20 years of disaster relief support to over 1.4 million people.

Working as a Team

I volunteered for the Houston Project back in Jan of this year and it was great. I have also volunteered on other AHAH projects and the living model is the same. Communal living with people who want to make a difference in the world. If you are ready to work and have a good attitude, a sense of adventure and don't mind sharing a space with 30 other people then this is the place for you. The people are truly amazing and I just loved volunteering. I am now at the Coastal Bend Program in Rockport TX and find that although it is the same state this program has a more mellow feel to it, possibly because of the small town feel. Still the people that I have met here are amazing and I am so thankful to be able to get to know everyone. Definitely a place to get to know new people and new places.

Working hard (and sweating!) for a great cause in PR

AHAH is exceptionally well run. Their recovery and relief mission here in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico is well executed. The base camp is organized, well equipped and efficient. Just as important, the staff nurture a warm, welcoming culture sustained by the long term volunteers. I am here for two weeks, a relatively short stint, and am enjoying the job site camaraderie and strong work ethic. The days are hot and sweaty. None of the roof repair, mold sanitization, or numerous other jobs are easy but there are zero slackers or complainers. I’m impressed and humbled. This is a great experience.

What would you improve about this program?
Not recommending bringing a sleeping bag. Sheets and possibly a light blanket are sufficient.

This Is The Program You Have Been Searching For

Cannot speak more highly of a program/organization. I was given the oppurtuinity to engage and help the community of Yabucoa recover from Hurricane Maria, while forming the strongest relationships with fellow volunteers from all around the world. AHAH has no fee to vounteer and provides housing and food for all those on base, making the experience meaniful and financially possible for individuals on a budget. Working from 7-3 every day AHAH taught me discpline and living communally with 60+ other vols has taought patience. I have been able to explore the island of Puerto Rico while also working harder than I ever have before. I am so grateful to have found this program and hope that others will find their experience as meaningful as mine. xo

great experience in Yabucoa

I am volonteerig in Yabucoa in Porto Rico for six weeks. It has been amazing so far, I feel like I am learning a lot on various topics from cementing to sanitation. We are learning quite fast how to do various tasks and then we can complete them on our own. I also got to meet a lot of people from around the world, coming with different backgrounds. It is always interesting to get to know them and find out why they came here.
And meeting the owners of the houses we are fixing is always really touching and interesting. They can tell us about their story so we can understand better why we are needed here to help them. I highly recommand this experience to anyone who would want to make a real difference. I will definitely take part in another All Hands and Hearts program after this one.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind, ready to meet a lot of different people and to learn a lot of things.

Puerto Rico

I'd really enjoyed my experience here with all hands and hearts. I have struggled with the communal living space and lack of privacy if you need it. The people on a whole are epic and I've learnt so much from every single one of them. I wish there was a little more constructive training prior to going to a work site. Clear instruction on site is something I think would make each project on a house run much more smoothly. Everyone coming to volunteer is an adult and so a guide outlining the processes would make sure each individual is knows their role within the team and working to produce a goal which would be more time efficient and productive overall.
I was quite overwhelmed at first by how many people were here and found it quite intimidating entering into such a big group who mostly already knew each other.
I wish there was a better chill space with comfortable sofa and tv.

What would you improve about this program?
I would improve the social structure. Bring the 4.30 meeting earlier as i feel between 3 and 4.30 there is a lot of time wasted. More frequent weekday trips to the beach - i feel when living in such communal environments it's really important to get out. More social activities during the week perhaps.

Hard work and fun

I just finished 2 weeks with Ahah in Dominica and had a great time. We worked hard at rebuilding a school and houses after the hurricane.

Expect to be moving dirt, concrete or wood a lot. Expect to get dirty and sweaty some times.

Expect to look over at someone else who is also dirty and you both smile.

We played hard at Creole fest and the volunteer dunk tank. What i liked best is how quickly new people are brought in to a community of 40+ volunteers. Whether you are staying a week or 3 months you quickly have friends from around the world and in the local community.

I have volunteered with All Hands in Houston and plan to do it again in Nepal.

I good group that is easy to work with on your schedule.

Boy is 750 characters a lot for a review. Not sure what else to say other than try it out on any of the All Hands and Hearts projects.

What would you improve about this program?
More showers :) there are a lot of people on base so making sure everyone can get through showers and lunch is important.

A fulfilling experience

I volunteered for four weeks in Nepal Haibung Project. It was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. All Hands and Hearts is doing such great work on the field. It was great to interact with the community and the its kids. I learned new skills and met some amazing people. I highly recommend this program if you want to help Nepal get back on its feet. As this program is resuming again in October 2018, I hope more and more volunteers apply for it and the program can have maximum impact.

Best experience of my life

I volunteered with All hands and Hearts houston in March. My fiancé and I went for a week which I thought would be enough but after how much we loved it and enjoyed our time I wish we had stayed 3 months. Everything was very well organised, everyone we met was so friendly we made some friends. The site supervisor Barrett would we worked with was very welcoming and so encouraging, he was patience and kind and made us feel like we could achieve anything. All the staff made us feel at home and were genuinely interested in getting to know us. The food and accommodation was well organised and cleaned daily by volunteers.

Not to sound too cliche but the experience was life changing and made us both feel differently about how we see ourselves and others and want to give our time to more programmes in the future.
I would recommend everyone to give even just one week you get as much as you give. It’s awesome

What would you improve about this program?
Nothing, the programme and organisation is fantastic!!
