Sun, Friends & Purpose: A Volunteering Experience Like No Other

Volunteering at Instituto Hemingway was a truly unique experience. What made it so special was the perfect combination of meaningful work and an amazing lifestyle. I met incredible friends from all over the world, enjoyed a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and made unforgettable memories together. The good weather and beautiful beaches made every day even better, especially after volunteering hours. Everything was close and easy to reach, which made life very convenient. On top of that, the price was excellent for everything included. It was the perfect mix of fun, purpose, and connection.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was during a beach cleanup with Instituto Hemingway when a group of us tried to speak only Spanish for an hour. It quickly turned into chaos—mixing up words, inventing new ones, and laughing non-stop at our mistakes. At one point, I accidentally asked for a “fish umbrella” instead of a bag! It was hilarious, but also one of the moments where I learned the most.
Pros
  • Great opportunities to meet international friends and build connections
  • Beautiful location with beaches, good weather, and everything nearby
  • Fun, relaxed atmosphere that mixes volunteering, culture, and social life
Cons
  • Some activities can feel disorganized at times
  • Shared accommodation may lack privacy
  • Intensity of social life can feel overwhelming for people who prefer quiet time

A Life-Changing Volunteer Experience in Spain

Volunteering in Spain has been one of the most fun and meaningful experiences of my life. Helping the environment while cleaning beaches made me feel that my work had a real impact. At the same time, I grew a lot personally and became more confident and open. Living in comfortable apartments in the city center and walking every day to the Spanish school made the experience even better, as I could keep learning the language. The cultural activities were fantastic and helped us discover the local culture. During volunteering we often sang together to stay motivated, which created such a joyful atmosphere. Our supervisor was also very friendly and supportive. It truly felt like a unique adventure.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was volunteering in beach clean-ups. At first I didn’t expect it to be so fun, but it turned into one of the best parts of the experience. We worked together, sometimes even singing while collecting trash, which made the atmosphere really positive. It was also surprising to see how much waste we could remove and how quickly a beach could look beautiful again. It made me feel proud to help the environment while meeting great people and practicing Spanish at the same time. 🌊🌱
Pros
  • Meaningful impact – Helping clean beaches and protect the environment felt very rewarding.
  • Cultural immersion – Living in the city, walking to Spanish classes, and joining activities helped me improve my Spanish quick
  • Great community – Meeting volunteers from different countries created a fun, supportive atmosphere.
Cons
  • Physical work – Beach clean-ups can be tiring, especially on hot days.
  • Weather dependent – Some activities change depending on the weather.
  • Time goes too fast – The experience is so enjoyable that it feels too short!

Making Waves for a Cleaner Planet: My Beach Clean-Up Volunteering Experience

Volunteering in beach clean-up activities with Instituto Hemingway was one of the most rewarding parts of my stay in Spain. What started as a simple environmental activity quickly became a powerful lesson in teamwork, responsibility, and connection with nature.

From the very first day, I felt part of a motivated international group, all sharing the same goal: protecting the coastline and reducing plastic pollution. Equipped with gloves, bags, and lots of enthusiasm, we worked together to collect waste, separate recyclables, and restore the natural beauty of the beach. Seeing the sand transform from littered to clean in just a few hours was incredibly satisfying.

Beyond the physical impact, the experience raised my awareness about how everyday habits affect the environment. It was eye-opening to realize how much plastic and micro-waste ends up in the ocean, often coming from small, careless actions. The coordinators explained the importance of sustainability and responsible consumption, making the activity both practical and educational.

What I loved most was the sense of community. Volunteers came from different countries and backgrounds, yet we connected easily through shared purpose. Conversations flowed naturally while we worked, and laughter mixed with meaningful discussions about climate change, travel, and cultural experiences. It reminded me that volunteering is not only about helping — it’s also about building bridges between people.

The program was well organized, supportive, and flexible, allowing everyone to contribute at their own pace. Even simple tasks felt meaningful because we could immediately see the results of our efforts. Knowing that our work helped protect marine life and preserve beautiful landscapes gave me a deep sense of accomplishment.

This experience also helped me grow personally. I became more mindful of my environmental footprint and more motivated to adopt eco-friendly habits in daily life. It reinforced the idea that change starts locally, with small actions repeated consistently. Cleaning a beach may seem minor, but when many people work together, the impact becomes powerful.

Volunteering through Instituto Hemingway offered the perfect balance between cultural immersion, environmental action, and personal development. It allowed me to give back to the community while enjoying the outdoors and meeting inspiring people. I left each session feeling energized, grateful, and more connected to the place I was living in.

