About Program

Spanish culture is widely known for Flamenco music and dance, bullfights, fantastic beaches and lots of sunshine. But Spain has much more to offer than that. It is, and has been for thousands of years, one of the cultural centers of Europe. The art, architecture and history of the region have drawn the attention of the world for centuries. Learn or improve your Spanish language skills through formal instruction and, more importantly, practicing with native speakers in daily life. We'll also engage in a meaningful community service project to give back to our host community: work at a summer camp to help improve children's English language skills through arts & crafts, theater and other activities.

Community Service Hours: 20
Language Hours: 35

GLA Spain in Toledo

Our trip to Spain was an absolutely unforgettable adventure! Traveling with a group of friends, we delved into the vibrant culture of Barcelona, where we were amazed by the stunning architecture of the Sagrada Familia and explored the bustling markets and lively streets. Madrid’s historic sites, such as the Royal Palace and the Prado Museum, left us in awe. We enjoyed every aspect of the trip, from tasting delicious local dishes like tapas and churros to experiencing the excitement of a traditional flamenco show. Interactive museum tours, exploring beautiful parks, and participating in local festivals kept us engaged and entertained throughout. The trip was exceptionally well-organized, ensuring that every day was packed with exciting and enriching experiences. Each new adventure, from discovering hidden gems to enjoying spontaneous moments with friends, made this journey truly memorable. The blend of historical wonder, cultural immersion, and sheer fun made it a fantastic experience for all of us kids, and we returned home with stories and memories that will last a lifetime.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Probably it would be the tapas. They are small spanish dishes.
Pros
  • Very stress free
  • The people you have in your group
  • memories
Cons
  • jet lag
  • wake up somewhat early
  • school food wasn’t great.

Life Changing Experience

We researched so many programs and spoke to other parents about finding a program that was right for our teenage daughter. We are thrilled to have found GLA. From the moment we met with a GLA advisor, we felt at ease. They were always ready to answer questions and they were very organized with all the information that we needed. Sending your child across the world and traveling internationally is scary but trust in the process. It helps them mature and be independent. My daughter came home with an experience of a lifetime and we only wish we had sent her sooner. Highly recommend!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
As a parent, the part was having my child travel alone internationally. Don't worry, they will do great! My daughter figured everything out!
Pros
  • Experiencing a new part of the world.
  • Meeting new people from all over the US.
  • Making new friends in a new country.
Cons
  • Had to leave their new friends.

Without a doubt, WORTH IT.

GLA's Spain program was in its first year this year, and I'm so incredibly happy to have been a part of such an experience. I have no doubt that it will grow and evolve into an even more amazing program over the years.
Regarding community service, when I was in Spain, I wasn't thinking about the hours or what I was going to use them for at all. It felt like a dream, having fun with the kids and teaching them English. It was amazing to pass on knowledge on a language that I never had to learn. It opened my eyes to other cultures, and I really think that we opened their eyes to our culture. What we gave to the kids and taught them, they gave right back. I learned so much about Spanish culture and customs just from going to service every day.
If that's not enough of a reason to go on this trip, the social aspect was the best I've experienced on any summer trip. We were a small group of seven students (mostly 16-18, but there was one 14 year old and she still got on with us very well) and I think that's a big reason why we all felt like a family at the end.
We did a lot over the three weeks, but it never felt like our schedule was packed. We had siesta every day, so of course that helped, but looking back, we still got to do and see a lot. Our schedule was more packed when we went on our weekend trips to Barcelona and Granada, simply because we only had one full day in each city to see as much as we could. Our local director was amazing and found several concerts in Valencia that we went to on one night. She also found a dance festival, where we were able to see some traditional Valencian dance and (try to) take part in it ourselves. With such a small group we were able to shift plans based on what was going on, and if any conflict with our itinerary had shown up, it would've been easy to find something else to do in such an amazing city.
Valencia was also the perfect city to host a program like this, because it's not the touristy Barcelona, so we still got a taste of Spanish culture while staying in a relatively big city.
We were always kept safe no matter what, and our hostels (in Valencia, Barcelona and Granada) were more than sufficient.
I hate to be cheesy, but it really was a life-changing trip. On my flight home, the flight attendant said, "Anyone that needs to get off this flight for any reason should do so now," and I was holding myself back from staying in Spain for a little while longer. It was a trip that fueled my desire to travel, and as my parents keep saying, I caught the "Euro-bug."

What would you improve about this program?
It is a bit on the costly side, but everything considered and depending on your point of view, it's worth it.
