About Program

Travelteer Medical Electives work in partnership with both government and private hospitals in Sri Lanka.

As one of the busiest medical environments in the world, Sri Lanka's healthcare system is made directly accessible to medical students through this programme. Alongside Sri Lankan and foreign medical students, students will have the opportunity to work in specific departments in various healthcare settings.

Learn directly from doctors in Sri Lankan hospitals - this is a great opportunity for volunteers to gain an understanding of the healthcare systems in Asia. Volunteers will have the opportunity to shadow consultants throughout clinics, surgery lists and ward rounds. Our medical administrator will rotate volunteers through different hospital departments for a broad range of experiences - Sri Lankan private hospitals provide a structured observational and informative approach, giving real insight into private medical facilities in Asia.

Program Highlights

  • Private Hospital: Our medical administrator will rotate volunteers among various hospital departments to give them a wide range of experiences and demonstrate their in-depth understanding of private healthcare in Asia.
  • Government Hospital: Volunteer positions in government hospitals will only be observational; they will involve learning from physicians and other healthcare professionals by attending consultations and procedures.
  • Health Clinic: Travelteer collaborates with local physicians to establish "pop up" clinics that give remote and underserved communities access to fundamental medical care.

My placement in Sri Lanka

So I have just finished 3 months in Sri Lanka with Travelteer as a Bio med student on a placement. I have very little negative to say about my time there the staff were like one big family and would often meet up with us volunteers on the weekend activities, which are great, even though they have done it thousands of times I'm sure which shows how above and beyond the staff go to make it as fun as possible. The medical elective it self was brilliant well organised and brought me new insights on how life is lived somewhere so different from the UK.

Pros
  • extremely affordable
  • tons of stuff to do i was always busy
  • has massively boosted my cv and opened opportunities i wouldn't have been able to take
Cons
  • they took a while to give me a reference but they did seem busy and still made sure i got in time
  • scrubs get a little hot when your not in the hospitals which have aircon but i ended up just packing a change of clothes in a bag for when i finished at the hospital which worked great

Valuable Experience

Volunteered and shadowed medical professionals. Was very insightful and learned a lot. Would suggest if you want to help you stand out when applying for jobs, has been a fun conversation starter for me,, Was well organised and staff were helpful!. Highly recommend - once in a lifetime opportunity. People I volunteered with were as enthusiastic as me to learn more and to grow personal experience.

Overall would recommend Travelteer if you want to get some experience that makes you stand out and is fun to talk to others about! Lei.