I would highly recommend this beach clean-up volunteering program to anyone seeking a meaningful experience abroad. It combines environmental awareness, teamwork, and cultural exchange in a truly memorable way. For me, it was not just about cleaning beaches — it was about caring for the planet, learning from others, and becoming part of something bigger.

What was your funniest moment?
The most fun moment of the day always came after a long morning of cleaning, when we turned the work into a little game. We competed to see who could collect the most trash, laughed as we slipped on wet sand, and sometimes even made impromptu sand sculptures out of discarded items before properly disposing of them. Those moments of laughter, playful challenges, and teamwork made the hard work feel light and unforgettable.
Pros
  • Immediate positive impact
  • International connection
  • Learning and awareness
Cons
  • Physically demanding Walking and picking up trash can be tiring
  • weather conditions
  • Limited results – Sometimes the amount of trash can feel overwhelming compared to the size of the problem.

Grow, Learn, Give Back: My Permaculture Volunteer Journey

Volunteering in permaculture with Instituto Hemingway was truly a unique experience. I learned hands-on sustainable farming techniques while connecting deeply with the local community. The program combined language learning, environmental education, and meaningful social impact. Every day offered new challenges and insights, from planting and composting to understanding local culture. The supportive team made me feel part of a purpose-driven family. This experience changed how I view sustainability and community engagement forever.

What was your funniest moment?
One of the funniest moments during my permaculture volunteering with Instituto Hemingway was when we tried to carry a huge, wobbly wheelbarrow full of compost up a muddy slope—half of it spilled everywhere! Everyone burst out laughing, and instead of being frustrated, we turned it into a friendly race to see who could clean it up fastest. It was messy, chaotic, and absolutely unforgettable!

  • Hands-on learning
  • Cultural immersion:
  • Meaningful impact:
Cons
  • Physically demanding:
  • weather dependent

Paws of Hope: My Heartfelt Experience Volunteering at an Animal Shelter in Spain

Volunteering at an animal shelter in Spain was a heartwarming and meaningful experience. I helped care for abandoned dogs and cats, feeding them, cleaning their spaces, and giving them love and attention. Seeing their progress and happiness grow every day was incredibly rewarding. It taught me compassion, patience, and the importance of giving animals a second chance at life. Fantastic atmophere, great community of friends and volunteers and my Spanish improved a lot to be honest. Bilbao was amazing.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment happened when one of the dogs I was walking suddenly decided to jump into a puddle and dragged me along with him! I ended up completely covered in mud while the other volunteers couldn’t stop laughing. Instead of being upset, we all laughed together—it turned into one of the most joyful and unforgettable memories of my volunteering experience.

  • You build strong connections with both animals and fellow volunteers
  • It teaches responsibility, empathy, and teamwork.
Cons
  • The work can be physically demanding and sometimes emotional.
  • Cleaning and caring for many animals can be tiring.
  • Saying goodbye to adopted animals is bittersweet and often difficult.

Volunteering as a social media and marketing assistant in Bilbao

When I first arrived in Bilbao, I hardly had any knowledge of Spanish and was a tiny bit nervous, but everyone at the Instituto Hemingway was very kind and accommodating and made me feel welcome in an instant. It was no problem at all for the volunteer program that my Spanish skills were so low at the beginning, as I could do a lot of the work in English, and while my Spanish skills progressed over time, I was happy to see that I could do more and more of the volunteering work in Spanish. The work itself was very varied - it consisted for example in creating videos for social media, planning the social activities of the institute, designing panels and pictures for one of the classrooms and assisting in examinations. Moreover, I also had language classes in the insitute during the five weeks that I spent there, which were virtually always a lot of fun and helped me greatly to improve my Spanish skills, so that by the end of my time in Bilbao I could even have longer conversations in Spanish with my new friends. I'm very grateful for this unforgettable experience and I'm sure that I will return to Bilbao - a city which I have grown to love - with its vibrant culture, nice inhabitants and picturesque landscapes surrounding it.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
-Get yourself a Barik card at the start of the program - it allows you to travel around the whole area quite conveniently and cheaply - and use it as much as possible because there are so many nice and interesting things to see in and around Bilbao!
-Pay heed to the calendar of events when you plan your travels, as Bilbao also has great festivals that you don't want to miss out on.
-If you have any concerns or queries while you are in Bilbao, don't hesitate to ask José or any other staff member at the institute. In my experience, everyone there is always very helpful and will try to fulfil your wishes as much as possible.
-But most importantly: Just have fun and be open-minded and you'll have the most amazing time and make friends for life!
Pros
  • very nice staff and welcoming atmosphere
  • beautiful city and pretty surroundings with mountains, beaches and the sea
  • great public transport services in the whole area
Cons
  • very changeable weather
  • odd working hours - but you get used to them ; )
