About Program

Study abroad this summer in Costa Rica with Blyth Academy International Summers!

The North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica offers among the best and most easily accessible diving sites in the country, an abundance of marine life, and vast expanses of tropical dry forests that often line the darker sandy beaches that lend Playas del Coco its name. Students will have the opportunity to hike inland trails, zip line above treetops, climb hanging bridges, relax in the mineral-rich hot springs, boat on the volcanic Lake Arenal, and swim along the idyllic coastline.

For those who want to get closer to nature and learn about its inner workings, this area is an ideal spot to get an up-close look at an array of animals, including many species of seabirds and monkeys, and the hundreds of sea turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs each year. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve provides the opportunity to learn about cloud forest ecology and the thousands of species connected to it.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with Blyth Academy for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

The Best Experience Ever!

Travelling to Costa Rica with Blyth Academy was one of the best months of my life. There was so many opportunities and fun things you could do every day. The best part is that you are able to complete a high-school certified course on the beaches of Costa Rica. This experience was like no other. The staff were excellent, they made sure we were doing well in the course while making sure we had the best time of our lives. I highly recommend this trip in particular because of the extra-curricular activities it offers. If you want to spend summer surfing, going to the beach every day, ziplining, white water rafting and much more, this trip is for you! The best part is that you made friendships from across Canada. I now have friends from cities across Canada!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travellers is to make the most out of the trip. To everything you can, try and experience new foods, activities and so on. Make new friends, meet new people and most especially have fun! But also remember you are technically in school, so make sure to stay on top of your work so you can do these fun activities.

Best summer school you will ever do!

This trip was 100% the best experience of my life! I took my grade 11 bio credit in Costa Rica with some of my now best friends. Can’t get any better! While having a lot of acedemic success I as well had some of the most amazing adventures such as surfing, snorkeling, banana boating, hiking and so much more! We would go to the beach and into the little beach town of playas del Coco every day, coco was our home by the end of the trip:)) But we also got to experience the cloud forest in monteverde and the aerenal volcano! The sunsets were beyond belief and everyone on the trip and all the locals were the most amazing people! I easily became completely comfortable and fell in love with Costa Rica! And the friendship I made through the trip will last a life time! I have already visited friends hundreds of kilometres away and it’s only been a few months! Thank you so much Blyth for the best month of my life I will never forget it! Pura vida!!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Get out of your comfort zone! Talk to people go do everything. You may be tired but staying up talking, eating and singing throwbacks in the middle of the night were some of my favourite memories! Don’t be afraid to go for it whatever it is but still stay on top of your school work so you get a good grade and don’t have to miss out on things! And ask questions if u need! Also go to java the little coffee shop it’s amazing! Have the best time of your life and live in the moment with the pura vida life style:))

Costa Rica 2019

I went on the Blyth Costa Rica August trip this past summer and it was the most amazing experience of my life! You spend 3.5 weeks living with a bunch of other kids your age from all over Canada which may sound intimidating, but is honestly an experience unlike anything else. You make lifelong friends within hours and every single person there is in the exact same situation as you are making it easy to go up and talk to anyone. Costa Rica is an absolutely stunning country with the most amazing beach sunsets I have ever seen. In the beach town where you spend the majority of your time, you stay in apartment-like villas which are just a 5 minute walk from the beach and some restaurants and coffee shops, and only a 15 minute walk into town. Since it is off season there are hardly any tourists which almost makes you feel as though the beach is private and gives you a better sense of the Costa Rican culture and more opportunities to build relationships with the locals. The small but lively town has so much to offer as well as the other two places you stay on the trip. I took grade 11 biology and instead of learning in a classroom we often would have class on the beach or by the pool which lead to a generally happier and willing to learn class environment allowing not everyone to only memorize the material but understand it. I was very skeptical when signing up for this trip as I was scared it would not be as much fun as I hoped it would be, however after only a few hours I learned that it was even more. Whether you go with a friend or by yourself, this trip will end up being the best month of your life so do it!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The biggest piece of advice I have for future travellers of any Blyth program is go into it with an open mind and a positive attitude. This trip can easily be the best month of your life just as it was mine, all you have to do is make it! From the second you get to the airport you should be completely judgement free, inclusive and open minded to anything. You will make friends faster and you will make it a better experience for yourself and everyone else I promise!

Costa Rica: BEST SUMMER!

Spending a month abroad with a group of complete strangers was on of the best decisions I ever made! Not only did I earn a high school credit, I met some of my best friends!! I continue to meet up with people I met on the trip (even though we love hundreds of kilometres away!) During the trip I had the opportunity to zip line, horse back ride, snorkel, banana boat and hike across different terrain in Costa Rica. I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in exploring a gorgeous country and meeting amazing people while earning a high school credit! Truly the best month of my life this far! One of the most amazing things about the trip was how I learned to be a more independent person and how many life experiences I learned beyond the classroom!
Thank you Blyth!!!!

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I would improve is the amount of teacher support we received. I found that some teachers were not as involved with students as others. This being said, my teacher was exceptional and lost of the staff on the trip were great!

Grade 10 Science in Costa Rica

What do you do during your summers? Do you like to travel? As a teenager with a strong passion for traveling, Blyth was a fantastic idea for me as I got to travel, meet new people as well as get an official credit which goes towards my high school diploma. During my summer, I got to explore Central America, try new foods and learn the grade 10 science curriculum. As a group, we did many exciting things such as visit a coffee plantation, zip lining through the mountains, swimming in the ocean, surfing, snorkelling and exploring the city, just to name a few. Overall, I had a fantastic time and I made memories with my friends and teachers that will last a life time. I would strongly recommend this program to anyone who loves to travel and try new things.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
There are many important pieces of advice that I could provide for future students but if I had to pick the most important it would be to have an open mind. This is important because during the program, you will meet new people, travel to new places and discover new cultures and you never know how they are going to be until you try them.

Best month ever!

I went to Costa Rica with Blyth August 2018 and it was definitely the best month of my life! The staff were so friendly and easy to talk to and I made so many lifelong friends. Playa del Coco, the beach town that you are in most of the trip is such a fun place to be and you really feel connected with the location. I would recommend doing the surfing excursion because you go to this gorgeous beach town and can go exploring and learn to surf. As for the school portion of the trip, I did grade 11 Biology and it was great. My teacher was super cool and she always went the extra mile to make sure I fully understood every concept before evaluations. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone! Remember to take tons of pictures and enjoy every moment you are there!
