About Program

A unique experience living in France for an extended period, au pairing is a way to truly immerse yourself into French culture. How? By living and interacting with a local family and their community on a daily basis, with free time for yourself to explore the region, take a class, meet new friends, and more!

Your hosts will provide a stipend, private room, and meals. You'll provide support with childcare related activities for 25 hours each week. Most placements are in the Paris area, but sometimes we have hosts in the south of France as well.

We charge a program fee for the service of matching you with a host family, pre-departure support, and in-country support on an as-needed basis provided by our French partner agency. They also periodically run meet-ups for au pairs. Alumni opportunities such as language exchanges are also available.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with InterExchange for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

French Fairytale!

Becoming an au pair in France as a gap year in college was one of the best decisions I've made. I got incredibly lucky with a wonderful family that embraced me and introduced me to all things French. I learned so much from the language, to the cuisine, and much more. I was lucky enough to see so much of Europe as well during my stay and loved my first year so much that I went back for a second year with the same family a year later. But the best part by far was the people I met. I became friends with other au pairs from all over the world - from Canada to Italy - and cultivated bonds that are still strong today. And I will always treasure the golden moments with my family and the children I looked after. I truly believe that the best way to learn about a place is to live there fully immersed in the culture and way of life. There is no better way to do that then as an au pair. I will forever be grateful for what this experience gave me and pushed me toward. I am now an English teacher in the Dominican Republic with a passion for travel and new cultures that was ignited with my France stay. I would highly recommend taking advantage of this program to anyone who wants to see more of the world in a truly unique way!

What was your funniest moment?
There were so many unforgettable moments with my French family and the children I looked after, but two of my favorite moments were these. The first one was right after I had met the little boy I was going to be taking care of. I had taught him a new handshake and decided to take a video of us doing it. As soon as we finished our new handshake, he whipped around and mooned me! And I got it all on camera. The second time was when I was out to dinner with my French family. We had just finished eating and the waiter (a friend of the family's) came over to check on us. I wanted to tell him "Thank you very much" in French, but apparently I mispronounced a word and instead said, "Very nice butt." Everyone started laughing, the waiter got all red, and I was so embarrassed! It became an inside joke with the family from then on and I still smile when I remember that time.

Better than I ever would have imagined!

When I left for my year abroad in France at the end of August 2014, I had enough background with the language to believe that I would adapt easily to my life there with a French family and a new culture. It was intimidating, but I felt confident getting on my plane out of Cleveland. My first few weeks with my host family were challenging, but they were consistently helpful and understanding of any difficulties I experienced. I was invited to parties with extended family, and everyone else was extremely accommodating as well. It took me about 6 months until I got comfortable enough in large groups to be at ease with my speaking and comprehension abilities. By the time I went to my host dad's birthday party in May 2015, I was convinced that I would be able to communicate with anyone I crossed paths with there. I was right! I was able to hold my own whenever necessary, understand multiple conversations at once, and respond to anyone as naturally as I would in my own language, English. I felt like I belonged there as everyone was so accepting of my place there and so kind to me throughout the evening. Now, I had plenty of opportunities to take part in tourist activities throughout Paris during my stay there, but the highlight of my whole journey was this party. It felt great to know that I had improved in my communication far better and faster than I thought possible. This was certainly all due to my magnificent host family. I will forever be grateful to them for accepting me into their home like another family member and helping me advance in so many areas of my life during my time there. I will definitely go back to see them again soon! I never dreamed that I'd have a second family in France during my lifetime!!
