We work hard to keep costs down because we like being an option for students who need to pay their own way. We live simply ourselves, we don’t hire accountants, we drive older cars and use our personal vehicles. All these things help with costs. But this isn’t the main explanation for our cheap gap year programs.

We know that being thrifty has benefits on top of being kind to your wallet. Our programs help you learn new skills and see different ways of being in the world, sometimes even more so than when you’re dropping a ton of money.

Our programs are for those committed to building the foundation for living a magical life, a life that feels free, connected to others, and rich in community and purpose. Programs include time living in community in Colorado, adventures in Utah and Arizona, and a road trip to Oaxaca in southern Mexico, along with an array of crazy challenges and adventures chosen to transform your life.

It requires saying "yes and" to what life throws at you. At the High Desert Center we practice all this again and again in wilderness, in towns, in diverse cultures, and in the next place we choose to go together.

Good for Adventure travelers, Students, Solo Travelers

The gap year program is an intense, and for me life changing, adventure in the mountains of colorado. From the hours of dancing every night, to the fun physical labor like hauling mud to help fill in the walls of a mud house. My group grew to form deep relationships over many nights by the wood burning stove, and we’re still in touch 4 years later! Dev himself is a masterful teacher, easy going and fun but knows his stuff and how to stand his ground when needed. He built his entire home and you can feel the love emanating from every beam and the stories he tells of how he built it. This program is transformational, and it was a perfect transition between being a kid with my parents and living on my own.

What was your funniest moment?

Learning to swing dance. So much laughter and joy and connection.
