About Program

We aim to help local temple schools in rural communities by improving their English language skills. We initiate “cultural exchange” situations with participants by studying Thai culture, lifestyles, traditions, and daily life of villagers.

Your role as a volunteer will be to assist the local community through teaching primarily (but not exclusively) English, a skill in high demand in rural Thailand, due to the opportunities it can bring about.

Education and various kinds of vocational training are much needed in Thailand, especially in the rural areas and for unprivileged youngsters. The main target group are children (mainly primary school students and also some in secondary schools), also villagers and adults who would like to learn English. Through education, children and villagers feel empowered and get motivated to get to know the outside world through cultural exchange, hope, strength and joy.

My Experience

Volunteering with Thailand Teach is an experience of a lifetime especially since the two people that run it are such wonderful, loving, caring and compassionate human beings.

My experience -
I had been interacting with Robert Newton Jr for a few months while looking up for a job in Thailand in 2014. Was keen on volunteering and helping society once I got there. Little did I know that the school that had hired me would suddenly dump me even though I had bought my tickets and got the visa etc to start working there. I informed Robert about my situation and he along with Chompoo tried to talk to that school on my behalf. Anyway may be it was destiny that the above happened. I landed in Thailand and went straight to Thailand Teach and volunteered with them while I kept looking for jobs. Both of them took me in like I was a family member and not a volunteer. The complete Thailand Teach household and all the people around are so welcoming and some have downright colourful personalities like Mr. Dang (a wonderful human being). Though it is not what they do or deal with Robert and Pi Chompoo helped me look out for jobs as well as drove me down to the immigration office in Bangkok (155kms one way) and back not once but twice. How many people would spare their time and effort for someone else?? They even helped me make a wing chun dummy from wood to train with as well as let me kick down a lot of their banana trees while training and I would still get a share of bananas when they were harvested. The list of things that they have done to make my stay there comfortable is actually very long and exhaustive
I came as a volunteer but soon I became like a member of their family. It was the way I was looked after and cared for that truly touched me and has had a deep impact on me as a person. I may have returned back but a part of me still resides in Chanasood with all the wonderful people, the lush green rice fields that I could see from my room,waking up to the beautiful chirping of the birds every morning, the love and friendships that had nurtured over time, the organic vegetables, the peace and quiet.

I can never ever thank Robert, Pi Chompoo, Mai, Ta, Toon, Nick, Egg, Sai, Fa, Dang, Jack, Nut, Noon and many other residents of Chanasood who have done much more for me than I did for them. All i can say is that -

I learned alot about Thailand and Thai culture, i learnd alot about myself and my own perspectives, I met amazing and wonderful people, I lived in an amazingly beautiful place, I worked with beautiful children and I had alot of fun! Kap Khun Ka (thank you) to everyone who made my experience what it was.

An incredible experience

Robert was kind enough to arrange a weekend for me at his wonderful house. His staff picked me up from the bus station and instantly made me feel welcome. This is an experience for people truly looking to immerse themselves in the local culture of rural life in Thailand. That being said, the location is nearby vibrant markets and everything you could need. The property is surrounded by rice fields and residents with large smiles on their face. Robert's wife Pooh is an incredible chef and clearly takes pride in her ingredients (many of which, grown in their backyard) and sharing her knowledge on Thai cuisine. I was escorted to their temple of worship, a monkey sanctuary, and to a learning centre. Being that this is my first time in Asia, it was extremely refreshing to avoid the tourist traps and understand the beauty of daily Thai life.

My favourite part of the experience was when Pooh advised me that this is an environment to not only teach English, but to also learn some Thai. Robert and Pooh have set up a space to exchange cultural values and learn from each other.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish I could have stayed longer!

Beautiful Experience

My short stay here was so enjoyable. Rob, Pooh and family were the warmest most welcoming hosts.
My experience at the local school was amazing. The children were lively keen and very pleasant. You can really see the everyday impact the programme has on the students lives and the passion and vision shared by Rob & Pooh to improve the schooling for these children. I really enjoyed my time at the school.
The area is so tranquil and the community so kind and welocming.
I would highly recommend the experience.

