About Program

Join our Marine & Wildlife Conservation team and help make an impact by working with wild animals and improving their habitat. Have an adventure of a lifetime alongside other university students from all over the world!

To develop long-lasting programmes, the Marine & Wildlife Conservation programme closely collaborates with the Sri Lankan Environmental Department and regional NGOs, on projects such as the conservation project at the turtle sanctuary, where our sanctuary has been built to combat the illegal trade of many eggs and turtles themselves whilst educating the local community.

With the help of our numerous hands-on projects, students will be fully immersed in environmental conservation, whether it be assisting with the restoration of sea turtle numbers, replanting indigenous trees, or combating plastic pollution. We have developed a long-term strategy to regenerate important areas of rainforest and maintain the marine life in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

Program Highlights

  • Turtle Hatchery: Our aim is to boost sea turtle numbers by incubating artificial nests in a secure environment and realising all hatchlings into the ocean. We also have a scheme where local fisherman brings us injured turtles which we help rehabilitate.
  • Rainforest Replantation: We aim to help regenerate the rainforest in Sri Lanka’s Southern district to its original state, providing an increase of indigenous plants and habitats for local wildlife - many are endangered.
  • Tree Nursery: Our tree nursery is where we grow all our trees which we take to be replanted.
  • School Agriculture project:Travelteer’s Agriculture Project works in partnership with local schools to grow fruit and vegetables and support local communities.
  • The Beach & River clean-up project aims to restore and protect beaches and coastal rivers which are important habitats to the marine life along the southern coast, alongside sorting recyclables for use through local businesses.

Program Impact

The Marine and Wildlife Conservation Programme combines a number of varied sub-programmes which aim to
rehabilitate and conserve the environment and marine life in Sri Lanka, all having a positive impact.

Life changing experience!

This was an absolutely amazing experience filled with life changing and memorable moments that will stay with me forever. Everyone was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and I always felt taken care of which was wonderful as someone who's new to traveling. I would definitely encourage others to take the opportunity if they're interested in making a difference, for team building, bonding, as well as it being a great point on your resume. I'm really glad I got the opportunity to take part and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Pros
  • Excellent learning experience
  • Fun and exciting
  • Something completely different

Helpful!!!!

Enjoyed!! Was anxious when first joinedbut team helped me book flights. Never booked flights before and felt silly asking but they were so friendly. Everything went smooth, supportive staff helping us and talked to me if I felt anxious or worried. Was nervous as first time travelling alone.

Working with turtles was fun! Was sad to say bye. Made lotts of friends and want to go to other locations I think there are more. At the end of the day was really good and well put together and nice people.

Amazing.

From start to finish, Travelteer went above and beyond to ensure a seamless and incredible journey. They emphasized the importance of supporting local communities and preserving the environment. We went along the beaches collecting rubbish and preserving turtle eggs. Felt really good to have hands on experience helping out as opposed to just donating money to charity. I was curious at first as it was a charity organisation but it completely surpassed my expectations. Their attention to detail, personalized service, and dedication to creating meaningful travel experiences make them stand out. I wholeheartedly recommend Travelteer and their wonderful team.

Shri Lanka

Action packed, great experience, made so many new friends.
It was a once in a lifetime experience.
After completing my studies at university intend to go again.
Definitely will recommend to anyone interested.
I particularly enjoyed working with the turtles. Great experience knowing that in some small way I was a part of helping the turtles back into their own environment.
Made me feel I was really playing a part in the preservation of this amazing species of wild life. My part in the beach cleanup and helping to maintain the enclosures was extremely rewarding.
I would definitely recommend the experience to all.

Pros
  • Well organised and privileged
  • Felt very safe in Shri Lanka
  • Very professional admin team
Cons
  • Weather was very hot

Can't wait to return (we love turtles!)

Travelled to Sri Lanka with Travelteer and it was amazing!!! I have made lifelong friends with other volunteers and we are planning our next trip back - roll on 2024!!

Working so closely with the turtles was truly a touching experience. After we helped a group get better we set them free into the sea and I felt happy that I had been able to make a difference.

I can't wait to return to Sri Lanka and try out the other programmes - I do however believe that the turtle programme will always be my favourite :)

Pros
  • Turtles!
  • Life long friends
  • Friendly people

Life changing experience !

I have just come back from travelteer project in Sri Lanka and it was the best experience of my life the staff were friendly especially the coordinator. The camp was well maintained in a stunning location and I really felt the impact i was making which was important as a previous experience volunteering it felt pointless and almost like a scam.
I was apprehensive about going at first as i didn't want a repeat of last time but i can whole heartedly recommend travelteer for anyone interested in volunteering!
