Atlas offers meaningful and budget friendly volunteering programs in rural Thailand. Focusing on impactful and crucial work, our education and wildlife conservation programs rely on volunteers to maintain their efforts. Our projects are both surrounded by lush foliage and amazing views.

You will be working alongside volunteers from all around the world, creating lasting friendships all whilst contributing to a meaningful experience and embracing a new culture. Our programs in Thailand cover local Education, English Teaching and Wildlife efforts. Our Elephant Refuge providing care for endangered Asian Elephants and our Wildlife Rescue Centre where a wide range of animals are safely recovered from the tourism and pet trades to live out their retirement in peace in a more natural setting. Meanwhile our Education volunteers run local school support and English language classes.

Program Impact

The support of our volunteers is essential to the refuge. The refuge offers a sanctuary for elephants to retire, and be given the respect that these amazing creatures deserve. When volunteering with the elephants, you will help them by providing essential care such as feeding and creating of enrichments, cleaning and maintaining their enclosures, and collecting of food. You will also be taught everything you need to know about the plight of the Asian Elephant.

At the Wildlife Rescue Centre volunteers usually work long days, around 8 hours; without the invaluable contribution from volunteers the center would simply not be able to function. We take our rescue and rehabilitation work very seriously. Please be aware the centre is strictly hands off. Volunteers will have no physical interaction with animals but will provide the essential daily and long-term needs of the animals, such as feeding, cleaning enclosures and providing enrichments.

At the English Teaching base, you will have a direct impact on local language efforts. You will spend part of your day assisting at local rural schools offering a supporting role and then the remaining part of your day will be helping run English language classes on site at the centre.

Highly recommend!

I had a really great experience with Atlas Volunteers. They are a relatively big volunteering organisation in Ghana, so the organisation and the staff were always reliable, as well as flexible enough to allow changes to different volunteering programmes if one didn't work out. At the weekends, it was possible to travel to various places in Ghana, such as Mole National Park (around 12 hours away) and Krokrobite Beach near Accra (around 4 hours away). Once a week, we had a family night to play games and have fun together. The Kwahu/Eastern Region area where we stayed is full of rainforests and mountains, so it doesn't get too hot at night and the nature is beautiful.

Grateful

My experience with WWFT was an unforgettable experience. I have done a number of volunteer projects with other companies, and this was by far the most professional and organized. The staff was all so helpful, knowledgeable and dedicated. The experience with the wildlife was a lot of fun but for me, and I saw some animals I'd never seen before, but the real treat was the elephants! I was so happy seeing and participating in giving these regal animals the love and care they deserve. It was humbling to be in their presence. ❤️

What was your funniest moment?
I don't really have a funniest moment, but there were a lot of laughs. The other volunteers were all great. It was great getting to know everyone.
Pros
  • Ethical experience of a lifetime
  • Learning about another culture
  • Trying food and activities you've never tried before.
Cons
  • It would have been nice to have two days off at week to explore more.

Taking care of Indian Elephants

I loved the week I volunteered at the Elephant Refuge. Besides learning a lot about elephants and what they need to live, I went home with wonderful memories of their eating habits, their tricks to open enrichments, and seeing how better their lives are now. I met the best of people: passionate animal lovers who cared for the elephants selflessly and were always excited. Furthermore, I picked up some new skills, especially in using banana leaves. If possible, I will come back and volunteer again next year.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring shoes and clothes you never want to wear afterwards again. Things can get very dirty.
Pros
  • Learning a lot about elephants and their needs
  • Experience in animal care
  • Meeting international people who share the same compassion for animals as you.