What would you improve about this program?
Honestly can't think of anything, I'm sure Rob has this covered himself, always developing and improving.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose Thailand Teach after months of surfing around the net. There is not a lot of local-based organizations that would allow students under 18 to join. And since my personal philosophy prohibits me to join the programs created by all those large international organizations that cost a fortune (I believe that organizations like those have their own interest in mind, generating money through creating volunteering opportunities), I looked for local ones like Thailand Teach.

With a Thailand Teach, I could really see that all the past volunteers, their efforts and donations are put to good use and that none of it is put into the pockets of the organizers. And through their Facebook page, I could see how the past volunteers all seem close to the host and happy in general with their experience. Lastly, through my interaction with Robert between emails, I began to really trust them since he is so responsible and thorough with every detail and plan.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Thailand Teach was amazing in helping me plan my trip over to Singburi. Aside from the plane tickets, everything else was planned by them. They helped me organize a contacted driver of theirs to bring me to the homestay and took care of everything thereon. They had a whole handbook on information regarding the program, what to bring, and how to get there.

With me being a high school student traveling alone, it was really helpful that Thailand Teach helped me organize such a large portion of my trip, without their help, it would have been a very hard process.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Writing from the perspective of a traveling minor, I will have to remind and emphasize on the point that THIS PROGRAM IS SAFE, and PEOPLE, IN GENERAL, ARE GOOD-HEARTED. There is no need to be afraid or nervous, especially in Thailand - the people would gladly help you out.

And remember, the people down in rural Thailand have very different life views and in order to fully embrace the experience, you'll have to put down all things you think you know and be accepting of new ideas.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I have a more detailed description of my week and the schedule of each day in my article at my site.

But here's a brief summary of the day:

Every day, depending on the school schedule of your classes, you wake up around 7:30. Then Pooh, the host, helps prepare you breakfast, and you're on your way to the school.

After teaching a few classes, you would be eating the school lunch and would eat together with the school staff.

To end off your day, you would finish your afternoon classes, return home – sometimes Pooh would take you out around Singburi – eat dinner and turn in for the day.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Fears. That's all that I felt before landing in Thailand. Traveling under 18 is not an easy task. I was worried about my own safety, worried about my ride over to Singburi, and worried that I would not make a great teacher, doing more damage than helping.

However, after arriving at the homestay and meeting the lovely host, Pooh, I figured everything is going to be ok. Since I was on my own and the youngest volunteer they've had, Pooh took great care of me, showing me around and assisting me on teaching the first few days. With her assistance, I felt more safe and confident.

What is your favorite teach abroad memory?

Most favorite memory was just after the flooding when almost everyone in areas not affected travelled to assist everyone in need. To see so many selfless and caring acts of kindness by total strangers was humbling and gave me such hope and faith in others.

What about the future of the industry? How do you think teach abroad and international education will change over the next 10 years?

Community Based Organizations that are at the front line of change will be given the opportunity to do more directly with the public and exclusive benefits only extended to 501(C) organizations. The non-profits, NGO and charities who are the current gate keepers will have to give way to social enterprise organizations that pursue a public benefit mission.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

"Today I have started volunteering with Udaan an NGO that is without any funding, just people who wish to give back to society by giving their time to teach kids at government schools. I would like to thank Charu Shah for giving me this opportunity. I would also like to thank Robert Newton Jr , Poohlrob Ttn and Thailand Teach / Volunteer Inn - Thailand Teach. For over 13 months I was living at Thailand Teach and was directly or indirectly part of the volunteering work they do. It was a wonderful and humbling experience especially since it was in a very small village 155kms north of Bangkok. I have learned a lot from Robert, he would always tell volunteers and me that giving our time is much more powerful than shelling out money for charity (though money in the form of donations is also important and helps with improving infrastructural facilities and equipment). Hope to keep moving ahead and help to change society in a holistic manner." -Farzaan M

What does the future hold for Thailand Teach - any exciting new programs to share?

We will be offering others the opportunity in learning to build Thai mud huts, help out in local Temples and local hospitals.
